Debugging Battery Drain (w/ a Thermal Camera)

My truck battery kept dying after sitting for a couple weeks. In this video, I use a thermal camera and surprise myself by quickly finding the culprit!

Just a couple of points, if you don't know about it already, 1) the IR camera only measures the surface temperature and 2)emissivity is important and can lead to misleading results if you don't understand it. Basically if a surface is shiny and reflective you don't measure just the item surface but also a proportion of the temperature of the reflected image. Try measuring the surface of a mirror without your reflection in it and then repeat the exercise with your reflection in the mirror. I used to spray bits of engine with matt black spray paint before measuring them (we used to measure the temperature of tortional vibration dampers on engines under development to check that we'd speced them right) to make sure the emissivity was as close to 1 as we could get it)

Omg man you saved me lots of work i was watching your video and thinking where am i gonna get a thermal camera then i saw you pull the OBD scanner and i remembered i have one and i keep it on the truck dude you saved me lots of work in the cold i was over seas and thinking about how I'm gonna fix it when i get home

Thanks for posting. I had same issue. Killed one battery, you saved my replacement. And i didn't even need to buy an infrared camera. Just forgot I left that plugged in 100 jump starts earlier!

Good video, hope your doing well. I've been guilty of forgetting my obd2 device plugged in as well. Just been lucky that the one I used didn't drain my battery. Not sure why but anyways good to see that infrared device being put to good use.
