I was in the same situation you were. Fished all my life using spinning reels. A friend suggested trying a bait caster. Bought a good one, watched some videos, then took it out with me. Conclusion: way too many backlashes. Kept using it that season but then switched back to my spinning reels. I won't ever go to a bait caster again, not even as a back-up.

Hey, DeBo's! SHAWN here. Went out today and fished my friend's pond behind his house. Put my new Bait caster reel and ugly stick in to action. I bought a Spinning ugly stick and spinning reel combo at Wal-Mart for $36.00 for the whole combo. My friend bought me a Quantum Pulse Bait caster reel. Put it on the Spinning ugly stick rod 6'6 2 piece. I read that you can put a Bait caster reel on a spinning rod but not the other way around. Man, I am telling you after setting up the reel the way you told us too. It casted like butter! We got a bird nest a couple of on purpose just to learn how to get them undone. Worked every time. Caught 10 bass too. Please keep teaching us the way you fish. You got it down pat. The only thing is slow down a little when talking and teaching. I am 59 years old. Have a hard time keeping up. Sometimes. I have changed my rod, reel, knots and the way I have fished for years. It's been great fun this summer. Still going to fish into the late fall. Thanks again. See ya at the lakes. Shawn

Going camping tomorrow for a week and will fish everyday. Thank you for giving me my fishing life back.

Another huge tip. If you are going to get your first Bait caster, and you use a spinning reel. If you wind that spinner with your left hand then get a left handle bait caster. It isn't a left handed reel. I am right handed and want my strong arm on the rod. Plus you will have to change hands in the middle of the cast to get your weak hand back on the rod. A guy told me this when I was buying my first reel years ago. Best damn tip I ever got.
@DEBOSFishing5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, great tip man! Best to keep them the same way if you don't know any different. Thanks for watching 👊

I like to cast with my right and reel with my right. Guess I'm doomed for having to switch every cast. Do people tend to switch and try left hand when switching from spinning to baitcaster?
@noh89945 жыл бұрын
@@oxyfide It really is a personal preference but I was just tip off to this in the very beginning. Notice how many pro's are throwing right and reeling left. But you can catchum either way. I just am so glad to have started left reeling at the very first. It would be harder to switch now for sure.

Appreciate your instruction. I'm an old guy and fish a lot. But not very good at it. (So the wife says). You give the best info, in the fewest words, as fast as humanly possible, and you obviously have fun doing it. I appreciate the non-Hollywood style. I've seen lots of backlash videos. No thumb, lots of thumb, curse out the left side of your mouth, only the fg knot will cure backlash, - you name it. You've given the best all-round instruction on how to avoid backlash. Don't change your style - and great editing as well.
@DEBOSFishing6 жыл бұрын
Hahaha I appreciate that a LOT! The only thing that cures backlash is practice. Put the time in and I'm confident anyone can operate one. Greatly appreciate you watching and taking time to comment. This is so much more complex than the 40-year-old Johnson reel I've used since childhood. With that, hold the thumb button, do a typical overhand cast, release thumb button outright at apex of cast. Done. Never had backlash on that type of reel in all 30 years I've used it. Only reason I bought one of these newfangled sci-fi reels is that's all they're selling for under $100 these days. I tried casting like I'd done for 30 years, and it took a nose dive at about 30 feet and looked like a box full of Christmas lights. Gotta say, I was pissed, took it back, and they told me everything I knew about casting doesn't apply to this kind of reel. They kept calling it a "bait caster," which makes no sense because who fishes with a rod and no bait? Anyway, the video was helpful. Guess I'm back to beginner angler until I get down the fine motor movements needed for these reels... magnets and carbon fiber in a fishing reel... seriously, this is like some sci-fi shit.

No magnetic brakes, no spool tensioner...lol. I still use reels old Abu reels on some of my rods with no brakes...some from the 80s, but the new advanced ones are nice for sure. Really great video. Spent a couple hours out with my new baitcaster. Through trial and error, focusing on clean form, playing with the reel tension and drag, and thumbing it different amounts at different times, I was just starting to get the hang of it. I went from a backlash one every cast, to every other, to every few. I even managed to catch a nice, chunky bass with it. Good instructional series. One thing I would like to share is over spooling a reel will add to the backlash dilemma, and reduce casting distance and keep a person's head shaking wondering what is going on ? Especially when you tried every setting on a reel. So pay attention to how much line you put on a reel. I had an experience where I didn't realize I over spooled a reel just a tad too much with 50lb braid, and the line on the spool would rub against the reel seat unbeknownst to me. When I would cast, it would immediately backlash after only casting out about 20 feet. As soon as I realized this issue and took some line off, everything went a smooth as could be. Just my .02 cents.
@DEBOSFishing6 жыл бұрын

I love that people make videos to help people its awesome when we have so many in the fishing community to help each other. That being said just get out there guys. You're gonna get a rats nest backlash no matter what and when you do guess what? You'll learn how to dig it out and get rid of it. Its not fun but a necessity. You'll also learn how it happened and hopefully just not repeat it. I think a lot of people are still intimidated and shouldn't be, a rats nest is not gonna hurt you and neither is learning so just go do it!

I honestly think centrifugal brakes are better but if you are new and really worried get yourself a bass pro qualifier. That reel can teach you to become proficient in both, one or the other, and keep practicing with feathering your spool. When I first started I freaking hated magnetic brakes. But that's because I didn't understand what it was doing. An understanding for how your equipment works goes a long way.

Especially when you have the reel & know better. Thanks for the tip on my new Piscifun Phantom centrifugal setting. It casts REALLY smooth and far. You have to be sure not to overspool w/ line tho...not even 1/16 or it doesn't adjust at all. The right (perfect) amount & amazing. What is your setting when you pitching and flipping?
@DEBOSFishing5 жыл бұрын
I keep the settings the same as when I pitch and flip as I do casting. Spool tension so there is only a TINY bit of side to side play. I adjust the brakes so I can cast comfortably.

Man, I can't tell you how much I needed this. 2 years of trying to fishing with a Baitcaster reel and I haven't caught a fish. I was so frustrated with the bird nesting and had to carry a spinning reel with me for backup. I am inspired to pick my baitcaster back up and practice proper technique. Thanks again brother!
@AshmeedMohamed4 жыл бұрын
Damn, I bought onee of these kinds of reels and didn't even know it had brakes until right nowLOL. I had to develop the thumb technique on my own. This would have been much easier haha

I've been fishing baitcasters since I was 10 years old and got a Shimano Bantam for Christmas, that was 42 years ago. Although your video didn't teach me anything I watched it because I like to see other peoples perspectives on things like this. I must say, you did an AMAZING job of explaining all the physics, principals and reasons for settings. I am certain you turned many baitcaster nightmares into baitcaster dreams with this tutorial and for that I appreciate it. Excellent work my friend!

How long did it take you to learn how to use a bait caster? When did you feel comfortable with it?
@DEBOSFishing4 жыл бұрын
It takes a bit. I started when I was young. The most important thing is to just keep putting time in on it. I'd say after a season you should feel comfortable with it.

I’ve just started playing around with my first baitcaster and the one thing I’ve learned is that the easiest way to remove a backlash is with my pocket knife 😩😭.
@DEBOSFishing4 жыл бұрын
Lol it can seem like that at first. Turn the brakes up and start with more of a sidearm lobbing cast. As you get more comfortable back the brakes off. Like anything new it will just take some practice. Good luck man!

Debo, I’ve been watching your videos a lot and I think you are possibly the best teacher when it comes to bait selection and combo setup I have learned so much from you. My only point of contention is something that many fishermen simply don’t care about and that’s the ethical side of fishing. I have come to use barbless hooks because they are much easier on the fish and if you choose to throw the fish back which is mostly what I see you do in your videos I think it is the more humane option. You could say it doesn’t make a difference but I think it does and with modern hook shape/design you won’t lose as many fish with a barbless hook as you might think. Also, consider releasing fish gently back into the water and maybe set the drag on your reel a little bit lighter and don’t crank on them unnecessarily hard (don’t reel in when they’re fighting hard) so that you aren’t traumatizing the fish and lowering it’s chances of survival due to multiple factors. After all, the fish being alive and healthy are why we are able to go fishing and I would love your videos so much more if I saw a little more of the ethical fisherman that I’ve described thank you Debo for the vast knowledge you’ve given me as a fisherman and also the entertainment of just watching you fish you are truly one of the best KZbin fishing channels and I hope you can incorporate a little of what I have said here into your fishing peace out feeshin friend
