Death Stranding - HDR ANALYSIS + Settings - HGiG vs DTM - PS5 - Test on LG CX 65"

Death Stranding is a 2019 action game developed by Kojima Productions. It is the first game from director Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions after their split from Konami in 2015. It was released by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4 in November 2019 and by 505 Games for Windows in July 2020 and now for PS5.

I have HDR set at 50 and brightness to 5 as a sweet spot as well. Playing in Sony 65' A8H OLED👍

I have the 55BX and I can definitely confirm your findings. Since the games hdr implementation is great hgig is the way to go. DTM only if max brightness is more imortant to you than anything else. I dont like that the mids are sometimes overbrightened and you lose contrast just like you said. Also I do use brightness at 4, but 5 is definitely also ok. Its a bit personal taste I guess, because I am ok with a bit black crush for the best contrast possible. The hdr brightness setting I turned below 50, but thats expected, since my BX only is able to reach like 600 nits. I actually found a reddit post where they measured the nit steps for the brightness and then I adjusted it for my TV. But I am not seeing a huge difference if I go over 50 either, it still looks great, but most likely some highlight details would be lost. Great game and great Video!

HI, I've a LG oled CX 55" and I have a question for you: the ICON on the left bottom and the text (also in the home of the game) has a little blinking. Do you have the same "issue"? Not sure what you are talking about...you mean the flickering from the symbols? Yes I have this also and the text is also flickering . I think that's the game and has nothing to do with our TV.

Hello Amok, great work on your channel! I watched one of your other video about Hgig (Spiderman MM), and you explain how to do the calibration on the console with DTM and Hgig off on the tv. My question is, does that work for Spiderman only or any of the other games you recommend us to use Hgig? I've read that we always must set Hgig on when calibrating hdr on the console... Hi. You just need to set to HGiG if you like to use it. Keep in mind that just a few games supporting the HDR calibration menu. Most of the games having ingame settings for HDR

Buy the spring or take your old controller spring, yes it will work. Videos on KZbin. Simple to take apart. I wouldn't send it back, you'll wait weeks for it to return n it will cost u more than a stupid spring.

I switch between hgig and DTM on a game to game basis. Some games are coded to over 4000 nits and beyond and dtm does a better job there. For example God of war looks better with dtm and final fantasy 7 Remake does look alot better with hgig.

Hey amok, Off topic aber gibt es einen Grund warum du Schärfe von 0 auf 10 erhöht hast. Ich bin selber noch sehr unschlüssig, weil ich keine definitve antwort zur Neutralschärfe finde. i dont see why not. technically u can do it on base ps4 if it allows hdr in the game. im positive my old ps4 had hdr option on it but not sure if it was ever used within ps4 games.

Im using an LG65CX too and after seeing this im trying out hgig for a day or 2. im not happy with the major dip in brightness tho. Video games should be bright, so as not to put too much strain on the eyes. The benefits of hgig doesnt seem that worth it when compared to brightness, especially on this game where the lod is incredible with dynamic tone mapping on and the lgcx does a great job utilizing dtm without losing too much specular detail but also the lgcx does a crappy job with lack of brightness in hgig, some scenes look so dark and some look good whereas using dtm all scenes look amazing and the difference is only barely noticable when looking at side by side screens. seems not worth it but will test for a couple days

Hey bro, responding to this comment late but still relevant: I have LG C2 (42", PC mode) and I agree, same issue, HGIG is just a tad too dark, it doesnt really feel like true HDR. And you know why? Because I have a 2 year old Philips OLED 805 besides it (equivavelent to CX but doesnt even have HGIG or other gaming features) and guess what - it does a much better job at HDR tone mapping than the C2. First of all, you dont even have to engage the DTM on Philips oled to get what seems to me equal or brighter specular highlights tham the LG C2. It just looks already good enough. And if you want there are four (4!) different presets of how intense do you want the DTM to be, and I dont notice such a big delay than he is on the CX. My point with this being, Im not here to shill and promote another brand, but can only share my experience, comparison, and frustration with LG oleds. Its just a fact that LG has a lot to improve in ways in how they do their tone mapping , and brightness options in PC and console mode, not to mention overly agressive APL burnin protections you are forced to disable in the service menu, other brands like my Philips are not as annoying and no service menu was needed... The only issue with Philips oleds, at least with my particular model, is black crush and overly dark default gamma. In terms of black adjustments, LG has the best settings out there, but Im really dissapointed with how it does the HDR highlights, compared to Philips, its just not as good. DTM off is too dark, HGIG is kinda meh, and DTM is also kinda.. eh?

Samsung q80t owner here(not for much longer) I use hgig. 45 brightness otherwise the clouds and sky take on a yellowing effect. Default everything else. Hope this helps other owners of this poxy TV

I have lg cx and ps5 dtm 90% time is better in games more vivid colors more punchy. But it depends from game to game. And as you said oleds now are not capable to render hgig bright enough end of story. In a few years when oleds will be biright enough nobody is going to consider problems with brightness. Moreover I can bet newer models are going to have only hgig tone maping.

Hi 👋 I have LG C9 with pro calibration and peak brighntess is 780nits. Dont you think 57 Hdr in game is to far? Look at clouds above moutains. Its starts to disappear. I think after calibration on PS5 acording hdtv video ( 1 click above barrley visable) The best wat to Play on Lg oled's is just leave at deafault. 5/50, hgig

Why do you complain about m.2 storage costs which is like 150-180$ for 1tb and heat sink but have 10 controllers lol.. that red one is like 75$ alone .. that’s half the cost of storage .. you only need 1 controller but storage is a bigger deal... lol just messing with you bro .. love the vids .. you notice any quality of button feeling better on the red or black controllers? Brightness pattern in game should be all the way down on oled. Isn't this the black level setting, you want it black. I have brightness all the way down and left the other highlight value at 50. I'm on calibrated cx with ps5 in hgig. Dark room with bias lighting.

There is a new school of thoguht being introduced to lg oled and hdr. I am testing and seeing interesting results. The point is to use DTM and calibrate in-game and in-ps5 settings with DTM ON. So that's around 4000 nits tonemapped. When a game has sliders, this means you should usually max it out with DTM on.

In that case I say stick to SDR and crank the brightness up.. cuz HDR is not supposed to be super bright across the board for everything. ITs mainly the highlights that should be bright.
