We all spend way too much time staring at computer screens and our phones. Most people will eventually experience some discomfort or eye strain while staring at screens for a long time but do these screens really hurt the eyes?
Here I break down some of the concerns about digital screens and what the published science really says about computer screens and their effect on the eyes.
The main issues revolve around how screens (and near work) can influence eyes to get worse (stronger glasses prescriptions), if blue light from screens can hurt our eyes, and how digital screens cause computer vision syndrome, including dry eyes and eye fatigue.
I hope you find this video helpful and please comment with any questions you have. I take all of your comments and questions seriously and I appreciate you. - Joseph Allen, OD FAAO, Dipl ABO

I started in IT 50 years ago.. I passed my driving license medical at aged 65 without glasses - 5 years ago - but certainly very little exposure to screens of any sort before the age of 20 - so maybe that is more significant..

Yeah... So I did surgery, fixed my eyes and in 1 year I already started seen blurry again. Now, about 2 years later, it's getting bad again. What a pointless experience. Well, if anyone out there is thinking about getting surgery while knowing that your lifestyle requires you to stare at a computer all day, just save yourself the time and don't do surgery.

Some days are blurrier than others! I found that stress and dry eye symptoms affect my vision when looking at screens and that that depends on the day. When I’m less stressed and anxious, the screen is more clear. That’s been my main guess about the seeming fluctuations.

I started wearing glasses at age 4 and pretty much failed my eye test every year in school. My myopia got progressively worse each year until I was about -12 in the left and -10 in the right. This was back in the 80s and 90s. However, once I was in high school, college, and grad school, things leveled off. I'm 45 now and terrified of retinal issues due to the myopia, but my prescription hasn't changed much in the last 20 to 25 years (aside from starting to need bifocals).

I was told I had 20/20 vision most of my life. Never had issues with my eyes until after I started a job that required me to look at a screen for 8 hours a day. My eyes started to hurt, and things from a far started to look out of focus. Went to test my eyes last week, only to find out I am near sighted with an astigmatism. Now need glasses. I'm just curious, when you were working on that job, how many hours of sunlight did you get on average? Because I've been reading some studies that imply that the lack of sunlight could cause myopia. Sunlight is needed to produce enough of a certain hormone (idk the name) that is needed to stop your eyes from growing.

The trend for vilifying blue light bothers me. I think it's important to manage due to the neurological effects mentioned, but, as far as circadian rhythm, that doesn't mean cutting it out wholesale. It means reducing it and cutting it out toward the evening. During the day, it's better not to block it. People are already often sleep deprived and dependent on caffeine, so having excessive melatonin during the day because they're blocking blue light isn't going to help their energy levels. Also per working up close, this is why I think we need to be more careful with not just screen time but reading time with kids. There's always this push for more reading, and indeed the mental stimulation and intellectual growth that comes with that is important. But I think it needs to be balanced to try and avoid eye related issues. The breaks and outside time mentioned are good examples of this, and something I'll definitely want to keep in mind if/when I end up raising kids of my own.

I can't look at any type of artificially lit digital display without instantly feeling sharp and lasting pain in my eyes. I developed it slowly around 10 years ago, and I strongly suspect my heavy computer use was the cause for the development of my issues. I can look at indirect artificial light, such as a projector or for example reading something which is lit up with a lamp. I have found no solutions other than to avoid lit digital displays completely. The alternatives I found were to use e-ink displays; Hisense A9 for my phone, Dasung Paperlike for my computer monitor. I also rebuilt an old monitor to a TLCD screen, i.e. I removed the backlight and the back frame, and I use sunlight to light the display up from behind. This is similar to an RLCD screen, only the light comes from behind instead of the front. These alternatives are the only ones I can use in order to not feel pain in my eyes. Whenever I avoid artificially lit screens for a while (perhaps a week or more) it takes longer before my eyes start to hurt when looking at an artificially lit screen. So the sensitivity of my eyes is linked to how exposed I am to artificial direct light. I have seen no research on this, as the condition seems rare. Though, I have met one other person in real life who shares my condition. My sources of information for potential solutions have been from the subreddit Eink and from the forum LEDSTRAIN. I hope this has been of help to anyone with similar problems.

I I’m 34. I have spent a lot of my life in front of tvs and screens. My myopia has always been bad, but I had never experienced eye strain or dry eyes until recently. Until recently, where I felt like my eyesight was declining at a much more noticeable pace. Sometimes, it feels like my eyes become instantly irritated as I try to look at a screen now. Its made it very hard for me to do the things I once loved. I read that having an inaccurate prescription or I corrected vision problems on lenses can contribute to eye strain. I’m a -17 in my left and -13 in the right with varying astigmatism in both. My doctor thinks RGP contacts will give me better vision, but I didn’t ask about eye strain or the dry eye I can’t seem to shake. I don’t have the contacts yet, but I still worry about how irritated my eyes are almost constantly now…

Hello, I wanted to say I’ve really enjoyed your videos. As a gamer who use to spend 5 hours playing video games in one sitting, I do believe it’s possible to damage your eyes looking at screens. I also have an ultra wide monitor which doesn’t help. About 4 month ago I was on vacation and I spent way too much time playing wow and I noticed after that week I was unable to look my monitor without my eyes watering or feeling like they were burning. It wasn’t just that monitor though, it was any screen that was bigger than my phone. Warm compresses did seem to help but only temporarily. I tried every over the counter eye drop I could get my hands on and none of them seemed to make a difference. Gel eye drops perhaps helped slightly, but again it was only temporary relief. Recently I went to see an eye doctor, and I was diagnosed with dry eyes. My doctor prescribed Retasis, hopefully it will help. Because of how my eyes felt I had to give up gaming. With gaming being a huge part of my life it was honestly very depressing.. So I wanted to say thanks for all the videos you’ve made on eye health. Your videos have been been educational and helpful.

Thanks for shedding more light on how our eyes react to screens! I'm having eye strain since a couple of years and am still trying to find a way out of this. Researching back and forth, it seems that there are several factors in newer technology that may cause it (temporal dithering, maybe other things we don't know about). It seems like most people can manage a bit of eye strain, but for some people, it makes screens unbearable. :( I really hope that both hardware and software will become more eye safe in the next couple of years! 🙏

Thanks for mentioning the temporal dithering, I personally don't know too much about it but I know a few companies that manufacture computers are doing a lot of research on it to try and make screens safer for the eyes. Perhaps one day I can collab with some tech channel on it 😃
@Zapirol
@Zapirol 11 ай бұрын
@@DoctorEyeHealth Temporal dithering is a form of sub pixel flickering to get smoother color gradients, as far as I understood. It's a possible suspect for some people's eyestrain and there's barely any way to turn it off in modern systems which is a bummer. But anyway, it's great to hear that there are tech people out there that are working on solutions for our eyes! A collab would be awesome! :)

I have been hardcore gamer ever since I was 10, now I'm 28. I started to develop farsightedness around 25-26, after over a decade of staring at a screen for an average of 8 hours a day. I struggle to see from a far like when I sit at the back rows in a classroom or even the middle rows. So today I had to go get checked out and they said that my "zoom" / "cylinder" is unadjusted and there aren't really any surgeries to fix that. I was advised to wear the glasses I ordered when I'm at the computer (because they add a blue light protection on top of the glass), when I drive and when I'm at the classroom. Which is basically most hours of the day. The optic doctor told me that the cause for the damage is most likely the fact that I spent so much time staring at a screen.

@DoctorEyeHealth Have you seen research on the effects of long term use of VR headsets? I was involved with the development of a VR headset for the video gaming industry around 2000. The market was killed when a major safety rating authority pulled their approval of the game systems. My understanding is the major issue was concern about effects on depth perception after long term use of VR headsets. VR is “stereoscopic” (2 images) and not really 3 dimensional since the focus plane/point is fixed. That is, the eye and brain are not getting the focusing location as a cue for determining distance in a VR headset. There were reports of people playing the VR games for hours, then being unable to mindlessly navigate a step down at a curb. The large arcade chains like Dave & Busters have liability insurance that requires games to carry all appropriate safety ratings. Losing the safety rating killed that particular headset market at that time.

Would you consider examing and possibly explaining the character of Derpy Hooves from "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic". She has an 👁️ condition that results in her 👀 facing different directions. We see in a flashback that she developed this condition while very young, and it progressivly got worst over time. I've always wondered how bad someone with this conditions vision would actually be. Would they be constantly misjudging depth and misreading things, or is it something she could learn to overcome with time and effort?!
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth 11 ай бұрын
Woah! Very cool question. Had to look up Derpy Hooves lol. Eye misalignments are called "strabismus". There are different forms based on how the eyes are aligned and how they move. For derpy, based on the images I saw, it seems like one of her eyes is angled up and to the nose, and the other is more down and to the nose. A person with that type of alignment would either 1) see double all of the time, or 2) suppress one eye and only consciously view out of one dominant eye, unless the dominant eye was covered, then the nondominant eye would un-suppress and start seeing again. Since this character may have developed it as a young child, they probably have learned to suppress one eye, otherwise, it would make it very difficult to function seeing double all the time. A person who is monocular or suppresses one eye may find some depth perception difficult, but most people with only one eye still understand and perceive depth due to environmental cues. Hope this helps! loved this question.

For years, my doctor has emphasized participating in outdoor & indoor sports to prevent an increase in prescription. Sometimes, there is a slight chance of improved vision. When doing sports, eyes will focus on objects nearby & from a far distance & continue to work on eye reflexes. I brought my sports goggles to the eye exam. I was informed about some serious sports eye injuries. I started wearing them after seeing other people getting injured & opponents threatening to hit me in the eye. Badminton. I refused to comply with opponents' requests I must wear contact lenses. He said it is unfair my eyes are protected. 🤦 Apparently, good sportsmanship & fair play angers people. I've taken the approach to educate people about eye health & safety. In badminton, people get injured when turning around to see their partner (racket/birdie in the eye) or the opponents is reckless at the net (head shot).

Hi Dr Allen I’m a big fan of your channel 😊 I was wondering if you could include neuropathic dry eye/blepharitis in upcoming content? I am in my 20s and work as a dentist but have been really struggling with this for around 9months, so much so that I am unable to work due or function properly due to facial pain and eye pain. I have tried absolutely everything (home care/ in office treatments/ medications from my doctor and ophthalmologist). The only things I haven’t tried yet are scleral lenses do you think these would be helpful? All other diagnoses have been ruled out regarding scans and tests. Thank you so much👁️

Ok so I been doing last year eye muscle exercises that lead to weird eye headaches for almost couple of months, Astigmatism grew as well after that.. When i have migraines or forehead headaches, i cant focus my eyes on anything, the vision is shaking+ i have dpdr and VSS.. I've got also a new pair of glasses that i wasnt comfortable at that time wearing it as it gave me strabismus, but now i kinda feel comfortable wearing it. What should i do Dr. Allen?!😢😢

Always infront of a monitor, yes your eyes get worse in terms of being able to see far away but apart from that i don't think so. Just an hour a day regurarly helps restore my sight but i haven't really lately tested it. But what i did find under 40min a day each week from trying exercise is that it did gradually restore my eyesight to see better for even objects far away. Although i had to stop cause pain.

I have your earlier video on migraine But in that you have not told this And I feel all the symptoms you mentioned in that video but you haven't mentioned the flashes of light. There is one more thing that I want to tell that if I continuesly stare at a blank wall, I feel that something is floating in my vision. And I want to say one more thing that you have really won my trust because whatever you have told is very true and correct.

Hey doc i wanted to ask about flickering of vision, like dimming of vision about 5 dims per second only happens after instant change of light from light to dark or waking upin dark or after using phone all day and going in dark and only for about half a second (doesn't not happen always ,sometimes and i have seen people on reddit who describe similar symptoms as me) some people have very extreme dims and brights but i have very mild. I do have mild visual snow with tinnitus and floaters from birth. Edit: i woke up early today and went out and found out that it happens for quite some time after waking up i just have to focus in on it or maybe it happens all the time i am scared

I've had myopia since birth but my parents only ever found out and gave me prescribed glasses when I was 3. Now my eye prescription has worsened to -8 in my left eye and -6 in my right eye. Is that bad or?? like in comparison to other people who have myopia how much is it worst. I plan to get eye laser surgery in the future but I never understood if there were any factors needed for me to get eye laser surgery, as in if my retina has to be in a certain way or whether there's a certain age I need to be to get it or whether if my eye prescriptions increase I won't be able to do the surgery. I've heard of some people's myopia prescriptions decreasing when they were around 18, is that possible? for your eyesight to get better? Also what are the chances I go blind with how bad my eyesight is. I've just been terrified of my myopia worsening so if you could help me out it'd do a real favor. Thanks for the video.

May not be the exact video for this question, and I asked this on one of your older videos (sorry for the duplicate). OK so I have the normal vision (no prescription) and i'm 57 years old with normal Presbyopia - to the tune of needing 1.75 to 2.0 for up close reading. I have found over the years that the Foster Grant multi focus glasses (zero at the top and 1.75 or 2.0 at the bottom) are perfect and continue to be perfect over the past 6 or so years for me. My problem is that I really want a better quality pair (better glass) that is more scratch resistance, etc. HOWEVER- I've actually tried three different times with three different ophthalmologists to literally have them replicate the exact grinding of the Foster Grant Multi focus. They failed miserably all three times. Not even close. I'm willing to pay top dollar for the better glass and better coating. My question is, why can't they get it right? Also, those three fails were probably 3 or 4 years ago, so I'm wondering if the big two grinding companies have gotten any better over the past 3 to 4 years? Is it worth trying again? By the way, I totally get that it's not the ophthalmologist's fault; they don't grind the glass themselves of course. I just want Exactly what those super cheap Foster Grant Multi focus offers in a much better quality material. Totally worth it for me to pay the $500 to $600 for the lenses vs the dirt cheap $35 for the CVS Multi-focus ones. My hope is that some day the big grinders figure this out, OR that Foster Grant branches out with a matching line of high dollar better quality longer lasting lenses. those cheapies from CVS have zero swim effect and absolutely perfect for computer-mid and up close reading. I would think there are Millions and Millions of regular age-impaired people just like myself that would jump at the higher quality glass. What say you good doctor? (love your videos).

It should be common sense, the human eyes weren’t designed to look directly into light. They’re designed to process reflected light into colors, shade (light and dark), shape and spatial orientation. Direct light over stimulates the eyes and tear ducts drying them out and tiring them. Also, according to the Mayo Clinic, long periods of staring at something at close range can actually change the shape of the eye. The shape of the eye has a lot to do with vision.
