It's hard enough to shoot a pistol out of someone's hand with a sniper rifle from a distance while it's pointed at the weilder's own head without severe injury or having the gun go off anyway, Watari shot the pistol out of the guy's hand _from a helicopter_

it was an incredibly risky move, the downward air from the propellers, the instability of the helicopter, the low light conditions, and the chances that the bullet could fragment on contact with the gun and shrapnel could cause serious damage to the suspect's face and head. Ballsy, but stupid.

The Shinigami eyes do actually work on photographs and video footage. The only thing they don't work on are sketches and other artistic depictions.
