I've personally seen 5.3 gas engines with over 600,000 hard miles. All original internals. Mine is getting close to 200,000 with the water pump being the only thing I've replaced. There's something majorly wrong with modern diesels when gas motors can easily outlast them

Bill, I wish you would have posted this a couple of months ago. My early 04 6.0 with 215k lost an injector and turned out fuel pump was only at 5lbs at idle, replaced it and the injector and back to run'n like a champ again, I worry about my original HPOP, but keep an eye on IPR and all still good.

I have a late 04 F350 that I added a blue spring mod and fuel pressure gauge to a long time ago, one day it just dropped from 73 PSI to around 40PSI and I replaced the fuel pump thinking that was the issue (165,000 miles). Fuel pressure did not change, then I checked the pressure regulator, the tiny o-ring that is on the little poppet was worn, replaced it and it went right back to 73PSI. This 30 cent part could have destroyed my motor had I not had a pressure gauge since it was not noticeable driving the truck. Just another thing to look out for.

Boy has this video shown up with unbelievable timing. My ’05 F350 CC LB 4x4 King Ranch with 159,000 miles was experiencing hot/hard start after sitting for 10-15 minutes. I’ve been using Archoil in the fuel and oil for several years. I took it to my local Ford dealer, and by some miracle, was able to get a tech to bring his computer out to the service drive and hook it up. After he did his thing, I asked him what his best guess was. He said “If this were my truck, I’d put a new fuel pump on it”. He had been under the truck and notified me that the fuel pump “looked like the original”. So, thats what I did. $800 later (cost of part and labor to install) I determined that while it was time to replace the fuel pump, it didn’t help the situation. While tinkering, I also put in the blue spring kit to boost the fuel pressure. While that was fairly ez, it didn’t seem to have helped either. Made an appointment for 8/2. Went camping for four days, pulling our 18k lb 5th wheel about 200 miles round trip. Hoping and praying the engine wouldn’t crater and leave us stranded. Watched other vids that explained the dummy plugs and standpipe o-ring issue would be the cause of my hot/hard start situation. Between the camping trip and the appointment today, I decided to go ahead and buy new standpipe and dummy plugs to ensure the parts were on site when needed. I had convinced myself that those o-rings were the issue. Got a call from the Ford mechanic a few hours ago. He stated that he couldn’t duplicate the problem. Well thats just great, I’m thinking. Picked up the truck and brought it home. We have another trip scheduled for the 18th of nearly 600 miles rt. I’m thinking that theres a good chance thing thing will leave us stranded on the side of the road. Sat down to watch this video, and I’m telling you, it was a Godsend. Explains whats going on, and for what it’s worth, I concur. BTW, the truck is running pretty good since I took it to the dealer. I guess the combination of the new fuel pump and the blue spring kit did some good after all. Thanks, Bill. I cannot WAIT to get my truck to you for a dose of your shops magic.

The easiest way I can think of would be for you to buy an aluminum secondary fuel filter cap with an 1/8" NPT fitting in the middle, you can find them from multiple retailers. The NPT fitting allows you to insert a pressure sensor and monitor fuel pressure that way.

I think that leaning out a gasoline motor causing it to scatter parts is completely different than this type of failure. Just for the fact that air fuel ratio is not as vital in a diesel. A gas burner needs to operate between 12:1 and 15:1 and relies heavily on precision metered air and fuel. In the case of a diesel, it can operate as rich as 15:1 or as lean as 60:1, and most diesels have no method for metering air. Power and engine speed in a diesel are regulated by varying the air fuel ratio through how much fuel is injected, unlike a gas burner that is regulated through adding air and fuel at a static ratio. Injector lubrication and cooling is the only reason this problem happens, not because the combustion process is starved for fuel.

I got rid of a 2 year old 30,000 mile Chevy Beretta from being pissed off with it. Repeated auto trans slippage and jerking, short lived brakes, coolant smell when running the heater and cold engine piston slap. It had replaced an 84 Cavalier which was a piece of shit as was the 81 Dodge Omni before it. Traded the Beretta for a new Corolla in 98 and have had rock solid reliability ever since. 1 Neon, 1 Caravan, 2 HHRs and 2 Equinoxes all trouble free too. Beretta was my 1st new car and it was a major let down for sure. Probably by now been recycled into a Samsung fridge or Kia...
@sneakysnakepie17 жыл бұрын
John Ferguson cold piston slap was to decrease wear old cold starts. Now if it had a tick when warm it was probably lifters. For coolant smell with the heat it was probably the heater core was leaking. The beretta wasn't a bad car if you did maintenance to it.

Brenda Smith the 7.3 DOES NOT have the same problematic HPOP as the early 6.0s. Just get a fuel pressure gauge and make sure it doesn't dip below 50psi. If it does, clean the in-tank screens. If still below 50psi on WOT, replace the fuel pump.

How about a '97 7.3 w/248K miles? It's been surging on startup, lately - is that a fuel issue? Does it have the fuel tank filters?
@PatrickBaptist7 жыл бұрын
Yes they do, I bought one off a guy and paid less than he paid the dealer not to get it running because the screen was cloged in the front tank and broke off in the rear, this also causes your fuel pump to take a dump on you, your pump is a mechanical one not electrical and it's a real pain to deal with, under the turbo behind the fuel bowl. The truck had something like 260k on it. Also check your EBP sensor tube if it's clogged that can cause it as well, or the sensor might be bad too. It's mounted there in front of the HPOP with a tube going out the bottom into the passenger side exhaust manifold.

It uses a mechanical fuel pump but the same applies and they are so much of a pain to deal with, they sit right under the turbo behind the fuel bowl on top of the engine.... All the old body style 7.3s I've owned I deleted to stock fuel pump and did frame mounted filters and pump. IF that is really the stock fuel pump on that truck he is just waiting for it to take a dump on him, they usually don't last longer than 250k at best.

What does the tip breaking off the injector have to do with the fuel pump? I know bill is alluding to proper preventative maintenance on the fuel system but did the fuel pump cause the blown cylinder or the broken injector? Seems obvious
@amiliogonzalez6711 Жыл бұрын
The injector failed because it got too hot from a lack of fuel flow which acts as a coolant as well for the injector & eventually caused it to overheat and completely fail at the tip causing a catastrophic cylinder failure.

One thing I've never understood about the ambulances is that they use diesels. They're using an engine in an emergency situation that needs time to warm up and can't be stomped on right away. Which obviously they have to do all the time.
@Krankie_V7 жыл бұрын
ambulances are incredibly heavy. the extra torque from a diesel engine is definitely desired to make sure that bitch moves when they need it to
@brianmccarthy82157 жыл бұрын
also the fact that ambulances idle for hours at a time to keep all of the equipment running. Gas engines suffer from carbon buildup, and are very inefficient at idle.

The new v10 gasser Ambulances are much quicker/much more reliable than the 6.0l diesel used up until 09 in the Van Chassis. .

In the mid to late 80's there were issues with gasoline fuel spurting from the filler necks in Gas E350's causing fires in Ambulances. This "changed" the culture in EMS to switch to Diesel Ambulances. Sounds stupid, but EMS has a lot of "tradition" it uses.

It's not possible to do a relative compression test with a cracked injector. Yes tech that replaced it should have looked further into this

Says the tip broke off of the injector and then says the man didnt need a new injector? He needed a new injector. He just so happened to also need a new piston.

for clarity, 2000 7.3 liter needs to clean the fuel tank, and replace the fuel pump on top the engine in front of the engine?
@dangitgrossman7 жыл бұрын
Mike Panocatapolis I just called Ford about my '01 and mine only has the one in the tank (verified by my vin). So I'm sure yours is the same. Btw, $515 😫
@HaydenIngram7 жыл бұрын
ive worked on all years 7.3's obs are in the valley. super duties under driver door. also no fuel pump on the front of your engine. there is a high pressure oil pump on the front of your engine. yes drop to tank or pull your bed whichever you want to do, you can do a delete of the screens in the tank or clean or replace with new filters.
@wraith5118020037 жыл бұрын
Well there is the fuel injection pump, and then there is the fuel pump in the tank. SO, i think he is talking about the one on the engine as well as the one in the tank.
@sethmoore65657 жыл бұрын
Mike Panocatapolis no there is not a fuel pump on top of a 7.3 produced from 1999-2003 there is one in top in the valley on a 7.3 produced from 1994.5-1997. You might be thinking of the HPOP.

Seth Moore. Seth I have a 2002 Excursion 7.3L. So what youre saying is that I dont have the same crappy fuel pump as this 05? Im not having a problem with it at all but I would like to know so I can have it changed over.

powerstroke can't be too good if it is broken in only 205,000 miles.

7.3s can make a million miles before this stuff... The newers ones will never be as reliable as the first PSDs

Hey Bill, thanks for the information, but do you mean replace low pressure pump and sending unit for 6.0? Seeing the high pressure pump during the explanation kinda threw me off. Also, what about the HFCM unit? Will the pump in that unit need to be addressed? Thanks
@bluecolarboy7 жыл бұрын
The HFCM IS the fuel pump in a 6.0, as well as holding the primary fuel filter, water separator, and a heater for cold weather. It's considered a high pressure pump because it runs at over 70psi (if I remember correctly), versus less than 10psi from the lift (low pressure) pumps on Cummins and Duramax engines. The 6.4 and 6.7 use a common rail injection system just like the Cummins and Duramax's, in that there is a low pressure pump on the frame (aka, lift pump) that feeds fuel to the high pressure pump (injection pump, i.e, a CP3), which generates the high pressures needed for the common rail system to function. The goofy thing about the 6.7 is that the "low pressure" pump also runs at about 75psi, so it's considered a "high pressure" pump.

Just to be clear is it the pump in the tank or the pump on the frame rail. I got 298k and this scared the shit outta me. Need to know asap
@f150tom7 жыл бұрын
SLSfan25 there is no pump in the tank...
@PatrickBaptist7 жыл бұрын
Frame rail mounted driver side electronic pump 98 and up 97 and older are mechanical pumps on top of the engine under turbo and behind fuel bowl, major pain to change.
