This is the first I've heard of "industrial mountaineering!" This women was a beast, a force of nature, only nature itself could take her life. Rest easy, princess of the mountain. 🌹

@miapdx503 this is a legit beautiful comment. Greetings from Sweden, I always smile when I see PDX! if you love Portland you will equally adore Copenhagen. Although I think Copenhagen was better back before they ruined Freetown Christiania, If you get a chance you should definitely checkout Copenhagen region.

I learned in school to look for lower ground and if possible even lie in a ditch and make yourself as small as possible. It's pretty common to experience a thunderstorm during a hike in the mountains, at least in the Alps the weather changes in an Instant. I always have a rain jacket and one of these metallic blankets so I don't get too cold waiting out the storm.

@notme2217 What kind of reaction is this? How is it hilarious? Her daughter could’ve been injured or killed. Sure it’s very odd, being struck in bed, I guess maybe darkly comical but not as it’s a real person, a child at that. If you’re so miserable do something about it rather than complaining about it & being rude online.

A granite peak is just about the worst place to be with lightning around, because the height, composition of the rock and the lack of vegetation or soil make it an excellent conductor. This has happened on granite peaks around the world, and unfortunately it's a lottery as to how injured the climbers end up. People are rarely struck directly, but being in contact with a granite slab when it's hit is like grabbing the middle of a live electrical wire... you need an insulator between you & the rock, which is why you should crouch rather than sitting or lying down. It's likely that the rubber soles of the men's shoes helped them avoid the worst injuries. In Ekaterina'e case, she was unlucky to be on the rope where the charge had nothing to ground itself on except herself... if you consider that we use electrical charges to restart people's hearts with a defibrillator, imagine how easily a powerful bolt of lightning can stop it beating. An absolute tragedy, thanks for sharing this story.... RIP Ekaterina. 🤍
@bosnbruce5837
@bosnbruce5837 Жыл бұрын
wow... bro... Almost everything you wrote there is wrong. Not only the granite is far, far, far from being an excellent conductor, but also the biggest conductor on that granite rock was water. BY FAR the biggest. On top of this - the conductivity of the place is completely irrelevant. - And what do you mean she had nothing to ground on except herself? The lightning hit the rock and the ground current's got to her. If she was perfectly un-grounded ie isolated, her body would hardly ever come in contact with lightning currents. You don't want to be grounded in any shape or form during the storm. This is not a household electrical network. There is no good grounding and bad grounding. This moving charge thingie aka electricity seems to be a huge source of mystery to you. Good new is you're not alone, but come on... Read more, talk less :) -- BBruce (yet another mediocre physicist) _Myth: Structures with metal, or metal on the body (jewelry, cell phones,Mp3 players, watches, etc), attract lightning. Fact: Height, pointy shape, and isolation are the dominant factors controlling where a lightning bolt will strike. The presence of metal makes absolutely no difference on where lightning strikes. Natural objects that are tall and isolated, but are made of little to no metal, like trees and mountains get struck by lightning many times a year. When lightning threatens, take proper protective action immediately by seeking a safe shelter and don’t waste time removing metal.

@@bosnbruce5837I think part of what they meant is that many granite mountains are considered especially dangerous at high elevation, in particular when in contact with the wet rock.

@@bosnbruce5837 I was endeavouring to explain the _risks_ in a way that was easier for non-technical people to understand... not the science. I didn't say (nor intend to imply) that granite itself was a good conductor, but that the confluence of factors on granite _peaks_ creates a conducive environment. But I'll accept that feedback... it certainly wasn't my clearest explanation & I'm usually more careful with my scientific commentary. Fair call. But I'm also a big believer in _providing_ feedback as well as taking it onboard, and I have to say that your communication skills leave a lot to be desired Bruce. Ironically you make an awful lot of assumptions & misinterpretations in your rush to tell me how wrong you think I am... most of us who actually have a science background are keen to _educate_ people when we think they have the wrong idea, because science is complex & nuanced. Snarky comments are a great way to turn people off from engaging in the most important parts of science - asking questions & learning. So allow me to put this in _your_ words but with the correct grammar and spelling, to help you understand. This "moving mouth thingie" (a.k.a. communication) seems to be a mystery to you Bruce, but the good news is that you're not alone... so perhaps take some of your own advice & re-read your comments before you hit 'send.' You'd be amazed at the positive results you'll see. 👍

@@medea27 So you said something wrong on the Internet and one of its police corrected you. And he wasn't a total gentleman about it. OMG ... Notice how I'm referring to myself as an Internet police which is sad thing to be and far worse than anything I called you? :) - I agree about the communication. Partly. Not because I think am a great communicator, but because 1) it's not an exact science 2) one is almost never completely right or wrong going about it 3) if I caused you a bit of uneasiness that's undesirable. But it should be somewhat mitigated if I dispelled any lightning misconceptions. I'm a police after all - I see something wrong, I have to correct it. 4) Snarky comments are a great way to inhibit a hostile response, true that, but not necessarily to turn people off from engaging. As evidenced here. - IMHO The very best communicators are those who are able to sidestep any hostility directed toward them and simply stay on-topic. Better yet, they praise the offender and agree with him as much as intellectually possible. If the offender is not a total barbarian this immediately gives them both moral and intellectual advantage and the half-barbarian will be regretting his unprofessionalism. *Master communicators are never reciprocal in unkindness*

Lightning is terrifying when it it is hitting within feet of you. I was driving in Idaho when a lightning storm passed directly overhead. It hit the telephone line on one side of my car then the power line on the other. These fell over! But, I could see the strikes approaching from the left, about 80' every 5 secs closer. There was an 18 wheeler truck in front of me. I just tailgated the heck out of that truck until the lightning had passed. I figured that this was my safest strategy, ie., follow a bigger target. Never been so scared in my life. Those lightning bolts beside you are unreal.

I had a very weird experience with lightning. I was pulling up to my house in a torrential down pour one day. My 2 children were in the backseat of my car. I pulled within 2 feet of the chain link fence with a double gate. I told my children to get out and run to our covered front porch. They did so. I crawled to the passenger door from my driver seat. I sat there for a few seconds, I remember putting my hand on the passenger door handle and something in my brain told me "No! Wait...wait.....wait... Just then a bolt of lightning hit the top rail of the chain link fence (where exactly it first made contact I could never say), but when it hit it did this fast zig-zag travel across the railings and ended when it hit my large cast iron bell which was installed 7 feet high and near to the front passenger side of the car. I'm not psychic, but I think the warning was in the air around me which only some primitive part of my brain picked up on, probably because of nearly imperceptible static surrounding me. My children were unharmed but scared, thank goodness we had a 12' deep porch.

Brains are like that ... When I saw flies flying in a certain way, my brain realised immediately there had to be a dead animal somewhere and before I could even think about it, i froze, stood as still as I could. The body was a dead rabbit and my brain tried to protect itself from the "cave lion" that had murdered it.

I tell my girls, always listen to your instincts. We're animals, and we pick up on things, but then we talk ourselves out of it. So many women say "I had a bas feeling about that guy" etc. They may be smelling his nervousness, or picking up on an unnatural look in his eye.

In Ottawa Canada we had a man the was struck by lightning, they saved him but he was put in a home because all he did was scream 24/7, it was horrible he was in same nursing home my step father was in, over the months and then years until his body finally gave up. He was a young man in his 30’s, his wife and two kids watched him getting hit with lightning.

While paddling in the Lower Canyons of the Rio Grande, I experienced lightning so close I could see the tiny bolts coming from larger bolts. After hearing thunder, we ducked down in our canoes to protect ourselves-as much as possible. It was frightening! Fortunately, we were unhurt. I also learned on this trip that river maps may not be accurate because of weather and the passing of time. At a takeout before a dangerous rapid, the bank no longer existed. I was with a very experienced paddler who I totally trusted. He kept us safe throughout the trip.

In my mountaineering experience, lightning is normally preceded by a hum and vibration in your metal gear. When I have experienced this in the past, we normally stash our gear, because it will attract lightning, and take cover at a safe distance. Perhaps, in this case, they did not experience this hum, or perhaps because of where they were situated on the mountain, they could not safely separate themselves from their gear.
