To be fair, the 'throw a sheet over it' one isn't as ridiculous as it seems when you consider how this was actually shown to succesfully defeat a Dalek in one of the Peter Cushing movies, so you can't blame people for absorbing it into their zeitgeist. Bernard Cribbins is being menaced by a Dalek, someone tosses a sheet on it, and then it just kind of sits there not knowing what to do while he escapes.

The Sheet one is actually not so far fetched but it would not take a Dalek Long to remove it... And The Dalek Shields are "Kinetic Shields" - They are meant for stopping, destroying and dissipating energy from incoming "Ballistic / Energy Type" weapons... So would NOT affect a sheet!

I think we need to find a new weakness for a Dalek similar to (but slightly less ridiculous than) gold for the classic Cybermen. Like imagine if something could specifically react with Dalekanium like an acid or another metal powder that could be small enough to penetrate the shield. Or better yet, what if there was a creature whose genetic makeup was a natural antithesis to Dalek shield design, Dalekanium or even the Dalek creature itself similar to how people are allergic to cats, dogs etc. Just this week I came up with a story based on the premise of “what if the Daleks were delicious” in that either humans discovered that the many mutations of the Dalek creature has unintentionally turned into a super food like no other that reduces the demand on cattle and farming. Or what if there was a species that specifically saw Daleks as a delicacy and hunted them for that reason other than survival. What if there were a creature whose entire body structure had bones and muscles in a constant state of flux so that the Dalek death ray’s ability to scramble them was rendered inert… These are all options that I believe could and should be explored. They’re the most feared and unstoppable creatures in all of fiction and should be respectably beatable beyond the restrictions of production or the intelligence of the writer.

The Cybermen were weak to gold because their respirators couldn't filter them, due to the high malleability of gold. I don't think thats ridiculous, more so plausible that it would be a very real oversight, due to not everyone just carrying around gold, or even being strong enough to lift it.
@crimsong8068
@crimsong8068 Жыл бұрын
Daleks in the classic series were weaker than in the new one, there were several times when basic human weaponry bested them. But in the new series, that was dispelled as early as "Dalek." (Which does neatly show how much they advanced.) One could argue a lack of weaknesses makes them a more serious threat (just like how Cybermen are now immune to gold,) but I do like the idea of a creature or substance that they are vulnerable to. Both sides have merit.

The ultimate weakness of the Dalek race is the Joker. The wildcard. Whether this is the Doctor, or a race of Daleks from another universe, or an esoteric-beyond-belief Time Lord weapon, the Daleks are intrinsically an arrogant species, and a highly logical one. A force seeking to defeat the Daleks should seek to introduce unpredictable factors into the mix that the Daleks can't react to swiftly enough. In other words, Daleks are weak to macguffins.

@@BEANBOYOBEANITH I’ll concede it’s a fine explanation but has no basis in real science so it’s ridiculous. Non-corrosive metals have no reaction to water or acids so how could that possibly affect a cyborg’s respiratory systems? And why gold? Why not Brass, Bronze, Steel (which the Cybermen are commonly made of…) etc? They chose gold purely for production purposes to the point where they eventually made it a comedic gag and eventually wrote it out knowing it was the right kind of silly (emphasis on the RIGHT kind and I don’t hate it at all, this is just thinking as a logical writer… a Logician of you will…)

Daleks aren't just space tanks, but each dalek is capable of exterminating all life in the universe on its own, albeit slowly. they can manipulate time and they never really die.

I understand where these "criticisms" came from, after all, Daleks are basically silly 60s sci-fi monsters that endured. At first glance, Daleks look silly, but once you get into the meat of most Dalek stories, you find that that are both cool and scary while they're on screen. These sound like criticisms from people who haven't seen much Doctor Who. I'm so sick of the "JuSt ClIMb ThE StAiRs" comments. Daleks when used right can be scary.

In the first story 'The Daleks' at the end were seen to have been pulled/pushed over or the aftermath of this during the Thal attack on the city. In Dalek Invasion of Earth one Dalek was seen to be pulled over during the saucer attack and later one was seen at the end actually being carried by several people! Those mine workers were likely extra strong 😉 So pushing or pulling them over was not out of the question.

While yea the whole spinny mid section thing is like a coin flip if they will even use it or not, i could believe that the executioner daleks were stripped of this in favour of having more stability with their new weapon. I have nothing to really back this up, but i believe the daleks would be the kind of species to lock off one advantage in favour of another if it loked like it would help. I recall them also being able to turn off their eyestalk lights and that they didnt make much noise while moving (though i am probably just misremembering on that latter one. I'll have to rewatch the episode ti make sure) so maybe they was also built more for stealth, maybe they was the kind of daleks meant to hunt you down silently, only really letting you know they were there when they scream the iconic exterminate and by that point you really are already dead, especially so thanks to the rapid fire weapon.

My strategy is simple, throw a sheet over it then run up stairs then close the door, then run off as far as my feet could take me, my reason for the strategy is because it would take time for the dalek shield to burn the sheet, and by then I hope to be gone, and locking the door, the stairs is to delay it as although they are capable of going up, it may take some time

there is a intresting weekness shown in doomsday for the new iteration of the daleks and that is they seems to be week to lightning based weapons at least for a short time till they could adapt their shields. enough of them as a alpha strike could take at least a small group out if you knew your weapon would be affective. as in the show it seems to disrup their shields and weapons. maybe combine it with a high powered rifle to snipe the eye peace or even weapon wilst the shields are affected

If I was trying to deal with some Daleks, I'd try and trick them into shooting each other. Say your reflexes are good enough that you could dodge the death ray whilst another Dalek is behind you. Unlikely? Probably! But not only is one of the only sure-fire ways to kill a Dalek is by having it shot by another Dalek, but also if you're up against a Dalek it's likely you're going to die anyway unless someone like the Doctor is nearby to get you out of it, or if you have weapons powerful enough to fight a Post-Time War Dalek with its heavy defences head on, so you might as WELL give it a go, right? Edit: Recently watched Eve of the Daleks and oh my god they actually did this

In the age of modern warfare Daleks would have to contend with stuff like Long Mobile Range Artillery ,Drones, Hyper Sonic Missiles, RPG's, Anti-Tank Missiles (NLAW, MILAN & Javelin), we have our own tanks of course which can fire at targets at such a long distance that you wouldn't even see it coming you'd just be dead. Can Modern day Daleks survive in a modern day war environment? You can have all the Daleks in the world and they can be taken out by Kamikaze drones with the right amount of explosive! Classic Daleks would be the most vulnerable to modern warfare, it would sort of be a cake walk with the right tactics and weaponry.

@Dalek Bumps There is a Weakness that the Shields help compensate for - But are NOT prefect against... One that was actually created by Terry Nation himself... and comes from the issue of Not knowing which Dalek was speaking in any scene... Yes, It is the BULBS on its head!!! According to Nation, trying to help build a canon for the daleks - The Inside gets VERY HOT and can inadvertently kill the Mutant inside, so excess heat is dissipated through the Vents in the Dalek Dome with some being stored as Energy, the Bulbs will take some of the excess energy and use it when a Dalek Communicates to further dissipate excess heat... Smash the Bulbs, COOK the dalek! But to do that you would need to be in Close Quarters, And NO ONE wants to be Close Quarters to a Dalek! (All that excess Energy... Yeah... The Storage Banks can be used to create an Energy burst around the Dalek Too... Rarely used as it also causes issues for the Dalek, but yeah... Go Hand to hand with a Dalek - It could Just Nuke you!)

I would also like to point out that just run around it would still definitely work. They rotate but they don't rotate quickly. Magnetic mines should work. They used them in WWII, the Germans I think. Not magnetic in a stick-to-the-hull sense but a large-metal-body-nearby-triggers-it sense. Funnily enough I though magnets while watching this video. I was reminded of the lone Dalek in Jubilee, and how it was held in place in its cell with a strong magnetic field. The issue would be that you'd need very strong magnets so I don't think it'd be feasible to use them as battlefield weapons so much as a defensive installation. Magnetic mines are perfect though. In regards to the eyestalk vulnerability... yes it's possible to blind even a protected dalek. that has been shown in series. But the major problem with the eyestalk is its range of movement. And the New Paradigm Daleks seem to have a solution. Closer inspection of the mount of the eyestalk on the New Paradigm ones shows that the mount is now the same as the manipulator arm and the Gun stick mount. so offering a greater range of movement. In effect; the daleks have acquired a sort of peripheral vision, albeit in a conical field. Couple that with the dome's ability to turn, and creeping up on a dalek becomes a lot harder. So one Vulnerability is dispensed with. And that new eye look... Maybe its a biological component. made to be a sort of inverse Cybernetic attachment. And easily grown/cloned so as to be replaceable. We know that Daleks can use their own tissues to create ne daleks; so... it something to think about.

@@OptimysticPessimyst three scenes I'd like to see from a Dalek-themed episode of a DW spinoff that was aimed at young adults instead of kids: 1) actually seeing a person burst into flames when they touch a Dalek shield as described in 'Dalek' 2) the manipulator arm extending to 4-5x its original length, grabbing someone's head at the far end of a corridor, and smashing them into the ceiling and walls 3) someone trying to physically attack a dalek with a melee weapon, only for it to explode into shards of molten metal RTD had better deliver on the Disney+ spinoffs because its a great opportunity to build on through fear factor of the Daleks

Well the eye weakness does work in New Who, not only with the Dalek blinded in the Game Station but Ace beat the hell out of a Dalek a second time. I can't say for certain if it'd work but I'd personally think it worth trying a Javelin missile on a Dalek.

The only time we've seen bullets affect a Dalek eyestalk was using guns from the far future, which use bastic bullets from Revelation of the Daleks. And Ace's baseball bat is powered up with alien tech (it was destroyed in Remembrance, but according to the expanded media, the Seventh Doctor later repaired it)

@@dalekbumps I was wondering about the bat, like, I was surprised to see it reappear. Pleased, but surprised. As for the effect of the bullets, I was under the impression that in the episode Dalek, the reason the guards in Van Statten’s vault didn’t damage it was because the captain arrogantly ignored the Doctor’s advice. This is conjecture but I think you can argue that the fact the Doctor suggests it means it would have worked had the guards listened. Nine was post-Time War, he knows the capabilities of the Time War Daleks, he knows about the force field. How much fighting had he done as the War Doctor? He would have had intimate knowledge of the Time War Daleks’ weaknesses. Had it been so hopeless, he certainly would have told them to run rather than fight.

@@idontlikeitproductions3509 you make a solid argument, but I've always thought of that as the Doctor just maximising their chances of survival, he doesn't seem convinced it will work he just says it might give them a chance And there's also UNIT in Series 4 to take into account, if anyone's going to know about the eyepiece weakness its them, yet their weapons are completely ineffective in The Stolen Earth
@idontlikeitproductions3509
@idontlikeitproductions3509 Жыл бұрын
@@dalekbumps True. Though the eye being a proper weak spot didn’t seem to appear until Resurrection, and in that and all subsequent classic Dalek episodes, UNIT was never involved. Not to say the Doctor wouldn’t have told them of that weakness at some stage, but that fact leaves room for reasonable doubt. Plus, rather irrelevantly, the marksmanship of the UNIT soldiers in Stolen Earth is atrocious, firing from the hip like that, they would have killed everyone in that room without the Daleks’ help. So no surprise they never hit the eye.

@dalekbumps
@dalekbumps Жыл бұрын
Not really. The Dalek in question was severely damaged, using a casing built from inferiormetals sourced from Earth. By hooking the microwave and oven parts to the casing, the Doctor basically turned it into a giant conductor for heat, and the non-Dalek alloys couldn't handle the stress. It would never have worked on a standard Dalek casing, it only worked because the casing had been built from scrap. Also, don't forget that this stillndodnt actually defeat the Dalek. The casing was damaged but the creature itself survived

Daleks are as weak or as powerful as the writers want them to be. Very, very inconsistent. Sometimes you can push them over a cliff or throw a sheet over their head or laser gun them... other times they're almost indestructibe war machines. Hell, I've seen Daleks get killed with spears and clubs (I think it was in Death to the Daleks).

Most Doctor who villian factions are written so poorly. The daleks dont look like a threat and more like a tin can. And the fact that they often get out tricked by the main cast so many times makes them appear incompetent. The daleks actually need to behave competent and get some redesigns. Maybe showing different daleks who were build for different purposes would help, like a gigantic siege dalek.

Honestly, this "kid war" escalation of Dalek strengths vs. weaknesses is pretty boring. Can't get up stairs? Nuh-uh, now I can fly! Small cone of fire and slow turns? Nuh-uh, now my midsection rotates! Bullets and grappling? Nuh-uh, now I have a super shield! It removes a lot of nuance from their character and closes out storytelling opportunities. It also makes their physical purposes more difficult to understand visually; a tank will outgun you from afar, but it can't shoot from up close! The Daleks think themselves the supreme beings of the entire universe, and that notion is way more interesting if they AREN'T perfect murderbots. Ideologically, what constitutes Dalek superiority is what constitutes a Dalek, which includes the Dalek "weaknesses". If they were concerned with being the objectively best and most lethal survivors ever, they would evolve themselves into, like, tardigrades capable of mitosis that generate a ridiculously potent virus or something. It's wrongheaded storytelling to think that Daleks are literally the ultimate killer beings and we simply haven't reached adequate portrayal of them as such. If they're the ultimate beings, why do they build themselves with only one eye?

@@voluntarism335 Daleks are NOT the ultimate killers. They say they are, and they're very scary and destructive, so it's spread like a meme in the Who universe. Their ideology/aesthetics limit them too severely; being a Dalek means being a big, clumsy lump with limited vision, limited movement, limited manipulation, limited firepower and limited thought. Every single aspect of a Dalek is limited by adversary control. How can you be an ultimate killer if you are literally unable to process concepts like pity or elegance, or get through crawlspaces? Like, think about it. You quite literally can't be a Dalek unless you're an octopus in a big, vertical tank that has less of a field of fire than a real tank. You HAVE to have one eye, only one usable limb and no flexibility. You'd think the geniuses of murder would use the unrestrictive process of design to give their tanks 360 degrees of vision, field of fire and movement. Instead, they choose to remain Skibidi Toilets, because in reality, they are philosophically limited. If viruses could travel in space, Daleks would be obsolete. That's why Davros says that kind of power would set him above the gods.

This reminds me of how Terry Nation really hated how the Doctor mocked a Dalek in Destiny for being unable to chase him over a short climb into a small-ish opening. Terry Nation's solution was to never show Daleks being stumped by short climbs into small-ish openings, which does nothing about the actual weakness itself. Kinda like how Xenomorphs have to be made threatening by putting them in tight, dark corridors with lots of turns.

I’ve always hated that scene of the guy running around the Executioner Dalek and taunting it. Like stated in this video, it’s pure plot contrivance (aka bad writing) that it even happens in the first place. An instance of the writer seeing a stupid meme online, and not doing any research, or even thinking about it for more than five seconds, and decides to just include it. Why? For the lols! Its funny! Ain’t it funny to see a Dalek be stumped by a mere man because he’s running around it?! 😂 No 😠 No it is not 😡 It’s stupid and it says more about the writer where they value comedy over consistency and logic. Not to mention that it’s just plain insulting to see one of the main/iconic villains get reduced to a joke by an awful writer. It was terrible when it happened in the Mandalorian, not just that stupid scene with the scout troopers, but also every other depiction of stormtroopers. Period The Daleks deserve better
