DEBATE @ S.C. - JAY SMITH vs MUHAMMAD HIJAB

Unfortunately, this will be the final debate from a ladder at Speaker's Corner for Jay Smith, and for everyone, as ladders, boxes, or any stands have now been forbidden for use at that venue.
This particular debate between Jay Smith, and a Muslim named Muhammad Hijab was decided 'at the spur of the moment'.
The subject was exactly how did Islam and Christianity begin, using historical criticism for ones criteria. It was obvious from the very beginning that Muhammad wanted to speak more about the Trinity and the early church fathers than about any historical criticism.
It was also obvious that he doesn't have a very long attention span, for almost immediately he began to swing his arms, and even at one point spent his time trying to copy Jay's hand movements, mocking and mimicking him with various facial expressions, which were not very uplifting and quite immature.
Nonetheless, Jay kept the debate to topic, until his last summation, when both he and Muhammad were asked to get off their ladders, a new law which came into force during this debate, though it has been on the books from 1997
What does this mean for Speaker's Corner? We really don't know, because without speakers on ladders, it then becomes just another discussion corner, which one can find anywhere, and with anyone.

When romans and arabs clashed, it was because Muhammad sent men to raid roman territory, including sending his former adopted son to certain death while doing so. The romans never went or thought about going in Medina or Mecca, and the life of Muhammad from the time he went to Medina until his death was involved in wars and bloodshed, and he never said in that time he was only defending himself, but his thought was that he was fighting for Allah and to defeat unbelievers and subdue them. Muslims today says that he was defending himself, but reading the Hadiths it is clear he was attacking.

I'm really looking forward to watching this debate between these two. I have followed Dr Jay Smith's work closely for years. His knowledge of Quranic scripture and Islam's early history is incredible. Extremely comprehensive, well researched and completely validated in the correct academic manner historical research should be conducted. You can't just rely on the Quran and Hadith or singular sources when it comes to validating historic events and facts. I would like to mention that Bart erhman commentary is a result of his own opinion and not the result of scholarship. By this I mean that the historically, the Gospels are written by Mathew Mark Luke and John. His point about them being anonymous comes from them not saying within the texts that they were written by them. Because it wasn't a common practice to do so in those times, it can not be certain that they weren't written by the names they are credited to. At the end of Bart Erhman s misquoting Jesus book, he gives the disclaimer.

9 mins 30 seconds in, Dr Jay Smith responds with his five minutes after Muhammad's introduction to Islam in which he states Islam has always existed and all the Prophets were Muslims and even Adam the first man was a Muslim. Dr Jay Smith instantly dismantles that notion by using historical evidence he's researched and what any scholar or academic of theology and Islam will instantly know to be true. Islam as an ideological belief system has a beginning point in history, and surprisingly it does not start with Muhammad the Prophet of the 7th century. We know it began two centuries later. So Islamic ideology, the Quranic scripture and Hadith, can legitimately be considered *a later revival or revisionism* of *an earlier* Islamic faith-ideology. That then, raises some validity and credibility questions. According to Islamic scholars, the Quranic scripture verses are the word of God and are eternal. However they weren't written down by Muhammad or any of his followers during his lifetime. They were recited orally and passed on from one generation to the next. Here's the problem with that, you have the "Chinese Whispers" effect whereby what was said by the first person often isn't what ends up being said by the last person. It gets changed slightly over time as it's passed from one person to another until eventually you end up with something quite different to the original. And because there is no original source to refer back to you have no way of knowing whether the 8th-9th century Quranic scripture is even close to the verses Muhammad spoke in the 7th century. And then you have the Hadith's, a contemporary commentary of the scripture verses and how to apply an ideology which began from a much earlier time, two centuries or more prior - and that (the Hadith's commentary) is why Islam has inherent problems and conflicts within the ideology-faith movement leading to division. With two major factions disagreeing (Shia v Sunni) but also many other Islamist factions including radical and extremist ideological interpretations. That inevitably leads to conflict within Islam. Which started not long after the Prophet Muhammad died and has continued 1,400 years to the present day around the world. Muslim's have been fighting and killing each other over these ideological disagreements because there is no consensus due to a lack of singular source or original text since nothing was written down by Muhammad or his followers (or it was, and somehow it got lost or disappeared). Hence, what we have today is *a revisionist Quranic text* but we have not just one - several (four widely used Quran's today, different). Until the latter 19th century or early 20th century, there were 37 or more variations of the Quran in existence being used. Which raises the fundamental key question, how can it be a divine eternal scripture directly from God, as Muslims claim it to be? Why is there no original 7th century Quranic scripture? The Jews had scribes document their holy scripture (the Torah) and the Christian's did their Old and New Testaments codecs. Why didn't Muhammad and the first Muslims scribe Quran verses as they were revealed to Muhammad or not too long after his death? The obvious answer is Muhammad was almost certainly illiterate and another explanation is likely he wanted to be the sole source and authority over the scripture verses and word of Allah. Cult-like ideology founders and leaders generally do that because it gives them absolute power and control over an ideology-movement, and also the convenience and flexibility to change or make up new rules to suit themselves, their situation or the times they lived in. And if you read the biography of Muhammad and how we comes across as an individual and behaved, that explanation fits as the more likely explanation rather than illiteracy or inability to scribe verses. We know that Muhammad kept and traded in slaves - including Jewish slaves, who were almost certainly fluent in Arabic and could scribe so there's no real practical reason why the original verses of the Quran weren't formerly transcribed by Muhammad or his followers. Remember the historic time context here. Muhammad appears and Islam originated 600 years after Christianity and thousands of years after Judaism. We have early Christian bible books at the time of Islam and books of the Torah, but no Quran scripture. Dr Jay Smith also points out the other surprising fact that very little is known about Muhammad the Prophet and Messenger of Allah (outside of the 8th-9th century work and 10th century final complete Quran). We don't actually know who he was as a person or much about him in any accurate original historical context. We have to rely on the writings of his two biographers as the only source. And their writing was done over two centuries after Muhammad's death so is anecdotal at best - and some might say hearsay - given the absence of any written first-hand eye-witness accounts in the Quran or Hadith's from Muhammad's era. Unlike the Gospels of Christ in the New Testament, which are written by the disciples of Christ who lived and preached with Christ during his lifetime and ministry. Historians (and people wanting to find truth) look to MULTIPLE sources of evidence to establish reliability and credibility when it comes to establishing who someone is, what they did/said, and what is truth or fabrication/distortions or pure fiction. The more different and close historical written sources we have which validate and support each other, the better when it comes to history. And that's exactly what we have in the New Testament Gospels (and even writings of the early Church fathers outside of the Gospels, and even historical writing by Jews and the Romans) which all support what we know about Christ, his birth origin, life-time events and his crucifixion - which Muslims deny happened - despite the overwhelming historic evidence proving it did happen which hardly any historians dispute today. When you have a new ideology religion denying the crucifixion of Christ one of the most important and significant historical events, that's a big red flag and casts serious doubt over Islam's truth and Muhammad's credibility as a Prophet. However Islam has an explanation for this major historical discrepancy - and that's a whole other topic that needs investigating historically to see if it passes the smell test.
