My best mate went to pay his respects at the funeral of George VI. He was 22 at the time and travelled to London from Dewsbury especially for the sombre occasion. I remember him telling me that he queued up all night in bitter cold to file past his coffin. My best mate sadly passed away just over 3 years ago aged 81. I looked after him in his own home. Sadly many years of heavy smoking hampered the quality of his last few years and eventually took him.

As many know, George VI never wanted to be King. He was painfully shy, stammered and was mistreated by a few members of the royal family. When George ascended to the throne, he was underestimated. With Hitler at the gates, George knew his people needed him. For more than a decade, George was the only force standing between Hitler and the total conquest of Europe. George put his own fears aside and saved not only Great Britain, but perhaps democracy itself. It's quite a legacy.

Beautifully said. He was much loved and proved to be a King indeed. It's often the ones who shy the public and don't even know how capable they are, who are the true ones. Btw, the still pic of a teary Elizabeth at the end is very moving. It shows her deep sadness, and she looks so much like a very young Charles.

George VI strikes me as a brave person who accepted a responsibility that he DID NOT WANT in order to preserve the greater good. God Bless him - his personal sacrifice, and the stress it caused him, literally cut his life short.

Stress certainly wasn't good for him but he smoked like a chimney. He had lung cancer and severe cardiovascular disease.

Well, yes, he did smoke like a chimney but back then the dangers of smoking weren't recognised as well as they are today - smoking was even sometimes recommended by doctors as a digestive aid or to settle nerves. Sadly it cost him his life. At heart he only ever wanted to be a country squire and family man - he used to call Elizabeth his pride and Margaret his joy, and really, that just summed his entire character up.

"During these last months the King walked with death as if death were a companion, an acquaintance whom he recognized and did not fear. In the end death came as a friend, and after a happy day of sunshine and sport, and after "good night" to those who loved him best, he fell asleep as every man or woman who strives to fear God and nothing else in the world may hope to do." Winston Churchill (whose wreath at the king's funeral contained the messager 'For Valour')

The image of the 3 women wearing their mourning clothes is still as moving now as it was then! King George would be so very proud of how his daughter took on the role as monarch! When my grandad, a former soldier, passed away earlier this year, we were following the hearse through his hometown when a young boy, no older than 13, saw the Union Jack flag draped over his coffin stopped in his tracks and saluted as his body drove past. Albert may have never wanted to be king but fate decreed otherwise & he did a great job! I think it would have happened anyway, as Edward VIII was too flaky & only seemed to care about himself & not the country he was supposed to serve. Plus I doubt he would have left any heirs, so the throne would have eventually been passed down to his niece, Elizabeth. I have a lot of respect for George VI--he faced his fears & insecurities & overcame them.

Unlike the people of Russia and of France, it is not the custom of the English to apply epithets or sobriquets to their sovereigns although some of the earlier Plantangenets are exceptions. If it were the custom then surely King George would be known as "the Great & Good" because that is what he truly was.

@ksol1460tv When I was little, people spoke of the "romantic" story of the Duke and Duchess of Winsor. But everything I have since learned about him is that he couldn't have done the Crown, the country and the Empire a bigger favor than abdicating his throne. He was a closet Nazi, he was manipulated by an adventuress, and was just a Bad King in general. He was also a weak, unpleasanr human being.

George V1 didn't want to be king! Alas, because his fun-loving older brother shirked his duty he was forced into it. History could have been so different.........!

@mkh4n When the Queen passes, Charles becomes King. William will not become King until Charles is gone. The succession is not a popularity contest. It is an enormous, complex job which the Queen has performed with great steadfastness and devotion for nearly sixty years. It is not about power; it is about responsibility and devotion. It is better for William and the country that he not succeed to the throne until he is much older.

@RichardElden That's not entirely true. She does have some power in the case of a constitutional crises. Her real power, however, lies in her approval rating which, like our president's, goes up and down. In a time when her rating is high, she can utilize her rather large 'bully pulpit' to sway public opinion, which in turn sways Parliament. So, although her power is indirect, it really isn't true that she has NO power

@RicharElden, simply because the very idea of monarchy seems to be weakening,if we look at the opinion of vast swathes of the commonwealth! The Queen mother was King George's wife, she was Queen Elizabeth's mother. I think you're mixing up things. And the Queen mother loved her family but not many other people. She was not so nice as we think. And regarding Charles: Her Majesty is content with her son becoming the next King. She's always been and that's the law and God's will, and thst's what's going to be if Charles lives to be King. And he will be a good King. He is highly educated and intelligent. When you talk to him, you can't fail to notice his eloquent way if expressing himself. He does not chitter chatter but always speaks profoundly about anything in a manner that less educated people don't understand. He is highly underestimated. He will be a very good King. Don't get blinded by William. THAT one is moody and has a short fuse and a terrible temper. He is not the brightest either but people don't want to see because he's Diana's son and looks like her. But in my opinion, he's nowhere near to be ready to be King. Too inexperienced and selfish, not ready at all.

Whilst I'm not a monarchist,(& I don't say that to be merely contentious),should the queen enjoy the longevity which her mother did,& given that Charles is in his 60s,it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that he will acsend the throne when he's in his 70's/80s,which as far as I'm aware no monarch has ever done. But,monarch he will become as the order of succession dictates.William will be mature enough then to assume his place on the throne, should monarchy survive!

@@racheldemain1940 ... If, when Charles becomes King he becomes incapacitated and unable to carry out his duties fully then William as next in line could be appointed as Regent and effectively would perform duties on his father's behalf. At the moment Charles and Camilla and the Cambridges have taken on extra royal duties as the Queen nears the end of her reign, though she will remain monarch until her death, no danger of her abdicating. As Charles and Camilla are both elderly, he could be waiting another 5 or so years before he becomes King, I imagine he'll rely on William and Katherine in the same way as the Queen currently does.

The movie The King's Speech presented a very clear path between my violin instructour and I. Since I am legally blind, he had to tell me just where each sf or other musical punctuation existed and I had to memorise all of it. I was the one struggling to sing, or speak. He came up with ways to get me out of the box and because of him, I am able to perform. I am finding my voice! Now, if Obama could be as bold and a real leader as George!!! Bengazi may not have been the sham it is!

@sunnymarky The law says that Charles will be king on the death of his mother, period. The only possible difficulty posed by Camilla would be if the Archbishop of Canterbury refused to crown him, but that is (a) highly unlikely, (b) pointless if any other bishop wants to crown him (e.g. the Bishop of Carlisle was the only prelate willing to crown the "heretic/illegitimate" Elizabeth I) and (c) useless because a coronation is not required by law to maintain the crown.

so how can Charles be King , He cannot marry a divorced woman, or is it ok to have a mistress? He should relinquish his Right as King and William should be King

sunnymarky The Chourch of England has relaxed the rules on divorce and remarriage since Edward VIII. The Queen would not have given consent without consulting with the Lord Chancellor and other legal scholars.

@TheSirRoberto It won't happen though. I'm not hugely into the Royal family but I agree with you, but I don't think it will happen.

@edj66, You speak good sense.I'm in a quandry as whilst I'm not a monarchist, per se,neither am I convinced by republicanism. As for William, well unless something apocalyptic happens,it's unlikely I'll live to see him become king! We shall see,I guess.
