I don't agree that the holocaust was to blame. The satmar rebbe was very extreme even before the holocaust. The holocaust maybe left more people vulnerable and the satmar rebbe took advantage of that. He also took advantage of the victimhood status to gain political power.

I don't understand... Deborah was very curious during her growing up, but at the same time she practically did not discover her own sexuality until her marriage, not even from a physiological point of view, until when she was 17 - which seems inconceivable to a curious young woman who likes to read, is thoughtful and ask questions about everything. At the same time, we must not forget that the whole transformation at this young age, ie from a child through puberty to adulthood, revolves around sexuality. Strange...

At first I thought that, too. But you have to remember that she grew up in a completely secluded world with absolutely no information on why and how things happened with her body. And anything that revolved around sexuality was probably so out of line that she wouldn't even dare to think about it. She'd feel guilty about the stupidest smallest things. That's what I took away from reading her book, anyway. Probably just not comprehensible for us.

@@tina.InTheSkyWithDiamonds Some people don't understand the lack of newspapers, TV and the insane brainwashing of children from young age. We assume she should've known or read about sexuality when she had not much access to any books to read or people who could explain it to them. Even if she had such books an adult needs to explain it to a kid, that's why there are schools and not just libraries.

Deborah is very eloquent, but the conversation is very one sided. a true debate would bring someone from the other side to answer to all the points

There is a great deal of misinformation being expressed here, especially by the woman in the blue dress. Her statement about Christian women is completely false.

So basically right wing ideology is the cause of the oppression against women and oppression in general that exists within Orthodox judaism?? This woman is a shining example of the never ending cycle of victimhood that has become the Jewish existence... As if religious oppression doesn't exist in all the major religions of the world... but of course right wing ideology must be the cause of that also... Seems to me that this assertion is about as lazy of of an outcome possible for a so called academic that has such immersion and lived experience... Nevermind the 10s of thousands that happily acquiesce to their fundamental beliefs... Their truths simply don't count for anything because of your own so called enlightenment.... smh...

@@אדםגולוב She felt oppressed by the men in the community, and by the strict rules imposed upon women in the community, especially by her husband. This is the 21st century, not the 17th. She wanted more from life other than being a baby making machine, and a housewife. Sorry you're oblivious to that.
