grew up in Hasidic Williamsburg, in a very conservative family. From when she was young, she had that star celebrity quality to her. But as a woman, her ability to fully express her talents was significantly limited by the religious laws on Kol Isha, which prohibits women from performing to male audiences. Still, Riki's life has been full of joys, good humor, and great moments to shine. In this long-form interview, I talk to Riki about her amazing life story. And as a wonderful bonus, we even hear her sing some songs!

Another grand slam outta the park episode! Our expert guide Frieda leads us on a female Chasidic musical/performing journey with the wonderful multi-talented Riki Rose. Addressing the issue of “kol isha-women’s voices,” girls learning musical instruments, singing at the Shabes tish (table) and education we find interesting insights. Riki’s life story gives us a glance into her life and Community. Especially enjoy her live vocal performances with guitar. This woman has chops and deserves much wider exposure. Shkoyakh!

@@qwaleteeI'm wondering what time period also because I'm born and raised in Newark and I don't recall it ever having any type of Jewish population, I recall it being mostly Italian... 🤔 Now it is mostly black and Hispanic so idk when the Jewish transition occurred but it has to be only in the last 10 years or less. I never saw a real Jewish person a day in my life until I moved to NY and that was only 14 years ago.

I'd want to note you left the Hasidic community, but still care deeply about it. Like every other community, it has advantages and disadvantages, universally enriching cultural practices and potentially damaging ones. You want to share what makes it unique and highlight its many beautiful characteristics and traditions, while still exploring the objectively correct, understandable reasons you left. See? Alright - the weekly Saturday evening smoke alarm test is done and I have a large glass of wine next to me and some time to myself. Time to watch the latest video from Frieda. 🙂 49:20 - I thought we were gonna see water coming out of her nose for a sec... 🙂 I've experience the light-headedness thing back in my teens when I sang. I think it's a mild hyperventilation. I loved it. I think it means your breath control has become so efficient that you are slightly more oxygenated than you really need to be. Yes, it's a good thing, I think. 1:18:54 - Remarkable. I think of exactly this event when I think of the whole thing around hearing a woman sing as a male. I'll leave it there. Very much enjoying this interview. 1:21:37 - This. Good question. Good answer. I really enjoyed this interview. Best to Riki Rose.

Riki mentioned Miriam the prophetess’s singing and dancing after the Jews crossed over the Yam Suf (The Red Sea) when leaving Egypt. I just wanted to point out that Miriam and the other women first separated themselves from the men and then they began to sing and dance. We learn that women can and should express themselves to the fullest extent. However a woman, like a diamond, is too precious to be flaunted or tossed for all to see. She is held in the highest regard, and most respected. It is for this precise reason, that she is modest and does not allow just any man to witness her preciousness. Her preciousness is for herself and for the man that she trusts will respect her and value her for her actual worth. The man that will cherish her like a diamond, keep her safe, and take care of her and her needs.

It bears to mention that Riki’s father is the exception, not the rule. TBH my father confiscated things too, mostly to punish me, but Riki’s father takes things to a whole new level. Sadly he’s mentally unwell. In no way does he represent chassidic men/fathers.

Yes true, I related to Riki’s father confiscating things but my father was never ever Riki’s father- he’s clearly a piece of work on a whole other level.

A beautiful interview. One difference is that Riki seems to have the support of her sisters and her mother. Many of the religious who leave the fold, don’t seem to have the backing of a family. Most of all Riki is respectful of the traditions she was brought up with.
