Journalist Nigel Bathgate (Keith Barron) lets curiosity get the better of him when he decides to attend services at The Temple of the Sacred Flame. He sneaks in and witnesses the ceremony. One of the initiates, Cara Quayne, has been chosen to be the Chosen Vessel. As part of the ritual, Miss Quayne drinks from a goblet of wine, seemingly enters ecstasy and falls down dead. Chief Inspector Roderick Alleyn is called in to investigate...
Broadcast 8th June 1964 as part of the BBC's "Detective" series.

Another brilliant post. I knew of the series but had not seen an episode from it. It really was a case of 'he's in it..and he's in it...and he's in it...' with lots of my favourites such as Joss Ackland, Ronald Fraser, Keith Barron and especially The Master himself Roger Delgado. Such fun!

Inspector Alleyn is played by Geoffrey Keene. If he looks familiar it is because he flicked into and out of an endless number of Bond films as the Minister of Defence, i.e., M's boss. If Pringle (Ronald Lacy) looks familiar it may be because he played the Gestapo officer who burned his hand on the red-hot amulet in "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom".

TRIVIA:- NGAIO MARSH: DAME EDITH NGAIO MARSH: DBE : 23 April 1895 - 18 Feb 1982 was a New Zealand writer. Marsh was born in the city of Christchurch, New Zealand, where she also died. In the Introduction to The Collected Short Fiction of Ngaio Marsh, Douglas G. Greene writes: "Marsh explained to an interviewer... that in New Zealand European children often receive native names, and Ngaio... can mean either 'light on the water' or 'little tree bug' in the Māori language. Other sources say that it is the name of a native flowering tree." Her father neglected to register her birth until 1900 and there is some uncertainty about the date. She was the only child of Rose and bank clerk Henry Marsh, described by Marsh as "have-nots" Marsh died in Christchurch and was buried at the Church of the Holy Innocents, Mount Peel.

Different from the later series I assume it's the same as Inspector Alleyn mysteries with Patrick Malahide. Felt like an episode of Dr Who actually ;) I have seen the later series but not this one I am curious as always as these earlier versions always have the earlier career of the some of the best actors. A shame they never invited anyone from this version to star in the later one.

Alleyn in this production is an absurd, middle-aged duffer - nothing like Marsh’s ‘Handsome Alleyn’. And even he mispronounces his name: should be AL-len. Not All-ain.
