You've got to think about how he said "Remember, don't open it, or you'll ruin the surprise." is actually an actual depiction of what death is like in real life. It's ALWAYS unexpected in ways people can't control. I'm pretty impressed! The fact that the Dame was basically trying to take control over the one thing that she could have in accordance to death being HOW she died was pretty well tied with the rest of the theme.
