@BumDandy-jb1ml Really? The qualities I mentioned seemed readily apparent to me. Maybe because I was a HS teacher for many years and have a degree in psychology. A surprising number of folks are functionally illiterate. And they have the most elaborate ways of hiding it from people. Enterprising American business Denny's restaurants cornered the market by having a photo of every dish listed on their menus.

"Heard it thru the grapevine" is in reference to how way back in the day (*before we got spoiled by our technology these days, lol*) there used to be operators that would direct peoples calls rather than just dialing a number yourself. . . You would pick up your phone and automatically be on the line with an operator, and one operator could have multiple phonelines/ people/households etc that they were overseeing. It resembled a grape vine with all the wires from here to there and crossed back this way etc etc. Well, say you call to talk to someone and tell them some good ole gossip just for somebody else to be eavesdropping on your call and all the juicy deets. Lmao. So, thus they heard it thru the grapevine.
@dernvader6876Ай бұрын
No. Actually the saying came from the fact that It was an actual grapevine you could hear and talk through; After the grapes are harvested, the vines retain their large swollen state for awhile, which is perfect then for sound to go through because the grapes normally absorb the sound molecules, so people at one end of the grapevine could then talk to another person on the whole other side of the vineyard, its pretty amazing, I've tried it myself and it really works, the sound is a bit muffled tho. Really. 100% true story. They tried to make long distance communications for everyone out of grapevines hundreds of years ago during the 30 years war, but the enemy kept cutting the vines, so it was abandoned. Imagine we could all have grapes in our communities and talk through them, this information has been suppressed by the big tele companies, like Att, Bell & Mint mobile.

Thieves in law are similar to shot callers in USA, highest criminal rank in Russia. This video is old and that time criminal traditions were more alive then now. You had black prisons ruled by thieves and criminal authorities (blatnyje) and red prisons led by prison administration with help of trustees. And now more and more prisons are red. But anyways Russia had deep criminal world traditions, very romanticized and very far going into everyday russian life. Very interesting topic, keep it up!

The depression in this place is on an entirely different level 😅 you should check out the book called a hangman’s diary it’s basically a private diary written by a an executioner hundreds of years ago it goes in to great detail of the execution methods used at that time. Also the book crime and punish is very interesting if your into medieval torture methods and how we got where we are today with modern prison systems
@The_Prince_Of_Crows7 ай бұрын
That sounds interesting but being that most people were illiterate and especially someone like an executioner you have to wonder was this specifically written to deter crime with horror stories. By putting the details out into public people had something to fear and a good reason to stay away from trouble. I could be wrong but it seems odd for the time. I guess it depends on the exact date.

"Heard it through the grapevine" originally was a civil war(1861-65) saying that referred to the telegraph wires and poles that looked like a grapevine. Rumors were often spread through the telegraph back then. Credence Clearwater Revival (CCR) recorded the song that everyone knows in 1970 but Gladys Knight and the Pips originally recorded it in 1966. Marvin Gaye also covered it in 1968.

Yes, that was called the BRAZEN BULL. It was created for a Roman Emperor by a skilled sculptor. He presented it to the Emperor, and he wanted to see how it worked so he ordered his men to seize the sculptor and put him in it. The Emperor was pleased and did not allow the whole process to be completed. So they pulled the sculptor out and then threw him off of a mountain top.

Death learned about the brazen bull, definitely a treacherous device, but if the stories are to be believed the first and possibly only person who was subjected to it was the creator of it. Apparently the ruler he showed it to was so appalled that he ordered the man be executed by his own creation right then and there. Just gotta watch to see what was actually used back then and what people just speculated about, like the iron maiden was never used as a torture device, if I remember correctly it was created by 2 guys for a museum exhibit and the legend of it veing used for torture was born, even though it would make a horrible torture device if trying to get information from the person since it would probably just kill them outright.
