It was my understanding that the Real singing nun didn't want the fame and decided to go and help the poor in another country. The Church granted her that request and her privacy was respected and kept secret. Was there something else that happened to her? thx

Me and You She left the order in 1965, accompanied by her lover, Annie Pescher, whom she stayed with until their mutual suicide pact in 1985. So yeah, definitely something else.

---Its sad. From what I understand back then, Many girls went into the convents at around the ages of 13 to 14 to live in total poverty. Hardly the life experience nor wisdom to understand the complexity's of the world.... She was right that the church was responsible for the taxes and not her.. BUT Churches do not pay taxes anywhere, even though they received all of the money from her sales and quite possibly owned the music rights to anything she did. The fact that she committed suicide perplexes me because in the church that is the most unforgivable mortal sin of all. I wonder if she and her friend did, or if they were 'sacrificed'.. Hate to sound dramatic, but given the current knowledge of the church's fall from grace, I wonder... I am Catholic.. and love what the church Was.. not IS. Shameful
@laobok7 жыл бұрын
Me and You Though this doesn't sweeten the pill, one of them wrote on a suicide note that "[God] won't let us down". I think they truly believed that their only solution was to be with God. And yeah, despite the thing that some believe that you'll go to hell for committing suicide, it's probably(?) not that widespread. The Bible talks about suicide rather straightforward but doesn't consider it a sin, but I digress.

The French version -- which should be the only version - tells an actual story...an interesting and lyrical one. These lyrics sound like a stupid Sesame Street throw-away song. They could have literally translated the song and thereby saved the legacy of the story behind it, but this is the junk they came up with. Why? Because no one connected with this was talented enough to go line by line and figure out a way to translate the essence of the story in English and maintain it's basic rhythm and pentameter. They just wanted to sell records and movie tickets -- screw the artistic stuff.

To evoke onto the lives of religious as opposed to lay people is to diminish unfairly, to compare unfairly. The bible says: In the words of the Lord- "Judge not lest you be judged" When the prostitute was brought before the scribes in the time of Jesus. The routine punishment for the crime was to be stoned to death. Jesus said: " If there be any man here who has not sinned let him cast the first stone" Then as the woman was spared the ordeal Jesus told her "Go and sin no more". Further to compare in anyway the spiritual life of a religious to that of a private citizen is in my mind sacrilegious. Religious people join various catholic orders and convents because they have a blessed calling to do God's work. God Bless them. It is something private sacred and righteously between them and their God only.

Hey, Powerdriller: Jeanne Deckers left her convent, but continued to live by her vows as a lay Dominican. She later participated in the Catholic Charismatic Movement, AS a Catholic. When she and her partner committed suicide, she left a note asking for a Roman Catholic burial, and was given one. She identified as a Catholic her entire life in one way or another, and died as such. Whatever the faults of her church, (real, or imaginary and seething in your uber-biased mind) she managed to stay connected to it. In regards to her life and legacy, what SHE did and thought matters more than what YOU say. The "singing nun" by the way was a MOVIE. That you would bash the fictional "fucking nun chief" in the film for turning off a TV set is nuts, not to mention crude. The real Mother Superior of her convent ENCOURAGED her to write songs and perform and record them. Her fellow sisters were aware of her endeavors in this regard, and they and the work that they did the were the better for them. The last person who has "insight" enabling him to criticize how nuns lived or live, and what their calling entails, is you.
@annheaney511610 жыл бұрын
Hello. I learned something after reading your e-mail. With all of the mental health problems that Jeanne Deckers had I respect her songs that she created in spite of them. I listen to her songs everyday. If only she could have the quality of therapy and psychiatric drugs of today she and Ann Pecker might not have committed suicide.

The song is about Dominic Guzman, founder of the Dominican order, who played a big part in the Cathar crusade, in which the "heretical" southern France sect, the Albigensians, were slaughtered by the French king, actions which spawned the Inquisition and the term, "genocide".

Oh good, another crazy anticatholic spreading BS on a perfectly harmless little song. Can't you people just leave ANYTHING alone? NO, you can't. It was not just Catholics that opposed them, they were anti-civilization but please be sure to put your anticatholic spin on everything like you all do. Go read a book that wasn't written by an anticatholic, thanks. The facts: "They believed in a good spirit who created the spiritual, and in an evil spirit who created the material world, including the human body, which is therefore under his control. The good spirit created the soul but the evil one imprisoned it in the body, which is evil from its source. To deliver souls from this evil and punishment, the good spirit, God, sent Jesus Christ who is only a creature. Since the body is evil He could assume only a celestial one. They commended suicide especially by starvation, their endura, and in general, the extinction of human life, and advocated abstention from marriage, preferring concubinage as less evil. As they were a menace to governments and society generally, and resisted all attempts at their conversion, a crusade was organized by barons from France, Germany, and Belgium against Raymond VI, Count of Toulouse, who favored them. After defeating them with great carnage the barons, contrary to the designs of Pope Innocent III, continued a war of conquest. The sect disappeared in the 14th century."
