You needed some Jewish deli mustard on the sandwich, and some pickles, and coleslaw on the side. I have not been in Katz's in 30 years. But back then you got complimentary (free) pickles put on your table. No way have I have eaten pastrami without mustard.
@danielueblacker91187 ай бұрын
personal taste... I was there last 10 years ago. I need a fork and knife for the pastrami sandwich a pickle for me is nice years ago in Woodmere, LI i went to a grocery store with a thirty gallon wooden barrel with pickles.... old school.... last I seen a video somewhere Katz has great hot dogs when I go back to NYC love to add that to my list.. my taste is hot dog and mustard on a bun nothing else.

As Second Avenue Deli is actually kosher, not just kosher style, I am reminded of an old joke. A group of Jews goes to a Jewish delicatessen and the waiter, a Chinese, takes their order in fluent Yiddish. Later, the owner is making his rounds and comes to this table. He asked them how was their meal. They all proclaim, "Wonderful but just one thing; how did you get a Chinese waiter who speaks fluent Yiddish?"' "Shh", exclaims the owner, trying to silence them. "He thinks we are teaching him English!"

I've now seen several of your steak videos and a few of your sandwich ones, especially as it comes to pastrami and you've become a favorite for me UA. You make very relatable videos, you have a good easy and likeable presence and you do an excellent job describing aspects of your experience, ambiance, flavor, service, tenderness v flavor of the meat, etc. and price, as it would be important to viewers. Well done.

As someone who grew up in Brooklyn NY, I was spoiled with riches for all the Jewish delis there were at the time (late 70s into the 80s and 90s) which includes in NYC itself. Brooklyn had some amazing Jewish delis back then which I still say were better than Katz's or 2nd Ave. but I digress. I've had the pleasure of eating at all these places before though, and 2nd Ave. is the only place to me that comes close to Katz's overall. First off as you found out yourself UA, the matzo ball soup at 2nd Ave. is top tier and better than almost any other place in the 5 boroughs. Now as for the pastrami. I am of the opinion that nothing beats Katz's still to this day (though it's been a good 18 years since I've eaten at any of these places now) but 2nd Ave. is the closest they come. Piping hot pastrami, cut super thin. Amazing bark and fat streaks in every piece. Terrific bread (though the bread does look different these days, still looks good though) and mustard. THOSE PRICES THOUGH, HOLY COW. (literally) I know NY isn't cheap, but near $30 for a pastrami sandwich is crazy. Katz's at least gives you near a LB of food in every sandwich, and while 2nd Ave. gives you plenty also, not sure it's worth the prices at either place. Either way, I'm glad these places still exist since they are a dying breed of restaurant and an essential part of New York City. I'm glad you do these videos UA to show people all of this great food. Oh and sorry for the giant block of text :D

I have not been back to NYC in over twenty years, but is that the original deli on 2nd. I lived around the corner from Carnegie Deli, but would always take a taxi down to 2nd Ave, when Abe was still around, and I was very happy with them as well as Katz’s. I usually order the lean corned beef, but pastrami has to have the fatty tenderness and flavor. Great posting.

Next time, instead of Dr. Browns Cream soda, go with the Dr. Browns "Cel-Ray" tonic. And a bit of history - this 2nd Ave Deli is run by relative's of the original Deli that was on 2nd ave and hence its' name. This 2nd Ave Deli is between Lex and 3rd and they have a second Deli on 1st Ave in the 70's - so it averages out to 2nd ave. The pastrami is a bit lighter when compared to Katz's probably due to a bit less time in the smoker and that would account for it being a bit chewier then Katzs. I'm a 2nd Ave fan - and as Yogi would say about Katz's - No one goes there anymore, it's too crowded!

There’s a place here in Jersey out in Garfield(Bergen County) that makes a damn good hot pastrami. Supposedly 2 of the guys that work there (not sure if they are the owners) used to work at Katz’s. As far as ordering the food at the counter is concerned, they do it the same way as Katz’s, hand cut and even giving you a plate with a free sample of pastrami while you’re waiting. The quality is right on par with Katz’s, but the best part…the sandwich is $15 for the same serving size!
@shaboom36211 ай бұрын
As a native New Yorker I can say the OG Katz’s is a tourist trap with crazy long lines. If you have a craving go to their Brooklyn local. There are no lines as it is a small stall. Second Ave is just as good. And kosher if that matters to you. Plus the meat you get for the money at either establishment is worth the money.
