On this day in 1964 {January 5th} the Singing Nun performed "Dominique" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'... Two months earlier on November 9th, 1963 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; and on December 7th, 1963 it peaked at #1 {for 4 weeks} and spent 13 weeks on the Top 100... It also reached #1 in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand... The Singing Nun, aka Jeanine Deckers, passed away on March 29th, 1985 at the young at of 51... R.I.P. Ms. Deckers and Mr. Sullivan {1901 - 1974}

Jeanne Deckers aka The Singing Nun. “Dominque” took just 5 weeks to Top the American Billboard chart in December of 1963. It knock off Dale & Grace’s hit “I’m leaving it up to you” from the #1 position. “Dominique” spent 4 weeks at #1 on the US chart. She is the first and only Belgian to accomplish this fete (no other Belgian has been able to hit #1 on the US chart since). She died in 1985 of suicide (overdose of barbiturates and alcohol) with her partner on March 29, 1985. The Church excommunicated her because of her lifestyle; she was removed from the Church when her song was still an international hit. The Church kept all monies made from this record. Belgium raised her taxes when the news spread of her gay lifestyle. She died a poor and depressed woman; she owed the Belgian government about $50k upon her death. The Belgian government went after the Church after her death to collect her back taxes but the church refused to pay.

Very sad story. I remember she commited suicide but didn't know her lifestory after that song became a hit. Being a christian myself who am I to judge her when I walk imperfectly r or anyone else's that is for God and God only to judge. But that said RIP Jeanne. I hope you have finally found peace.

Not one picture of Debbie...very disappointing "video." Debbie Reynolds defined cute, pretty, and every other word meaning beautiful. She was much more than a good singer, a pretty girl, and a fabulous actress. Debbie Reynolds was a terrific person. At least one picture of her on this video would've been nice.

REPLY to Ann Heaney: Glad you're happy as an former Catholic turned Episcopalian, but the real Singing nun, Jeanne Deckers, most certainly did NOT leave the Catholic Church. She left the convent in 1966, became a lay Dominican, but still considered herself to be a nun in some sense, living chastely, and praying several times a day. In 1973 she became involved - as a lay woman - with the Catholic Charismatic movement, and was asked by a bishop to compose songs for it. She and her partner sadly died from suicide in 1985, but she nevertheless left a note saying that she had not departed from her faith, asked for - and was given - a Roman Catholic burial.

Hello Hans, Thanks for the info. about Jeanne Deckers and her lover. If only she would have told somebody that her and her partner were in this state....I voted a thumbs up comment on your comments. If it is a thumbs down then it was a mistake..I believe in the power of prayer. But I think much of her untreated clinical anxiety was why she prayed so much. The psychiatric drugs back then were not nearly as good as they are now. I remember in her book that she saw a therapist and a doctor. Unfortunately this did not sway the singing nun and her friend.

This was Hollywood's version of "Sister Smile" {aka Janine Deckers}. In the movie, she's inspired to write this song because of a boy named "Dom" [in real life, of course, that never happened]. MGM released the film primarily because of the success of Fox's "The Sound of Music" the previous Easter (they wanted their own box office success featuring a "musical nun"). The movie IS sincere, but oh, the corn! Unfortunately, Deckers' life was NOT a happy ending after she renounced her vows.

Debbie was very humble and self-effacing. In her as-told-to book, she kept comparing herself to Elizabeth Taylor, saying she (Debbie) "wasn't the hottest ticket in town." But she was an enormous star, certainly as popular at a time as Taylor. Sad to say, Taylor wound up enormously wealthy, Debbie not so much due to bad choices.

The Roman Catholic has many good qualities - numerous charities eg. But its stance on a lot of issues is outdated and needs to catch up to the times. Because of this I have switched to an Episcopal church which is also rich with tradition but allows women to be priests and deacons. I still enjoy the Singing Nun song. Although f have moved on I still have some Catholicism in me. The Singing Nun also left the Catholic church.

Debbie does a good job on this song. I saw the Singing Nun on Ed Sullivan years ago. Tragically, the real person left her faith and succumbed to her sexual orientation. She became a hermit and died some years later.

I typed 'passed away' because it seems gentler... Its so sad, a person has to be in great torment to resort to such a drastic measure... I am a Roman Catholic, but I do not accept the church's stand on suicide, I believe God is more understanding...

The lyrics are entirely different. The real lyrics are so militantly Catholic that the original single wouldn't have been as big a hit had it been in English. It tells the story of the 13th-century saint who founded the Order of Friars Preacher or Dominicans, the religious order to which the Singing Nun belonged..
