Katz's was one of my first visits in NYC when I moved there in the late '70s -- all I could afford was a hot dog -- and that was a scary nabe then and this was at night. My boyfriend was shaking as he walked us over there.. I liked Yonah Shimmel's for knishes and bagels. Delis are quite different here in Europe, that I have seen. I miss a NY pickle! I loved my deli in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn later and if I was ill they'd absolutely send me some groceries, I could request stuff by phone, and I'd just pay cash upon delivery. The place was nothing too special but some of the stuff was fantastic, and you learned what to buy. I had my first Cel-Ray in Katz"s. Word. The charcuterie business in France is complex and they need hundreds of thousands of experienced workers. It's a bit frustrating in Paris not to be able to get great NYC deli. They do such great mustard and bread here, too! But forget about their pickles. Katz's rocks!
