DEATH | The BIGGEST PROBLEM in Dragon Ball

Do a reboot and learn from their mistakes to stick by their established rules. No matter what set of Dragon Balls are used, if a person dies twice they are permanently dead besides a one time/one day visit if they have accumulated enough merits to earn such a reward like Goku did in the Buu Saga as an angel (that's not to say they will come back to life or others lives can be exchanged to bring them back). So Krillin stays dead after the Frieza Saga, Goku stays dead after the Cell Saga, and Vegeta stays dead after the Buu Saga. Power Levels are never a thing, at least numerically anyways. Every race like the Namekian's and Human's should stay relevant to some degree whether it's through transformation like Orange for Piccolo or techniques like Ultra Instinct for Tien that isn't necessarily exclusive for them, but just makes it to where they have an easier time acquiring it than any other race (The Androids could possibly get upgrades from Bulma through studying and researching the Z-Warriors and their opponents to keep them relative or make the Androids into Cyborgs instead as a way to keep their potential while being enhanced, a superhuman of sorts). All Saiyans and Hybrids are born with Saiyan tails (Goten, Trunks, Bulla, and Pan should have Saiyan Tails and Saiyan tails should regrow until adulthood has been reached). Hybrid's should consistently have more potential than Saiyan's, so Goku is capped at Mastered Super Saiyan after the Cell Saga (He can still grow stronger in Super Saiyan, but won't be able to achieve Super Saiyan 2 or higher like Gohan, Goten, Pan, Vegeta, Bulla or Trunks). Super Saiyan must be achieved through large amounts of rage (Goten and Trunks won't have Super Saiyan off rip just like Pan and Bulla didn't). Super Saiyan 2 can only be achieved by those with enough potential and the right trigger, but is more taxing than Super Saiyan to give credence on why it isn't used as much during fights (Vegeta will be capped at Super Saiyan 2 after the Buu Saga because he has more talent than Goku). Super Saiyan 3 can only be achieved by those with enough potential and the right trigger just like Super Saiyan 2, and is also taxing like Super Saiyan 2, but just worse to give even more credence on why it isn't used as much during fights (The combined potential of Goten and Trunks via their fusion into Gotenks is how they discover this new level of power, but Goten is the first or possibly the only one to reach this transformation without the assistance of fusion). Gohan, Trunks, and Goten should be the main characters after Vegeta's sacrifice in destroying Buu (He should kill Buu to make his send off meaningful as fans like myself have been wanting for years). New threats like in the GT series should come first before the events of Super rolls around, aside from Broly and Frieza (with Frieza being wished back earlier in the series to make his level of power believable when he does face off against the new generation of Z-Warriors and Broly's power being believable as well since he could probably be a training partner/the right hand man of Frieza as his father is grooming him to hate Trunks since Vegeta and King Vegeta are dead). Super Saiyan God and maybe Super Saiyan 4 should be the last forms of the Saiyan's excluding mutations like Legendary Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan Rose (Or maybe Gohan, Goten, and Trunks have their own version of their final transformation where they go their own path to acquire enough strength to defend the Earth like Goten goes for Super Saiyan God due to his whimsical and curious nature, Trunks for Super Saiyan 4 to honor his father and the his fallen race, and Gohan goes for something like Mystic Saiyan as a way to live by his human side).

I do have more ideas like a simple power system to help flesh out power scaling and to keep it contained in established rules, as well as an idea for advanced ki, but haven't really explored it to it's fullest extent. For instance: human characters can remain one of the weaker races, even with Ultra Instinct, but utilize techniques like the Destructo Disk that can cut through any opponent no matter how strong thanks to Krillin having mastered his Ki control. Of course, such powerful techniques should also have an equal downside like he can only throw it one direction and becomes vulnerable when making the Destructo Disk because it requires too much attention less he just wastes a ton of his Ki. As for Advanced Ki, I only came up with one (not really something I came up with but went into more depth with it) being Demonic Ki than can only be utilized by those with an aptitude for it. This Ki grants it's user control over the mystic arts of magic (or what I refer to as manipulating the sciences of the rules of the universe as opposed to God Ki which embraces and controls the rules of the universe).

I would love for a reboot and I think they should take a few notes from One Piece on storytelling and give us some brand new stories because let's face it Z has been retold to us like a million times at this point with the games and other material.

Fantastic video!!! Nullifying the stakes takes all of the real tension out of these conflicts in 'Dragon Ball' nowadays because we know death is cheap. Hell, it's so cheap that it's literally part of the "Kai" theme song!! Anyhow, even though we all know this subconsciously (and find it annoying), it's still good to point out. I think that, as much as i hate the start of the buu saga, the fight on the world of the Kais with kid buu was an amazing moment for me. Not only did goku and vegeta face a threat to the earth, it was much more than that. The power of majin buu and his ability to tear holes in the fabric of reality itself gave a sense of true fear. The dragon balls Couldnt do anything in that situation, and vegeta's amazing speech and his final stand against buu against his own saiyan pride made the feeling that gave a climactic end for dbz and that is why i love the buu saga

I think another problem is that all the heroes know that heaven exists. Most have gone there at this point. Even if they couldn't be revived, you know they're not only ok, but they could even talk to you like Goku does with King Kai. The only way I can think of how to fix this part of it is to say that only the living can create new life. A parent not wanting to die because they want to raise their kid. If a global threat, then the story can be if the world is destroyed, no new lives could be made.

The King Piccolo saga was NOT the first time they used dragon balls to revive someone... That was Bora in the Red Ribbon arc, another moment that was treated as a tonal shift even if it wasn't a main character.

I personally think that DBS should make a modern and better writtwn version of the Shadow Dragons Arc with it being set slightly after End Of Z. It would end with the same results, those being that the Dragon Balls and Goku were gone, and the remaining fighters would have to protect Earth on their own!

After reading the original Dragonball, the spike in power from Piccalo to Raditz was insane. Also, Chaotzu's death vaguely foreshadowing Krillin's death on Namekn and Goku's transformation hit much harder than when I watched DBZ without the original's context.

In my opinion it was the spike in power from Raditz to Vegeta and Nappa that was insane, cause you see Vegeta destroying planets and just doing some crazy ass shit before arriving to earth. Not to mention when power levels mattered he was basically twice as strong as Goku, and 10x as strong as Raditz. IMO this was one of the first signs of power creep, where Vegeta at his weakest was able to vaporize a planet with a simple beam.

The other thing about Z is that for all its escalation it's even the portion of the overall story that introduces us to just how much of a joke the concept of death really is, with the way that the whole afterlife is set up as well as the Kaio and Kaioshin characters. Communication between both worlds, Goku just training for 7 years when he chooses to stay, North Kaio being dead making no difference at all other than him gaining a halo (and for no reason at all he declined being revived by Shen Long), Old Kaio giving up his life for Goku and then popping back up right the next second with a halo... Toriyama pretty much made sure of death lacking any impact at all even beyond the Dragon Balls.

Growing up I never paid much attention to it, but watching DBZA as a teenager really drove it home for me on just how death is a minor inconvenience to the world around the protagonists. Especially after Goku has seemingly perished after defeating Freeza.

i feel like Jojos handles death the best in anime. hte being a Jojo fanatic ,but i refused to watch it for the longest time and honestly it impressed me more and more with how they handle death and high steaks danger for the main cast. never did i once think that any main cast character could be safe or come back from a death.

Isn't the revival of characters present since the beginning of the series until now? Is it just a narrative method at this stage? Frankly, I think that the value of the balls will decrease if reviving characters has become non-existent. Especially since the balls cannot do any harm to the bad guys. If there is something I want, it is to add some attacks that kill a soul or erase it in order to avoid the problem or something like shadow dragons in gt

I agree with lot of what you said here. Taking revival away will decrease the value of the dragon balls, but I think the story around the actual death of a character can be written much better. P.S. I like the idea of erasing a soul, haven't seen anything like that yet

I know ya'll think death means nothing in dragon ball, but it's meaningful for characters arcs and how it affects certain characters (16's death affecting gohan, trunks' timeline, saiyan arc ending in tragedy, eradication of namekians and krillin's death etc) Death being used as a catalyst for key character moments and ending with characters being revived makes the journey satisfying.

I think the solution to this problem is by making beerus found out about the wish of revival and make him threaten shinron to not guarantee it to anyone, since beerus is god of destruction it will be meaningless for him if you can just cheat dead like that

I think they can fix it by having an arc where the dragon balls are disabled. Just have them not work. Maybe someone kills all the guardians? Either way kill a few main characters PERMANENTLY i know we love them but maybe perchance its old man roshis time to go. It kind of defeats the point but maybe even when the balls are restored you could bring them back just to get that feeling of a hopeless death again

The only way to make enything dangerous and keep stakes high is by making a villian stronger than wish, zeno beacuse if they exist and no one is stronger than them then Z fighters dont have to do the work to save the universe... It will be eventualy saved or handled by stronger beings than our Z fighters.
