I believe Robert would be better husband to Debra than Ray because Ray takes Debra for granted. Ray’s problem is that he wants Debra to take care of him the same way his mother does. Robert appreciates & respects Debra because he understands what she’s going through as it pertains to Marie.

Robert was always infatuated with Debra right from the start. His neverending jealousy toward Ray, who pretty much took Debra for granted after they got married, only fueled his infatuation for her even more. Fans found Robert's attraction toward Debra creepy, and at times it was. But now as fans look back on this show and see just how despicable Ray was, especially as a husband and father, they wish Debra ended up with Robert instead of Ray.
