I respect how professional Dr. Greene was in this situation, he didn’t get mad, he didn’t shout, he was just like “accidents happen, he’ll be fine, moving on”

Take it from someone who worked in the ER: you see a lot and can eventually get to the point where nothing really bothers/surprises you. I often joked that a patient running up and down the halls buck naked and doing the "booga booga" dance would get little more than a raised eyebrow from me.

@@sonrouge Isn't the head wound a bigger concern? Tv and film have a really bad habit of minimizing getting "knocked-out" but I had the impression that ANY time you get hit hard enough to lose consciousness there is a moderate to major concussion and issues lasting a few day to longer (It's like throwing your phone against a wall hard enough to jar the electronics to the point where it cannot say on ... do you think your phone is in good shape?). And prolonged unconsciousness is a bigger warning sign, unless they anesthetized so Deb could do more procedures .. but that is bad because they cannot monitor how long is is unconscious because of the injury (there are also BIG ethical issues with lack of consent). The rail he hit his head on is narrow and close to the floor which means he hit it with near the maximum speed of someone falling unconscious and the small size will increase the impact forces (Dr. Green didn't see this of course because he doesn't have eyes in the back of his head but Deb and the Nurse likely saw).
@sonrouge
@sonrouge 3 жыл бұрын
@@maggiemakgill Not really, as the patient they were working on was already emergent (things are very bad when you have to use the AED). Plus, as shown, he got seen to by the nurses (believe it nor not, nurses often do more work in the ER than the docs). Also, while a hit on the head like that is serious, how serious would depend on what signs and symptoms are shown. Considering the nurse's reaction when she checked his pupils, he wasn't showing any sign of traumatic brain injury (ie, mismatched pupils, lack of reaction to light) and there's no sign later that he bled from the ears.

Well he is IN the E.R. a lot so it stand to reason he'll get injured the most there. And if you're around doctors they will want to check any injury and the ones right there will be doing it. Contrast a construction worker who would have an easier time skipping the doctor's visit and might end up and different hospitals do to working on different sites around the city.

200 as in 200 joules. those defibrillators can generate 800-1000 volts AC and that's more than enough to kill you. interesting how a device designed to save your life can (in the wrong hands) do the exact opposite
@maggiemakgill
@maggiemakgill 3 жыл бұрын
@@derekwall200 You need the RESISTANCE and TIME to go from energy to volts (actually the equations are in terms of power, energy per unit time, so the LENGTH shock matters too). There are three equivalent equations: P=IV, P=V^2/R, or P=RI^2 (because V=IR) so V=(E/t)/I, V=sqrt(RE/t), or V=sqrt(E/(tR) ). Also it's not voltage that kills, it is current and total energy, your body the take can take VERY high voltages at low currents for brief periods of time easily. The voltage in a static discourage from walking across a carpeted room is a MINIMUM of around 3000 V if you can feel it, but the MAXIMUM energy delivered is around 250 millijoules and the current is VERY low. WRT The design of the defibrillators. It's designed to "reset" a heart that is beating incorrectly (a heart fibrillating/in fibrillation hence the name "defibrillators") but on a healthy correctly beating heart it would cause it to maybe "skip a beat" and then "reset" ... back into normal rhythm. They are also typically DC device NOT AC. They are so sure that shocking a normal heart isn't a big concern that and the importance of shocking incorrectly beating hearts back into normal rhythm that they have put AED devices in enhanced first aid kits in shopping malls and the like to be used by layman/relative laymen. www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/danger-from-unneeded-defibrillation What is energy? Energy is that ability to do WORK. Change something. What is voltage/electric potential difference? (ASIDE: EPD is a dumb name because is it NOT a potential and is NOT always calculated using difference methods, so I have no issue with the term "voltage" however one should never use "amperage" because "current" is a perfectly reasonable term so we don't need to blend unit and quantity name there.) Voltage/EPD is Energy per unit charge. Essentially how much energy each electron is carrying around the circuit. What is current? The amount of charge that is flowing, Charge per unit time passing a point. Note that CURRENT is defined crossing a point and voltage across a path.

Writers write the stuff actors act. Carter was comic relief at beginning. Mark Greene was Mr. Take it in stride. They both reflect Michael Crichton's personal experience when he was at Harvard Med and Mass Gen'l in Boston. Mark and Carter are the north and south of ER. Glad show is making comeback. Tony Edwards was the actor's actor although everybody rose to such highs...George and Juliana and Dunst and Chastain et Al. Miss Crichton's genius.

imo it was the most human hospital drama ever, showing the lives of every single person working in hospitals, even the really human patients and their 9-11 lives, their jobs and stories. The ones who came after were either soap opera-ish (Grey's) or had these special snowflake main characters with their 'superpower' abilities and crazy stories (House, Good Doctor). Not sure if the tiktok gen would be even able to watch a show like E.R. nowadays.

Especially that, "Meh, he should be okay." 😂 Oh the correct phrase is "barely phased" not "barley faised". Faised is not a word and barley is a type of grain. 😅

The patient is a "body packer" - i.e. he's smuggling drugs by hiding them literally inside his body. This patient was filling condoms with drugs and then swallowing them. One of them burst inside him and that's what's causing the problems in this scene.
