I agree about the "rolling coal" thing. We get this in the VW TDI community, as well. Everybody wants a hood stack, and everybody wants to roll coal. Then they wonder why they get treated like red-headed stepchildren.
@JosephArata
@JosephArata 2 жыл бұрын
People think they are leaving performance on the table if they aren't running hot rich fuel, which is completely ass backwards. You don't need 1800 degree F EGTs to make power, you're just throwing fuel out the exhaust for a smoke show. In a spark ignition engine, if you aren't running 1800 degrees or possibly 2000, you probably aren't making enough power. But compression ignition is completely different and nobody really understands that air surplus will produce power, with longer engine life.
@michaelblacktree
@michaelblacktree 2 жыл бұрын
In my experience, most of the guys who "roll coal" are just doing it for giggles. They don't care about performance. They just want to blow smoke in somebody's face.
@JosephArata

@@michaelblacktree Show them the numbers, if they still don't understand, they need their play toys taken away from them. Because they're going to ruin a good thing. Commercial diesel already gets a bad rap because of these stupid light duty pickup truck assholes here in the US. Nobody wants diesel engines because they think they are "dirty" or "cost" too much.

Yea one is beholden to an electric grid. The other can run off various fuels all over the world. Ever heard of the coconut rebellion? Indigenous peoples. Blockaded by military. Continue to drive around diesels. They had been making coconut oil in their culture for thousands of years. And the vehicle can run on coconuts indefinitely. Each his own science. …. More like one beholden to The grid. And… One free to roam indefinitely on renewable resources

14:26 the Volkswagen diesel scandal is probably one of the most overexaggerated industrial incidents of the last two decades. The engines in question did not produce any more particulate matter or carbon monooxide. The only issue they had were NOx emissions, which are a direct result of high pressures and temperatures leading to high efficiency. In the aftermath other manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz, GM, Porsche, Renault and Volvo admitted that they manipulated their ECUs as well to cover up NOx emission above the limit.

Pikes Peak looks like a stunning location and there seems to be a whole load of fantastic shots available for the cameras. To me anyway, it looks like many of the best shots are from perfectly safe locations too, so no need for spectators to take the stupid risks we see at so many road-race/rally tracks. Shame the weatherman never got the memo but a great wee documentary guys - could have been a bit longer. IWould have been good to stay for the actual event but it kinda makes sense, filming a video like this during practice, with less crowds and more chance to talk to the drivers/crews.

The soot production is a result of part of the fuel not burning properly, This makes the Black smoke so you waste power , fuel ,money and pollution all pretty stupid.

I'm puzzled by the money and time thrown at the Achates OPOC engine, partnering with Ford and Cummins and then nothing? Even the Army invested in this engine. Interesting concept with two pistons in each cylinder and two crankshafts but I still think a 4 stroke OPOC would be better (like two flat head blocks bolted together with a thin spacer between them. The injector would be in the spacer. The Czech T64 tank used one of these 2 cycle OPOC engines which produced 1,000 Hp so the concept is far from a new idea. Emissions have been an issue, usually 2 cycle engines have problems with emissions, aka Detroit 2 strokes.
@connerlabs
@connerlabs 2 жыл бұрын
As far as I know an opposed piston engine must be 2 stroke because a 4 stroke needs poppet valves and the opposed piston engine has nowhere to put them.
@jeffsnider3588
@jeffsnider3588 2 жыл бұрын
You're correct Steve, at least all I have ever seen were 2 cycle, but a 4 cycle can be built and I have seen two examples. Both were prototype basically being made from two flat head lawn mower motors with the cranks chained together and engines assembled with a thin spacer between the blocks. The valves had room to open and close and the spark plug was in the spacer. Not sure why the 4 cycle versions are not evolved into production. The advantages of OPOC as has been stated is long stroke with relative slow piston speed since there are two cranks/pistons/rods covering the total stroke. I can attach a link to one of the test if you are interested.

I get that electric is quick, but lets face it, they will never be as exciting as the rumble of a diesel or V8, the top end scream of a small capacity gas engine or the high pitch wine of a turbo. It's about "feeling" the speed in your chest as much as seeing it.

If it doesn’t thump your heart it is sterile. Miss the old days of Formula 1 with their NA 3.5L V8, V10, and V12’s.

I would rate the best sounding engines from best to worst as: Lamborghini V-12, Honda V-10, Ferrari V-12, Renault V10, Yamaha V-10, Cosworth V-8, and any Judds .

You could do a "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" version of this race. What could possibly go wrong?
