I used to work in a cemetery. This appears to be a private family plot. Burials didn't have that many restrictions back in those days. Looks like someone is still taking care of the property. Headstone is is still the common term but it is also referred to as a marker. Awesome video!

do people still bury their own family on their land ?
@shawnpowell9506

@@ronniekarpinska4183 in some areas they can. But you would have to check with your state and local laws about that.

Yes, someone is still applying care to the site. Hence, it is NOT abandoned. A more appropriate and accurate label would be “I Found A Cool Cemetery In the Woods”. (Note: is is also not “hidden”).

Slocum Family Cemetery. The one at 3:27 is Ellen S. Slocum Dresser, 27 Jan 1837 to 19 June 1873. You can often find information at Find A Grave.

That’s freshly cut, looks like it was a skid steer brush cutter attachment with the fine mulch spread over the area so it was done quickly, but even if there weren’t trees it should be full of weeds or high grass by now that’s why it was cut very recently.

If you Bury one of your dead relatives on your property, you no longer have to pay property tax because you're land becomes designated as a graveyard which is a Exemption.
@lizreszke6183
@lizreszke6183 9 ай бұрын
I just googled "do you get a tax exemption if you bury a relative on your home's property in Illinois?", and this is what the law says: "Illinois law exempts property used exclusively for burying the dead from real estate taxation, including property used as graveyards. This exemption is found in Section 200/15-45 of the General Property Tax Act, Act 206 of 1893. The law also states that the rights of burial, tombs, and monuments on the land are also exempt from taxation while reserved and in use for that purpose. However, real property set apart for burial purposes can be exempted from taxation unless it is owned and held for purposes of sale or rentals." So, you can bury your relative on your property in Illinois, as there's no law against it, but you cannot have a house that anyone lives in on that land. If you have a separate property that you own, you can bury someone in that property and get the tax exemption. But if you're living in that land, you do not get any type of tax exemption.

It must already be designated as such. You can inter family there if it is already designated as such. You cannot bury someone on your property (not legal). You can’t just do that and then establish it as non-taxable.

i wonder if anyone from the family is still alive and knows about this, it’s a cool discovery non the less but would be really cool to find out past members of your family from nearly a decade ago tomb stones, wish we could see better what they say!

Markers are mostly metal, Tombstone or headstone is right. Old stones usually had foot markers too. Probably once a family cemetery. Cemeteries at churches are graveyards. Get a flash light to read gravestones. Hope someone takes an interest and cleans up. Thanks for the show.

My GG Grandmother converted her settler's plot into the town cemetary. It is still being used and well kept. I find deralict cemeteries profound and in need of volunteers willing to help with restoration and upkeep (with appropriate permissions).

I 100% agree! And I think this is a perfect hobby I can mildly get into with a small group or something. My bestie and I already stop at almost every lone Cemetery or big one we see in Wisconsin. I'm a former hospice/memory care cna abruptly cut short of my abilities physically that I knew for 12 yrs of working. This seems less physical strength for group clean ups and hey I still get my passion and weird peacefulness of end of life/post humous care. 💡 ty for the tip! 😎

Idk who raised you boys but you are very respectful! It's all the same thing tombstones headstones but those are old really old and they do look expensive but a lot of the old ones back then were like that! Thanks for sharing this with us! This is so sad but those are definitely someone's ancestors! That's part of why they started to dk the ancestors dna or 23 and Me tests because people used to keep real good track and at some point in time that stopped! Hell, people would go to another town or staye to go live with family aunts great grandparents or whatever family they had never met before and live with them sometimes bavk when even. They had never met before but they knew who they were! Things were so different!

That tombstone of Mary W wife of appears to be died 1884, I can’t make out the rest though or the irregular numbers on the very bottom. Sort of looks like 1600’s but not sure why.

Black light helps when you are trying to read old tombstones. Also it’s not likely the arrangement of the tombstones has anything to do with the view. Arrangement of the bodies is more connected to religious belief.

Liked the video. As far as what they are called, just say grave markers and the trolls won't come out from under their bridge😊. If you ever want to do this again, bring paper, artists' charcoal and hair spray. You can lay the paper over the names and use the side of the charcoal to read it easily. Then, lightly layer coats of hairspray to set the charcoal. They are called grave rubbings. Makes a nice souvenir, if it's your family, a momento.

This gravesite has long been forgotten. Chances are there really isn't anyone alive who remembers or even has knowledge of this cemetery. It's the same with a lot of cemetery worldwide. In time we are all forgotten,know matter what they tell you. Death is final. There is no coming back,there is no going somewhere else.its final it's the nothingness. You won't feel it so don't worry about it. People been gone for thousands of years. We will all follow suit. 100 years from now most everyone on earth will be dead. Sorry,but we don't make the rules.
