MORE Death Metal Rankings By Year: kzbin.info/aero/PLGt4fzX5jyue8mCsxJT9dKYnIvAFfteK0&si=NGIM2i0wW6kQ_V6D EDIT: To those commenting about the Malevolent Creation song They Breed and where I stand, I do not often read lyrics and was unaware when making these videos so please do not take my high ranking of the album as any sort of statement on anything beyond my enjoyment of the music itself. I can't say that knowing would have changed its inclusion OR ranking as these are not criteria I tend to consider, but if it NEEDS to be said: racism bad. The 90's WAS a time where that word was thrown around a lot more and I don't like judging the past based on present-day standards, but I will also say that based on interviews I have now seen with Phil this definitely goes a bit beyond that. Do with that what you will. Our morals and standards should always be our own.
@mindful2864
@mindful2864 7 ай бұрын
Thank you for addressing that. I love Malevolent Creation, the Ten Commandments and Retribution are classics in death metal but I do not defend that song or Phil's views and I even put Eternal at B-tier. I know you probably faced a similar issue when ranking Nokturnal Mortum and having to rank Nechrist and trying to focus purely on the music.

To me Death 'Symbolic' is the perfect death metal album. Is it my personal favorite album of all time in the genre? Maybe not quite, but still a perfect 10 out of 10 album for me; flawless production, catchy melodies, heaviness, superb songwriting, intelligent lyrics and musicianship on the highest level possible. One of the few albums where I wouldn't change one single note.. 🤗👌👌

You have to remember with this guy his perspective is from when after this scene came and gone he’s too young to have lived it. He’s basing his opinion upon what he goes back and listens to on KZbin. He clearly likes the euro sound more. And I do not agree with him on most of his opinions, which makes me wonder why do I watch his videos? Thralls of metal is way better for reviews.
@MetalTrenches
@MetalTrenches 7 ай бұрын
That last question is a good one to keep pondering. But I also pose you this: do you want to live in a world where there is only one definitive majority opinion? Because that's a world with only Taylor Swift and no metal at all... Music is much more interesting when there is a broad variety of perspectives and opinions. There is no right or wrong when it comes to art.

I think Deicide had to reach that 30 minute mark for the album because of contractual requirements with the label, otherwise they would've probably kept it as fast as it was. @@MetalTrenches I think you largely nailed this one too. The perfection tier is probably the same as mine. Even the ones where I might move them a bit I don’t feel like we’re far enough off or that I have strong enough feelings about them to complain. As an aside, I swear there was a misconception for a long time that The Jester Race also came out in 1995, which was never correct but I believe was repeatedly mentioned in reviews and publications and lists as they were talking about all the seminal melodeath albums that came out in that year.
@lamentate07

Kind of. There was no official name for it then, and some albums that were later seen that way were not defined or even described that way then. The sands were shifting though, especially in Europe. American was behind at that point. Death metal was still the main focus of the underground then.
@Cwin-ny6bp
@Cwin-ny6bp 6 ай бұрын
@@lamentate07 I don’t know that by 1995 no one was using the term melodic death metal, but regardless of whether the term was actually in use, it was in fact, the banner year for melodic death metal. It doesn’t really matter if the term was actually in use. Black metal and what is now regarded as melodic death metal was also already taking over by the mid-90s, and traditional death metal was somewhat on the decline in popularity in the underground, at that time.
@lamentate07
@lamentate07 6 ай бұрын
@@Cwin-ny6bp I was there. I remember. It was becoming more popular, yes, but it was one of those slow waves that was building momentum. It wasn't like everybody dived in. Dark Tranquillity and In Flames, for example, sold nothing back in those days. Black metal was more of a European thing and so was melodic death. Americans were still gorging on death metal in 1995, even if interest was waning. So if you are talking about the underground, you need to refer to Europe. As for peak popularity, melodic death wasn't even close to that at that point. That happened years later.

Esoptron is so much better than their debut. More advanced melodies, tighter song structures etc. Just fantastic arrangements. It's my favourite album of theirs. Communion is second. Hate is also Sinister's best. Brutal and groovy at the same time, which was less common in 1995 than it is now. As for DT, they raised the bar too high with The Gallery and never lived up to it. The Mind's Eye was a crushing disappointment in 97.

Kataklysm were better in their early days to me. More interesting and unique. They lost their identity and started releasing very similar sounding albums with plastic production.

You should put in flames jester race and opeth morningrise on the 1996 death metal ranking video for 1996 you should also put katationia brave murder day the death ranking video for 1996 and also you should review the new while she sleeps album or do a album ranking the new while she sleeps album is called self hell

Most of those will be. As for my review of While She Sleeps, frankly I thought it sucked hard. I hate all of the pop tropes in it. Mixing pop and metal can be fun and interesting, but imo they do it in the most bland and basic way possible.

Isn’t the malevolent creation album the one where they say the N word?

Yup. On the track 'They Breed'. Too bad that a silly lyric ruins an otherwise ultra brutal and brilliant album...

I was not aware. I do tend to argue the "different times" mentality though. I don't know enough about the context of that specific lyrics, but the N word was not NEARLY as much of a all-around no-no then that it is today. It was of course still not a good thing, but people threw it around a lot more. I don't like to judge past works based on present-day standards. Edit: just saw a 2007 interview with Phil when looking into it and yeah... that's pretty yikes, but also the whole "there are cool black people I know vs. "thugs" and "n$$$$s" WAS unfortunately not an uncommon sentiment when I was growing up.

@@MetalTrenchesnormally I don’t really care, I can’t understand the vocals anyways… but I absolutely hear what they say at the end of “They Breed” and it was baffling reading the actual lyrics.

Not a great year for death metal. The end of the golden age. Autopsy made a smart play by bowing out after this, and reemerging like a phoenix 15 years later, better than ever.
