One of the biggest crimes in death metal history, and probably music production history, was burying the bass on Human. I wish they could have gotten Pierre Rémillard to produce because his production on None So Vile and Obscura were amazing.

the bass was great but I think the lines got a little too crazy at times. It never seemed that buried to me either because I could mostly hear it fine , just not all of the bass fills

Just imagine being in his position :/, all that creative effort put forth just to be drowned, he had every right and reason to be pissed. Steve has alone inspired me to pick up the bass. well if you dont own an active bass you can make yours sound like an active one,kinda.. you gotta turn all the way up the tone knob on your guitar, and the TREBLE and GAIN on your amp,not 100% way up,only at about 80 the BASS on your amp has to be at middle or lower if you wanna get that 'active' sound

Okay, so obviously Human is my favorite album of Death's along with ITP (duh) because I'm a SDG fanboy. His work literally shaped my life. Human is a shame because its hard to hear the bass, but I LITERALLY CANNOT remember hearing ALMOST any of these notes except for maybe about eight of the higher dual note chords he plays. It's almost war crime level injustice that (even despite the bad mixing) you can at least KIND of hear the bass on the other songs...All except for this one. And it turns out its the greatest bassline he's ever played.

Maybe why it got remastered? His bass was WAYY too loud on ITP which came right after, maybe his complaints didn’t go unheard....I mean on the original mix, it’s harder to hear the guitars...listen to Flattening of Emotions, off Human, just drums and bass...digorio even admitted his intonation was off, and his bass lines deviated from the riffs so much you HAD to turn the bass down. I’ve been a bass player 21 years and there’s a delicate balance between being an innovative bass player, and simply making every riff a solo in effect. I love Steve, he’s a great bass player, but my point is he’s playing on a fretless bass. I didn’t hear his intonation start sounding “perfect” until 1999 with Control Denied. The mix on that one album is solid, but these older mixes with triggered drums and a more muddy guitar tone, making he bass any louder than he remastered version of human would just be too much. I agree you can’t hear the bass, except for a few high notes that really feel out of place to me. One more thing, listen to his intonation on Autopsy’s first album, Severed Survival. It sounds very sludgy and near off key. Part of that is the C# tuning but it is still noticeable beyond that. In my humble opinion, he should have laid back a bit more with the bass on Human, and I’m speaking from the point of view of a fan and admirer. When I heard the bass and drum tracks, I realized why his bass was so quiet. He rarely plays something that closely resembles the guitar riffs. Almost sounds like a different song in many respects. Just my two cents.
