#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.

Although I absolutely love this series, the only reason I don't watch every episode of it is that many of these games I've never heard of. Toon town online? Have many people heard of that? Maybe it's just me. It's very interesting and informative, I just wish I'd heard of more of the games you cover.

I betcha they didn't even see themselves like that back then. Brands only started to seem self-aware recently, which is a dangerous thing, 'cos now they joke about being evil corporate scum to dull our senses by making us think "oh, so they're capable of reflection, surely it means that they're not that bad, since now they also have empathy and can't ignore the consequences of their evil actions without feeling ashamed". Of course they can. Edit: sorry, didn't mean to lower the laughing meter of this thread, lol

@@Maggerama"...as Zizek provocatively pointed out, anticapitalism is widely disseminated in capitalism. Time after time, the villain in Hollywood films will turn out to be 'evil corporation'. Far from undermining capitalist realism, this gestural anti-capitalism actually reinforces it. Take Disney/Pixar's Wall-E ... What we have here is a vision of control and communication much as Jean Baudrillard understood it, in which subjugation no longer takes the form of a subordination to an extrinsic spectacle, but rather invites us to interact and participate. It seems the cinema audience itself is the object of this satire ..." Mark Fisher in Capitalist Realism, beginning of chapter 2. As someone who was "there" during the final years of Toontown Online and was one of the first alpha testers for TTR, I did want to mention something that not everyone was quite aware of once the game was shut down. Major updates to the game halted entirely by 2008, as mentioned before. But I do believe that the developers intended to go further had there not been the shift of focus to other titles. There's an unused tunnel residing in one of the playgrounds that was theorized to be apart of some future patch. Hints and words such as "Cog Nation" plastered over boxes and sewer grates found in the headquarters of Cogs. And of course, the simple idea that the game survived as long as it did, implying that they really did want to do something more with it. The primary reason it died was the shift, I can agree. But the shift had already started long before the game actually closed. What was happening in-game, a result of the shift, only further pushed this beloved game off the edge. With the lack of effort being put into generating new content, as well as running the game on its own, more and more bots, hackers, and trolls appeared and made the game even more unbearable. There were two entire servers that, at almost any hour of any day, were full beyond their capacity, causing huge lag spikes while in those servers. However, they were the most popular, with the most EXP boost events, currency gain events, and most players doing things. Getting into the overloaded server was as easy as teleporting to your friend who was in it. Hell, there was even a third-party bot network put in each of the playground areas where you could have a bot teleport you TO the server, or any other place in game. It was used by virtually everyone that knew about it, and up until the end, that teleporting bot and any others were still running around. I myself have never worked in game development and therefore, I'm not aware of how you can even begin to fights bots like the ones in the final years of Toontown. All I know is that they were hardly acknowledged by the development team. And they were hardly fixed or covered up, either. If you look up videos of Toontown Online in its final years and you look in the background of some of those videos, I can almost guarantee you'll see bots T-posing in a tower or colored in a certain shade that didn't exist in the normal toon creator. It wasn't a rare sight to catch them. But it didn't stop them from lagging out playgrounds and being an overall nuisance of a sight. Hackers would at times "break into" your house and interrupt whatever it was you were doing. It never happened to me, but I've heard stories about people who got banned by hackers. The community was also heavily splintered at that point... There were maybe three types of players in the game by the end of the run: the hardcore end-game content players, the people that just wanted to hang out in Toon Valley and attend fashion shows/roleplay/whatever there was left to do in this game, and the new people who would quit maybe two weeks later. There were external sites used to get parties together to run boss battles, because if you couldn't get into Nutty River, the most popular server in the game, then you were never gonna find a team just waiting around. Exploits to go "shopping" were discovered in one of the boss battles of the game that involved everyone alt-F4ing out if the reward they were going to get was deemed useless. And no, there was no punishment for doing this. You had trolls that would deliberately make wrong choices in the turn-based combat that would result in getting team members attacked and "killed" (effectively the same as booted from the boss fight and sent back to a safe area). I honestly feel bad for any new players that had jumped in at the end of the cycle. This game really is dear to me and always will be. And hearing that someone's first and last experience with Toontown began and ended with the hacker-pocalypse and shut down of the game? It's saddening. And I only hope that, as time passes and Toontown Rewritten progresses, we'll have back the game we all know and love in a much improved state. They developers of TTR have shown they love this game with the effort they put into the alpha stage alone. I will never forget attending the first Cog Invasion in TTR history. I will hold that experience with me and hold it tight. As I will with all my beloved memories of this game.

You hit the nail on the head!! I always made it a thing to get into River cuz that’s where everything was happening. The amount of hackers was insane and they were EVERYWHERE. I remember anxiously waiting for cog nation to come out and I had so many theories. when they shit the game down, I was so heartbroken. I lost my toon with 127 Laff and some awesome friends. I joined TTR last year and even though I love it, it’s not the same as the original. There are much less people and no one seems to want to do the side things anymore, like cart racing, etc.

Toontown was a massive part of my childhood, I love to see it covered. After getting my mom to buy me a sub, she tried it out and actually no-lifed it. She got all the way up to max Laff points within a few weeks and I still hovered midway between that. It had dungeons and raids. The raids had platformer puzzles that were fun and challenging. Learning the strats of what to CC (there were CC gags, debuff gags, damage gags and healing gags) and when to use certain gags added layers of depth. As I got older, I was able to progress further into harder raids. When I finally started progressing on the last raid, they announced the shutdown. It was such a pity. The quests gave you cool temporary cosmetic rewards, like being transparent, super small, a giant head, etc. I liked keeping up the transparent buff. RIP Loopy Rainbow Dandymuffin.

Hey, former mod of the biggest fansite for this game, Toontowncentral.com (now mmocentral). Site at one point was asked by Disney to be the official forum for the game, but admin staff turn it down. I think because they wanted to virtually take over the site. Played this game since 2005 up until its death. Friend of mine helped launched TTR, I was in the alpha stage testing it until I just didn't enjoy it anymore. You nailed a lot of the main issues, no updates, Disney focusing on other stuff. Big part you haven't mentioned were the trolls who would intentionally exploit glitches, plus people would refuse to work together (using a "lure" gag to not have cogs attack for several rounds unless attacked, negating your lure by using a "sound" gag that would attack all the cogs at once for very little damage.) The game was fun for a time, but lack of content killed it. Once you hit 100 health points you would start this process of collecting achievements in order to get the next 37. Many people didn't get much further than 110, with many of these achievements coming at the mercy of RNG. For example, there were huge posts compiling the percentages of where to find rare fish. Many people would take years to catch all the fish, basically causing their endgame to run on RNG. The game was very nice for the multitasker. It had a sort of mindless repetitiveness where the stakes were just high enough for you to feel good about your accomplishments. Unfortunately much of the game ended up as an endless grind, securing points in order to obtain access to a boss battle (until you were maxed). If I recall, it took 8 or so runs of 20-40 mins to collect all of these points. In boss bot hq it took maybe 2 hours to complete a single one of these runs. The adults in this game did so much great work, creating guides and walkthroughs. It was a pleasant community with a fixture of weirdos and this sort of innocence that you just dont find online anymore. Remember how it felt as a child to walk up to anyone and immediately be friends? That was the sort of thing that Toontown inspired. another note: there was an open chat where you didn't have to use the premade phrases. Called Secret Chat, where you would get a code from a friend and they could see what they were typing. Otherwise it looked like "woof woof ruff" - animal noises. Toward the end of its lifespan Disney experimented with an approved whitelist of words that you were allowed to type. As I mentioned earlier, there was a large group of hackers and exploiters of bugs. think of TT as the birthing grounds for all your favorite aim bot script kiddies who got a lot out of making people upset. It was a great game to foster interest in PC gaming for an entire generation. But I think it overstayed its welcome about five years too long.

Would love to see this game rise in popularity. Servers get a little quiet outside of the afternoon-evening hours. If you're even slightly considering loading back into the toon universe, give it a shot. The game hasn't lost a beat and all content is completely free!

Toontown Online shutting down in 2013 basically means that the cogs won and the toons lost. There are no toons left to log on to that part of Toontown letting to cogs take over the town.

There was a free to play toontown. I remember back when I used to play it before it shut down, you didn't have to pay the subscription but the game was very limited. You couldn't get most of the other car upgrades or race in the other cups besides the first cup in goofy speedway, you could only golf in one cup (which was the basic cup), and you couldn't get any of the more rare doodles (the pets) and you couldn't own more than one or two at most Though some of these feature restrictions could be bypassed. If you had a member host the game in golf or racing, you could play the other cups with them.

Damn I just found this video but as a 18 year old that grew up on this game, I really appreciate this video. It really pulled me back into the good old days and I’m so glad you redirected people to TTR. They have such a great community and have been great to me any time I want to hop back in. I haven’t in awhile but I think I know what I’m doing right after this haha.

Been hitting up all your death of series, and really loving it. Pretty crazy how many of this series I've actually played. I did think of one not covered that could be interesting, pretty sure it's one of the many MMO's I played that you actually haven't covered yet which is Anarchy Online could make for an interesting series I'd guess.

Toontown also had to compete with another Disney project, VMK, Virtual magic kingdom I believe, because there was an era where additional content came to a near grinding halt as they were trying to feed into another mmo. As I write this, there was a Pirates of the Caribbean mmo as well that screwed with the development of ToonTown.

I played this game for a good 4 years up until it shut down in 2014. However, I had a friend from a France who was friends with the French moderator on Toontown Rewritten a Goshi, so I had that connection and managed to get a key for closed beta :D played for maybe a year before getting tired of it again. After completing everything you’re left to just grind out boss fights to get level 50 suits which I lost interest in fairly quickly. I did get to meet Charlie (the kid from the Charlies Begs to Save Toontown video in 2013) and Kong (rest in peace :( was the best toontown youtuber) and some other big names in the community during this time which was really cool, miss these days. Quality video my friend, you’ve earned a sub! :D

As someone who's main game was Toontown from about 2008/2009 till end, this is one of the best videos I've seen on the subject! Though there's a lot of major points that went unmentioned, (How endgame is doing the vp/cfo/cj/ceo 77 times each, with resource grinds inbetween, dunno why you mentioned how minigames were repetetive instead of that) how unbalanced sound was - especially in a game where you could not pick sound and get fucked over as a result (which especially happened to younger kids), how bad field offices were (cluttered up the streets with barely any reward, while not being useful/task required like normal buildings), how you needed to get into nutty river server to do most endgame things; which was constantly full so you had to go around begging for a ride in. But I respect that this video was more focus around landmark things early in the game's life! This video wasn't annoying/wrong like a majority of the summary videos for this game after the fact, so thanks so much for introducing more people to a very important thing to me!

Club Penguin being acquired by Disney is also the reason that game died... Twice (rip Club Penguin Mobile) I live in Germany, never did I see any advertisements for this game, even though it was released over here. I never played the actual game, but Toontown Rewritten makes for a genuinely good time. I kinda really need a Lego Universe Episode now, because I actually played that game and still miss it today.
