@@kingsolo6241 An ex girlfriend of mine, while watching me play a first-person shooter on mouse and keyboard - the only way I play FPS games - she proclaimed, 'But the mouse and keyboard makes it so that you don't even need to aim. You just point and shoot.' lol, that still cracks me up. She thought mouse and keyboard were so overwhelmingly precise, you didn't even need to aim. Compared to a controller, I'd say she was mostly right about that. I don't feel like keyboard and mouse is a handicap, but I absolutely think that using a controller is a handicap, pretty sure that's what she meant to say but didn't want to admit that PC gaming was so definitely the better option.

Yeah, if you look at it in the most superficial way possible, it may appear like that. Just like ten tall guys trying to throw a ball through a ring sounds rather dull, so why would anyone want to watch or play in the NBA? It's obvious that you never played quake duel. This in a fact a mental game, and what makes it so intense isn't only what you see on-screen, but also a decent amount of depth. However, in a time where everything in pop-culture and industry is being increasingly dumbed down and reduced to its superficial appearance, the original Quake franchise naturally lacks mass appeal. I am fine with that tho, to each their own. The other reason for Quake's inpopularity: It is too demanding for the vast majority of todays players. No joke here. Arena shooters are the absolute antithesis to casual gaming and skill compression (= high skill floor, low skill ceiling) and will therefore always be a hardcore niche genre. Also, lets be honest: QL is quite ugly for modern standards. And you already know about generic superficiality. Anyway, no one's obligerated to be non-superficial or non-casual. I sincerely like the franchise's community the way it is, small but caring. Quality over quantity.

It has nothing to do with skill level or requirements. The genre has lived its age and is substituted by other genres. Simple as that. UT 4, Quake Champions, Doom MP are not doing well and are an indication of it. The genre is dormant.

memorizing the map is the easy part, only seems crazy when you don't know them yourself. The hard part is predicting where your opponent is and keep control over the map. Sound plays a huge role same with item spawns. It takes alot to get a solid feel for the rhythm. And then finally there's of course aim and weapon selection, but that's again something that has alot to do with knowing where your enemy is. An amazing game and a shame it's almost dead.

It's called Vsync, but it adds input lag. One way to make the game as smooth as possible is to have more and more fps - think 300-500 fps. It makes the tearing (which Vsync removes) very unnoticeable. Another more modern way is to just get a Freesync/Gsync monitor. It does what Vsync does without adding input delay.

i remeber i cried after that terrible delusion. Never cried out of any sport result of a team i support ever. But to see evil finally win quake was a dream for me, and he played so well, the match was so intense, like the final chapter of quake live pro history, a true masterpiece. It was terrible to see him lose, but i must admit Rapha is just the best quake player ever.

I was so addicted to q3a i can feel that microcorrection strafejumping past a wall. This looks way too detailed I played in r_picmip 5 and modded my CRT driver INF to 125Hz to get the max strafejump height. Gosh what a finale.

This was absolutely incredible. I've been playing Quake 3 since 1999, and this is by far the best 1v1 I've ever seen. Really not the best win by Rapha though....

Cause this is incredibly hard to do. The skill gap. Overwatch, CoD, Fortnite there skill gaps are small as fuck and easy shooters. Especially compared to true arena FPS like UT and Quake, they're made for lowest common denominator masses, i.e. "casuals". Casuals were always going to ruin the FPS landscape. But at least I was a 90s kid and lived through the prime of greatness that was PC arena FPS. But yeah..... Shooters suck as today. But most things suck ass today. So... Oh well.

Those weren't the "new" graphics, those were special textures just for Intel sponsored tournaments. The original red look is still in the game and it's what everybody plays. Don't worry.

This game is confusing to watch, difficult to master, and extremely dated. But this is also, and will always be, the greatest competitive FPS. So ahead of it's time, it is unreal to look back at it now and watch it tower over its convoluted FPS competitors.
