I can’t even think of ranking albums from 1991. It’s maybe THE year for me. 17 years old, and embracing everything I could find within the genre. Tape trading and friends making fanzines and selling underground albums. What a time to be alive. Joined my first DM-band in 1992, and are still playing 32 years later.

1991 was death metal’s peak year. So many banger albums came out in the genre. Most of these, at least the ones I’ve heard will end up in either A-tier or S-tier. Here’s my ranking of these albums that I’ve heard: S - Autopsy - Mental Funeral, Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten, Atheist - Unquestionable Presence, Immolation - Dawn of Possession, Massacre - From Beyond, Ripping Corpse - Dreaming with the Dead, Death - Human, Dismember - Like an Everflowing Stream A - Carcass - Necroticism-Descanting the Insalubrious, Morbid Angel - Blessed Are the Sick, Bolt Thrower - War Master, Cancer - Death Shall Rise, Sarcofago - The Laws of Scourge, Pestilence - Testimony of the Ancients, Malevolent Creation - The Ten Commandments, Entombed - Clandestine, Tiamat - The Astral Sleep, Convulse - World Without God, Unleashed - Where No Life Dwells, Grave - Into the Grave B - Gorguts - Considered Dead, Asphyx - The Rack, Darkthrone - Soulside Journey, Baphomet - Inheritors of the Dead, Edge of Sanity - Nothing But Death Remains, Mortification - Self-titled/Until the End, Therion - …Of Darkness, Cannibal Corpse - Butchered at Birth

Thank you for the memories and your massive work. From today's perspective your ranking is about right. Back in the day I'd say I felt it different. The fan's focus in 1991 was strong at Morbid Angel, Death and Carcass new releases. Just remember Headbangers Ball playing songs of these albums very often. David Vincent was the first and last Death Metal "rockstar", even some girls I knew were addicted to his charisma. All the other releases like Grave, Unleashed, Gorguts, Immolation or Gorefest were unfortunately not in the main focus of attention, as I remember. This was about to change the years to come. Dismember "everflowing stream"is the best of all those albums imho. Even by today's standards it's totally mercilless..It got much airplay in Headbangers ball, too. You cannot imagine the Massacre hype in 1991. It got album of the month in several German fanzines, as far as I remember. I instantly bought the CD, while my school mates were into Boys II Men and MC Hammer 😅.
