Renee Peck If you’re a critic, you should have a higher level of standard. If there are no standards and reviewers are no different than the rest of us schmucks except that they got it early, then why should ANYONE listen to what they say? What good is a review if what they’re saying is only applicable to them? It’s not. Because they’re paid to review they’re held to a higher standard, yet deflect to “well this is just my opinion, man” when people point out their flaws. It’s an excuse for them to avoid any criticisms against themselves, funny enough. It’s also a problem with big, faceless, websites. If you follow a KZbinr, you’ll be able to understand how their likes or dislikes are applicable to yours, because you’ve seen their views developed over dozens of games. But it’s hard to follow reviewers on big websites. You won’t be able to really know what they do/don’t like and how it contrasts to yours to make a proper purchasing decision. So on big websites, who’s reviewing it is irrelevant to most people because they don’t know where that person is coming from, yet they expect people to. Think of it like a friend’s recommendation versus a stranger’s. You’re more intimately aware of your friend’s interests, but a stranger’s input can be good if they have rules/standards because it means there’s consistency. I shouldn’t have to follow a reviewer to *really* understand their position, I should be able to tell from any one review. Because I shouldn’t be expected to know them first. It’s not a KZbinr’s job to review, their channel is whatever they make it. But it is a reviewer’s job to review because that’s what they’re literally paid to do.

I think you have to play it to understand. I don’t think it’s ‘overcelebrated’ at all. It has some great gameplay, getting away from BTs, MULES, getting through the terrain without damaging cargo, micro/macro manangement, even the satisfaction of getting thousands of likes after you set out extra time to help someone with a bridge/road! And then the action oriented segments are fun too. I’ve played (and beaten) all the games you’ve name including Astral Chain, Fire Emblem, RE2, Sekiro, and DMC5. And I can confidently say Death Stranding is a top 3 of the year for sure, and I’m saying that around 35 hours in my first playthrough. I actually think what’s sad is that people are judging a book by its cover, and letting their hatred of the games director get in the way of trying something that’s genuinely new out. I’d recommend this game to anyone who wants a game that’s surprising in its progression!

You said you've been worried about this for a long time, in reference to the cinematic wave currently washing over the games industry. Man, thank you so fucking much for speaking up about this! It feels so good to find somebody who has the same concerns that I do. That rant that you went in to about "Game... Game - play!... Game! How is the GAMEplay not the most important thing", and your point that this will be thought of as "GAME" of the year, man, you sound exactly like I do, haha. I've screamed those exact same things to myself over and over again, this past 8 years or so. It's truly perplexing. The issue, I think, is that you've got these people who, for the past 10 years, have played nothing but games with little-to-no gameplay, and so they've literally forgotten what a "game" is.... and I stress the word "literally". They think that the story is the game, and that the gameplay is unimportant. It's really an incredible thing to watch, and it's such a twisted mess that it's hard to see how to even begin cleaning it up.

Maybe there are other things about the game that is great, and they liked it, so why get outraged over the "fun" part? As someone who actually played the game, ive had so much fun with it *including* the gameplay. People are blowing the whole "delivery simulator" thing out of proportion. This game is an experience that is so unique and different that it has the ability to actually make you feel excitement, fear, etc. The game is not boring in anyway tbh idk why the reviewers said that, i mean im pretty sure it was just a poorly worded way of them trying to explain that its not "fun" as in "goofy/lighthearted" it is dark and serious most of the time but it is also fun and exciting and it pushes the medium of videogames forward and I think it could easily deserve game of the year. Basically everything that was said in this rant was ignorant because it was spoken by someone who hasnt played the game and misinterpreted reviewers intent. At the end of the day though its subjective whether you like the game or not, but to say that it is "less of a game" because of its gameplay style is simply false. The best i could compare it to would be someone ranting that a the horror gane genre are lesser games simply because you just "walk around in a house" most of the time. The gameplay serves to compliment the other aspects of the game in a way that feels incredibly immersive and exciting.

This game DOES have gameplay in it and it still focuses on it, but the problem is that the gameplay just looks like dog shit and somehow it's still gonna get GOTY nominations. I think where you lose me with your argument is what you said about GoW and Until Dawn. I get your point, you value action oriented games more than other things, and I get it, obviously I would sooner replay Metal Gear Rising than Beyond Two Souls, but I think you're looking at it the wrong way. Death Stranding really appeals to me because, one of the things that I really like is slow, methodical gameplay, preparation and, yes, hauling shit, I have 200 hours into Elite Dangerous and I still haven't touched combat, I just really like the logistics aspects of it. I can 100% understand literally everyone saying that's boring and shit, because it is, I just really like it lmao. When you say that games like this shouldn't get high scores, well, for me it should get a high score, because what I was looking for in this game, which I mentioned in the previous paragraph, is REALLY WELL DONE, the admittedly BORING PLANNING AND WALKING is WELL MADE, and I like it. I think the issue here is that a number will NEVER convey the quality of a game, because it truly depends on what the game wants to do, and how well it is executed. However, it is beyond me how the reviews say it isn't fun and give it a high score. They should at least mention how it appeals to weirdos like me (and it does). I'm not defending the reviews, they are poorly worded and make no sense, as usual.
