I think there's a fundamental difference in downside risk between the couch joke and the eating pets lie, and that's that no one is actually put at risk of violence by the couch joke. The scenario with the eating pets lie is quite different, with bomb threats, state troopers in schools, etc. all going on now. And if actual violence does erupt, the consequences for the Trump campaign could, and absolutely should, be catastrophic.

(Mar-a-lago bills) Trump admitted he used the charity funds for political causes. He also admitted to claiming credit for monies that actually came from non Trump charities. Fraud on a multimillion dollar level. The suit accused the foundation of being nothing more than an empty shell, with no employees, and not having a board meeting since 1999. Fined 2 million, the 2.8 million ordered repaid, and the Foundation ordered dissolved. All public record. If anyone out there is still wondering if Trump thinks veterans are suckers, look no further.
