Here's a pretty awful additional fact about Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle's cancellation: The show WAS greenlit for 2 full seasons, but halfway through season 2 Nickelodeon abruptly cut it off. Then they gave the crew *6 weeks* to write the final *4 episodes* of season 2. According to the creators, they are usually given *12 weeks* to write *1 episode.* They were basically given a quarter of the time they needed for the finale, not even factoring in that they had to shorten everything up considerably to make up for all that time they lost with the latter half of season 2 being cut. Apparently the writers were basically pumping out scripts daily throughout those 6 weeks just to get the story in a decent shape. The fact that the finale came out as coherently as it did is a miracle.

Another thing I wanna mention about Rise is that the movie that came out a little while ago, had the fans hoping and begging for the crew behind the show to make more if the movie got popular enough. @rosey.quartz I personally disagree with CN not having groundbreaking shows, at least with shows being made post 2015. OK KO and Mao Mao were great shows with good action, witty humor, and a build up to potential arcs. But CN on the business side poorly mishandled those shows that most people would not heard of due to the little marketing they got. Craig of the Creek is there current cash cow as it is in the same league as Gumball and TTG in terms of having a proper air time rather than being pushed off to die from obscurity. Good for that show being popular because it's a genuinely good show that bring in elements from Ed Edd n Eddy and KND while still having it's own identity. Villainous has this pretty interesting concept of following villains defeating superheroes, and it's the first ever Hispanic CN original not from the US or Europe. Unfortunately, Warner Bros never thought of dubbing their own Hispanic show despite not having to buya right to air it opposed to anime and that Villainous is a popular show in Latin America. Tig n Seek was the most cleverly written cartoon in recent years, but HBO Max never marketed it and the Execs made season 1 extremely bland that newcomers would lose interest to see season 2 where the showrunner had a lot more freedom. Like at least find season 3 and 4 where their freedom was at 100% oppose to 2 with 75% freedom and 1 have 25% freedom There's other shows that could've been big, but Warner or CN Execs never supported them until it was too late. Really that's the actual problem, mismanagement. CN as a studio and from the creative teams can pump out brand new classics, but so many of them are being shafted left and right by the business side. A lot of shows could last longer if CN gives out a bit more promotion and better scheduling. I feel worried about future creators since Zaslav will add a lot of limitations within the animation studios.

The fact that the only recent praise comes from a game they didn’t make (Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl) speaks for itself. And even then, they basically rushed the devs making that game, causing the hype for it to die down and for them to lose potential fans. This isn’t the first time either, the Battle For Bikini Bottom remake was also rushed by Nick and had a ton of bugs and glitches that made it worse than the original. Also they started making NFT’s
@KyogresHideout_Vegito21212 жыл бұрын
I bought the Switch version of the BFBB remake and in the middle of playing it suddenly had an error that basically said the save was corrupted forcing me to start from scratch and at that point despite enjoying the game until then I basically just gave up, uninstalled the game, and then got the pc version instead and to this day it has stayed deleted from my Switch with only the icon on the home screen as a reminder.
@Murr2482 жыл бұрын
I want to better elaborate without making my original comment thread a paragraph. Nick All Star Brawl was not created by Nick. Nick had to approach Ludiosity: A small indie team notable for making a Smash Bros-like game known as Slap City. Whilst Ludosity was happy to work on the game, Nick basically rushed them by giving them only a year and half to make the game. The game started development in early 2020 and released late 2021. The game received a lot of praise at first, not just due to easy meme potiential, but because the game featured rollback (Which basically removes input delay) While Smash Ultimate was known for having mediocre online. Then the game launched… Better online is all All Star Brawl has going for it. The game released with no voice acting from it’s characters, the roster felt heavily incomplete, there was only one unique side mode, no alternate costumes for characters, and no items. The animations also look mindlessly rough and stiff. In spite of all the massive glaring flaws, the game is 50.00$ regularly. The game is nearly asking full priced when it’s incredibly mediocre. They would release voice acting later on, but by that time, people really didn’t care about the game. The game died in a week after launch, and it was mainly due to Nick rushing the devs and jacking up the price. Doesn’t help that now we have Multiversus, another Indie Smash Bros game that has everything Nick All Stars didn’t and it’s free. In other words, you may as well just get Multiversus. Or if you only have a Switch, Smash Ultimate. Because while Smash is 60$ you’re absolutely getting your money’s worth as both the game and it’s DLC passes are jack packed with content. My main takeaway from all this is that Nick was way to damn greedy. They didn’t care about a quality fighting game, they saw Smash Bros. Ultimate was popular amongst kids, and knew they would beg their parents for the game because Spongebob was on the boxart.
@tjh66782 жыл бұрын
To add to this, when Nick was involved in NASB's development, it was only for mind-numbingly stupid, restrictive mandates like characters not being aloud to have simple color swap alts or have original dialouge/basic interactions for the arcade mode that aren't just shoehorned quotes from the shows. These same mandates also became hypocritical (in addition to stupid & restrictive), because a while later, a mobile Nick tennis game for Apple Arcade dropped & had polished graphics, a ton of fancy new outfits for characters, plus voice acting/new lines for the roster. It's like they were deliberately trying to sabotage the damn game... I say this as someone who bought the game at full price when it first dropped. It especially sucks because at the time, I was anticipating the game in the months leading up to it, laughing at the memes that spawned & it even gave me something to look forward to after I lost my dad to Covid. A Smash-style Nickelodeon fighter is such a genuinely banger concept, so to see it drop with below bare-minimum content & lose any momentum it had with the mainstream is just sad.

After talking with Mighty B! creator Eirk Wiese, he told me that the reason why his show and many others were canceled was because while working on the first season, one of Nick’s offices had a major restructure and not only did the new execs laid off much of the show’s staff including EP’s who helped bring shows like SpongeBob and FOP to life, but they also cut its advertising. Which led to the second season having their last bunch of episodes being broadcast *one year after they were finished* and moved around to different time slots. In other words, The Mighty B! was canceled because of a cooperate restructure.

That bluntly honest jab at Mr. Enter’s Rise of the TMNT review hit close to home. I remember listening into that retrospective he was doing, which was mostly okay if I recall. But his take on Rise… no, he didn’t review Rise. He reviewed Teen Titans Go, skimmed the first episode Rise, and said it was crap simply because it wasn’t the 2012 TMNT show. Showing that he barely watched the first episode, and decided to be blatantly racist about April being Black.
@christopherbennett58582 жыл бұрын
The Nostalgia critic one didn’t help either. I do agree with him on the turtles being very similar to the Michael bay ones in design. However, the difference is that they actually put more thought into it.
@JayRedGear2 жыл бұрын
I hated when he said the people who made the show never heard of or hated the "original". So far, the only TMNT show he has looked at was the 2012 (one of the executives on Rise worked on the 2012 show) and everyone and their mother knows the Mirage Comics are the original TMNT. A lot of things Enter said was so bad and shows his clear lack of research (which wouldn't even take long and he'd look less stupid like calling Mickey's new weapon a Yo-Yo, somehow missing the fact that the turtles weapons besides Donnie's are mystical when it flat-out called them that in the first episode, April being black in one of the earlier comics, and comparing this show to Dino Posse which is absolutely disrespectful to the show and the people who created Rise).

@@JayRedGear eh, it’s like a certain other analyst puts it; the greatest threat to animation is insecurity. Hey, lovely video! The massive quality drop from circa 90s-2000's Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon was anything short of shocking. I'm not seeing many comments addressing Mr Meaty. Which I think should have been highlighted more because I still remember how terrifying that show was. But I get the sense that all the strong reactions to the show are due to being within a VERY specific age range when it first aired. The range i've narrowed it down to seems to be around ages 4-7 for peak traumatization. You get too much older than that, they consider it disturbing, but not terrifying. Too much younger, say someone born in 2004, they see it at an older age where again, not nearly as traumatizing. It's quite fascinating to be honest.

Something to say about Speed Racer Next Generation is that the redheaded bratty girl was voiced by a singer named Michal The Girl who was also the wife (now late-wife) of Dan Green (Yami/Yugi; you can also hear his voice at certain points in this show.) She was an amazing singer but sadly passed away after having twins. As a fan of her music and work in general, I often wonder if her family is doing well because she really did make me happy with this show. Funny thing is I think about her story from time to time while playing Pokémon because of who her husband was/is. I still listen to her song Flashlight (it might still be on YT; IDK) if I wanna feel nostalgic about where I am now as a person.

From what I remember from my animation director in college who worked on the second season, it was a mess because Vasquez fired most of the original team and hired on his own guys, who didnt know much of anything about how to make a cartoon, since their backgrounds were in comics. What they came up with was such a mess that most of it had to be scrapped and Vasquez got booted along with his team. The season 2 we got was significantly delayed and rushed because they were more or less starting over.

As someone who was a fan of Harvey Beaks, welcome to the Wayne, and a few of these other shows seen here. It’s always depressing getting reminded of how nick treated these shows. As someone who’s been casually watching nick cartoons from the late 90’s to this day, I grew up loathing the nicktoons network for this absolute reason. Almost to the point where watching a new animated series air on nick would have my automatic thoughts be of when nickelodeon will screw it over and put it on its infamous sister network. Till this very day I still get shocked that The loud house or it’s spin-off show Casagrandes somehow manage to avoid the nicktoons graveyard for as long as it did.(yes i know the latter was recently canceled but it’s currently has 5 episodes left and none them were planned to be on nicktoons as of the time I’m writing this). With all that being said, I’m glad that you made this video essay. Some of these shows may not be as inspiring as others, but the ones that went under the radar definitely deserves to at least be recognized and have it’s story on how it got screwed over told.

I feel like the best way you can describe Nickelodeon's mentality when it comes to cancelling shows even when it's going good or is hitting it's peak, is called "Spongebob Syndrome". It's when any show from the early 2000s to this year is expected to be as successful as Spongebob is in a short amount of time, whether or not Nickelodeon treated the show fairly with run times or production costs in favor of shoving more Spongebob into more timeslots. Which is why a lot of the shows you reviewed in the video or any show you would see on Nicktoons or Nickelodeon has a weird inconsistent wackiness and general immaturity to it, the underground success of Invader Zim with it's 2000s Rawr XD humor didnt help. The logic is that if the shows had the same wacky random humor as Spongebob did it would succeed, but it ignored why Spongebob and it's characters was so successful, especially the first seasons. Invader Zim and ROTTMNT are clear examples of wacky fun shows that broke away from the Spongebob Syndrome, while they were cancelled far too early they still had major successes with their own films and expansions on their worlds via comics and shorts. A privilege a lot of the better shows listed, such as Making Fiends, didnt have.
