It's insane how good these two were at their roles, if I wasn't as familiar as I am with the Columbine shooting I'd have easily believed this was real footage. Bit of a shame none of them pursued acting further.
@voteZDLR Жыл бұрын
As far as I know they're not "actors" in that sense, the director found people who "felt" real. A good chunk of the movie is actually improvised, they just had a loose script. It's similar to the kids who were in another found footage movie called The Blair Witch Project. Although technically in that case they WERE trained actors they just didn't do anything else beyond that.
@alejorag Жыл бұрын
@@voteZDLR Ohhh, that'd make a ton of sense, kind of what I've heard referred to as "natural actors". My favorite colombian filmmaker Víctor Gaviria actually uses these a ton, he even made a documentary called "How to get birds to act" about one of his movies where the whole cast were a bunch of kids/criminals from the streets basically playing themselves. Come to think about it, I really love this technique.

The idea that Eric was the mastermind/leader is a common misconception. They were both equally engaged in the plan. It could even be argued Dylan was even more invested than Eric, to be honest. such an unforgettable masterpiece - a film that could have easily come off as exploitive, opportunistic and “too soon” feels authentic and grounded in it’s depiction of high school alienation. one of the scariest movies i’ve seen to this day.. and mainly due to the performances of Andre and Calvin, who are so scarily convincing for two kids with essentially no acting experience whatsoever. it really drives home the fact that no one really knows what bubbling beneath the surface of angsty, misunderstood teens - it makes you connect with them, hoping that their plan is a sick fantasy and they won’t go through with it.. which makes the last ten minutes so much more horrifyingly grim. the repressed anger and undertones of a homoerotic relationship between Andre and Calvin is subtle and provocative - definitely the most fascinating and disturbing film made about school shootings in america to this day imo, great vid

I have brought it up in conversation many times over the last 20 years, telling people it was the most messed up thing i have ever watched. Only by watching this i now realise that it was a movie and they were actors. I remember just being absolutely stunned at the end, even though i knew it was going to happen you just thought it wouldn't, because they seemed like decent young guys who just hated school. You are never really convinced that they were actually going to go through with it, which made it all the more shocking.

Same with that rampage movie it's like they wanted to spoon feed us that at that time because it had slowed down and they needed to push an agenda. That's why they did that sandy hook thing. Cause no one was shooting up schools anymore. That guy's dad was supposed to testify in supreme Court against a massive business he followed a paper trail and found billions of stolen money and had proof - that day. So they killed his wife shot up the school and made his kid a monster by blaming it on the whole family. Making anything he might have said in court incredible and he was no longer on the witness list.

The "horrors of reality" in that sense make terrible horror films. Especially considering people who like stuff like horror films have usually been there done that in terms of experience. So to them thats just real life, a part thats dark and most people have never seen, but not very scary, not much scarier than say driving day to day knowing youre far more likely to be mangled up or killed than you are in a school shooting. If driving's not scary why would the even less likely day to day shit lotto be scary? Now having your mind taken over by demon before being dragged to hell, thats scary. Because we dont realistically know if its possible or what it would be like. The root of horror is the unknown, so whats lacking here is the unknown.
@amodernalchemist432 Жыл бұрын
@@Tinylittledansonman excellent point! The unknown plays a large part in fear too, you're right, but most of the unknowns are based on unrealistic *mythologies or fables.* These stories are used to induce fear as a form of control. Like the Abrahamic religions, as prime examples, who tell their followers "If they commit sins, they will spend eternity in hell!" Now, what greater form of controlling the masses has worked more effectively and efficiently than those religious laws? They are thousands of years old and people in the 21st century still follow them...fear is the most effective tool for control! Look what Hitler was able to do just by using fear to it's full potential, he turned his entire country into jewish hating/fearing folk, seemingly overnight.

4:56 I think a big part of acting is that it's a human thing that people do for fun and for the love of it - even in a dark movie, you can have a fun family moment for the actors and the people watching can feel it. I think that's what's missing at times with the emphasis on SFX and such vs a movie with a tiny budget like this that just focuses on the acting itself and the story building and the love of acting - there's a reason to watch and love one more than the other or equally in different contexts. You can just feel a specialness from a scene like this - it's just acting and recording at its roots, a family improvising a scene together, you can almost hear the tongue in cheekiness when he says "today, you 18th birthday" like this sort of inside joke.

Come apart at the seems and their masks slip, ESPECIALLY Cal's because it doesn't seem like he wants to kill other people as much as he just wants to kill himself, but when you see that CCTV footage you realize that wasn't really true. He wanted to kill them just as much as he wanted to kill himself. It's more unnerving and shocking than Andre's development throughout the movie because he is noticeably off. I think the most shocking part of Andre's character is the end, when he hesitates to go along with Cal and shoot himself. Especially because he seems to have moved on from the pipe dream of running away with Cal when they burn their things.

my main issue with elephant was that it felt to "sterile". void of emotion. which is like fine for the first half of the movie, which just protrays like "a normal day at school" which can be quite sterile and emotionless. but the second half it is still void of many emotionions IMHO. like the killers expressing very little emotions while carrying out what they did. which is the opposite of what witnesses report of the real life equivalents. they made it look more like they are robots instead of people who let their dark thoughts and emotions overcome them
@chrisbeaumont46307 ай бұрын
The original movie Elephant was named after was also very sterile and emotionless, showing a series of random killings in Ireland during "the troubles," with pretty much no detail or dialogue. The title is a play on the phrase "the elephant in the room". It removes the motives and reasons behind the killings, instead just making you watch the reality and senselessness of such violence. The 2003 version of Elephant is attempting to do the same thing, showing a more objective version of a shooting, avoiding dramatising it as much as possible while attempting to shed light on a real social problem.

I just watched "Elephant" after seeing this video a few times. "Zero Day" completely smoked it. It says a lot when a movie made on a shoestring budget does a far more effective job of conveying what they wanted to get across than something with an immensely larger budget. "Zero Day" interesting. "Elephant" is extremely boring. Even the final sequence pales in comparison.
@b3nnyrabb1tАй бұрын
I HAVE SOOO MUCH TO SAY ABOUT HOW WRONG YOU ARE OKAY LET'S BEGIN. Elephant is a drawn out masterpiece of a movie because it is MADE to be boring. It is MADE for you to be so underwhelmed you forget what you're watching, or you don't care. Because the signs are there, and you're apathetic to them, THE WAY PEOPLE ARE APATHETIC TO THE SIGNS OF THIS KIND OF BEHAVIOR!!! It's a genius artistic film, with an entirely different take on the tragedy and how to portray it. Their message was EXACTLY what they showed in Elephant. Regular kids going about a regular day until it's NOT a regular day. The message was that you don't notice until it's in your face. Zero Day and Elephant had two different messages, and assuming they had the same one is EXACTLY why you think Elephant didn't do a good job showing it's message. It's understated on purpose, it's shot differently on purpose, and to assume that Elephant and Zero Day had the same message just because they were inspired by and about the same event is VERY much why you think Elephant didn't do a good job. Elephant is artistically done in a manner that tricks you. Zero Day is upfront with it. They're both EXTREMELY good films and I could go on for days about how the minimal, short lived portrayal of Alex and Eric and their relationship and their actions MAKE the movie, in a similar way as to how Cal and Andre's movie-long deep dive portrayal MAKES Zero Day the way that it is. I could go on and on about the contrasts and how they handled the portrayal of the shooting and the end and even the audience reaction. People who hear about one through the other immediately assume they're going to be the same, and that's EXACTLY what happened with you.

i've avoided watching this video for a while because of the title, but that was a mistake. this is a wonderfully put together video. i didn't think this movie was scary, moreso depressing. maybe im in the odd or wrong party, but i can't help but be sad. there's so much to this movie that just makes me... so sad. yes, andre and cal are horrid and they're planning a mass murder the entire time, but they're clearly mentally ill teenagers. if only they were paid attention to, if their families had noticed the signs, if people had taken steps to get them help or remove the guns from the home. calvin is such a clear depiction of a schizophrenic... coming from one. andre definitely has some black and white thinking and antisocial behaviors. both of them clearly needed help, and the fact that this could've been prevented just makes me so sad.

it's horrifying, but it's a fair decent anti-bullying movie. And I would say anti-violence movie in some ways, because it's demonstrate clearly, that your problems cannot be solved by violence and in the end you will die for nothing. And on top of that, cause even more trouble for your family, friends and other close people.

Hey, watched this movie last year while I was researching about columbine. This is by far one of my top 5 movies, possibly top 3. The movie does a really excellent job at realism and making it seem believable. Before watching the movie or even realizing it was a movie, I was clips of this movie online. Thought it was real at first. And I really like the found footage late 90’s aesthetic. Reminds me of the tapes that the actual shooters recorded. If you guys haven’t watched this, I recommend giving it a watch.

It's what they wanted and talked about in their journals. To leave a lasting impression and have movies about them. Also I noticed how they said they came up with the idea of school shootings when there had not only been a mass shooting at a primary school a few years before but also a large mass shooting that killed 35 people in 1996 here in Australia so they didn’t come up with the idea

@@TheGOATAtBeingBased what the shooting at a primary school? Well it’s the Dunblane massacre and the perpetrator shot himself before the police could get him so Eric and Dylan probably stole that from Dunblane and took credit and the one in Australia was the port Arthur massacre it’s the worst mass shooting in Australian history and at the time it was the worst mass shooting by a lone gunman until 2011
