MORE Death Metal Rankings By Year: kzbin.info/aero/PLGt4fzX5jyue8mCsxJT9dKYnIvAFfteK0&si=NGIM2i0wW6kQ_V6D EDIT: To those commenting about the Malevolent Creation song They Breed and where I stand, I do not often read lyrics and was unaware when making these videos so please do not take my high ranking of the album as any sort of statement on anything beyond my enjoyment of the music itself. I can't say that knowing would have changed its inclusion OR ranking as these are not criteria I tend to consider, but if it NEEDS to be said: racism bad. The 90's WAS a time where that word was thrown around a lot more and I don't like judging the past based on present-day standards, but I will also say that based on interviews I have now seen with Phil this definitely goes a bit beyond that. Do with that what you will. Our morals and standards should always be our own.
@mindful28647 ай бұрын
Thank you for addressing that. I love Malevolent Creation, the Ten Commandments and Retribution are classics in death metal but I do not defend that song or Phil's views and I even put Eternal at B-tier. I know you probably faced a similar issue when ranking Nokturnal Mortum and having to rank Nechrist and trying to focus purely on the music.

You have to remember with this guy his perspective is from when after this scene came and gone he’s too young to have lived it. He’s basing his opinion upon what he goes back and listens to on KZbin. He clearly likes the euro sound more. And I do not agree with him on most of his opinions, which makes me wonder why do I watch his videos? Thralls of metal is way better for reviews.

That last question is a good one to keep pondering. But I also pose you this: do you want to live in a world where there is only one definitive majority opinion? Because that's a world with only Taylor Swift and no metal at all... Music is much more interesting when there is a broad variety of perspectives and opinions. There is no right or wrong when it comes to art.

@lamentate076 ай бұрын
Kind of. There was no official name for it then, and some albums that were later seen that way were not defined or even described that way then. The sands were shifting though, especially in Europe. American was behind at that point. Death metal was still the main focus of the underground then.
@Cwin-ny6bp6 ай бұрын
@@lamentate07 I don’t know that by 1995 no one was using the term melodic death metal, but regardless of whether the term was actually in use, it was in fact, the banner year for melodic death metal. It doesn’t really matter if the term was actually in use. Black metal and what is now regarded as melodic death metal was also already taking over by the mid-90s, and traditional death metal was somewhat on the decline in popularity in the underground, at that time.
@lamentate076 ай бұрын
@@Cwin-ny6bp I was there. I remember. It was becoming more popular, yes, but it was one of those slow waves that was building momentum. It wasn't like everybody dived in. Dark Tranquillity and In Flames, for example, sold nothing back in those days. Black metal was more of a European thing and so was melodic death. Americans were still gorging on death metal in 1995, even if interest was waning. So if you are talking about the underground, you need to refer to Europe. As for peak popularity, melodic death wasn't even close to that at that point. That happened years later.

Edit: just saw a 2007 interview with Phil when looking into it and yeah... that's pretty yikes, but also the whole "there are cool black people I know vs. "thugs" and "n$$$$s" WAS unfortunately not an uncommon sentiment when I was growing up.
