Lost Souls always forget their current target after attacking once. The only reason they seem to "remember" you, the player, is if you've fired a shot to awaken all monsters in the associated sectors. Sectors retain this sound attribute forever after a weapon has been shot, so when a Lost Soul attacks you and misses, they're immediately woken up again by the sector telling them that the player has fired a weapon at some point in that sector. This is why Lost Souls don't make an alert sound when they see you and wake up. If they did, you'd hear them waking up after every single attack.

I think I like E2. Would need to play it again with a more critical eye. They are overly confusing with redundant areas but there's an interesting atmosphere. Unpopular opinion incoming: I like Sandy Peterson's maps quite a bit. Sure they can be ugly, but his maps tend to be a bit more non-linear and full of optional areas and gimmicks. Boy, do I love gimmicks. I do wonder what would happen if Sandy put out an "episode 6" of sorts where he actually had time to flesh (haha) out his maps, because basically all his maps are speed-maps due to the lack of time he had to complete them.

I think one of the reasons E2M2 is such an oddity is that it was one of the earliest maps built for the game. It was the map used in some of the earliest alpha builds ID shared with the public. The devs were still trying to figure out what DOOM was trying to be when the rough draft of that map was built.
@sammo50005 жыл бұрын

I think Tom Hall actually did add a lot of good things to the level design in regards to secrets, aesthetics and enemy design. I just don't like the mazes in his levels, which is weird since he also pushed for the coloured frames on doors to match keys, which seems like a no-brainer but is just crucial to know where you have to go. Something which can't be said for mazes where everything start to blend together. Really odd for the guy whose levels do tend to stand out visually. Peterson though... ugh. Inferno is my least favourite episode because it just becomes so tedious. There are moments of greatness, like Warrens. But even though the encore of E1M9's theme and the big twist of the levels is always enough to give you a new rush of adrenaline, by the time you get to Limbo, you're just so done with this episode, and the level itself does nothing to compromise with you. Few enemies, lots of damaging floors, confusing level design that blends together. When you get through it and then slay the Spider Mastermind in just one minute, you don't feel victorious, just fed up with the game. And because much of episode 3 was made by Peterson, yeah. I'm going to insist his were the least fun level designs. Certainly if you're marathon running. It's a good thing that they closed it out with Thy Flesh Consumed. There the final boss battle is the climax to a much more challenging level.

At 11:28 you say that Lost Souls don't count towards the kill count. I wanted to mention that they used to - well they're no different from any ordinary Doom1 monsters, why wouldn't they? It was Doom2 that removed the COUNTKILL flag from them due to the addition of Pain Elementals (because apparently tracking the current/total monster count dynamically on the map was too hard of a programming task or something; ironically, having Arch-Viles and Icon of Sin ruined this "fix" anyway). Specifically, the lost souls change was introduced in version 1.666, so I guess playing glboom-plus with -complevel 0 (which emulates doom v1.2; -complevel 1, 2, and 3 are doom v.1666, doom v1.9, and ultimate doom respectively) rather than -complevel 3 would be a tiny bit more vanilla. Well I'm sure you're aware of this all, just wanted to share some trivia.
@De-M-oN4 жыл бұрын
Another reason might be because if a Pain Elemental died close to a wall, lost souls could spawn out of map. In GZDoom they count as kills and the Pain Elementals are fixed to not spawn souls outside of map anymore.
@mresturk93364 жыл бұрын
Should have been as easy as having the spawned Lost Soul's COUNTKILL flag get disabled as part of the script when a Pain Elemental creates one.
@De-M-oN4 жыл бұрын
@@mresturk9336 If the Souls dont bug out of map anymore I dont see the reason to not count them for kills either. If they wouldnt count as kills in GZDoom I would change it myself that they do. Also I always disable the 20 Lost Souls limit.

The ironic part about things like Doom and goths and satanists using the inverted cross like that at the start of the first level as an anti-Christian symbol is that Catholicism considers it to actually be a holy symbol still. From Wikipedia: "The origin of the symbol comes from the Catholic tradition that Simon Peter was crucified upside down, as told by Origen of Alexandria. The tradition first appears in the 'Martyrdom of Peter', a fragmented text found in, but possibly predating, the apocryphal Acts of Peter, which was written no later than 200 A.D. It is believed that Peter requested this form of crucifixion as he felt he was unworthy to be crucified in the same manner that Jesus died. As such, some Catholics use this cross as a symbol of humility and unworthiness in comparison to Jesus. According to Roman Catholicism, the pope is Peter's successor as Bishop of Rome. Therefore, the Papacy is often represented by symbols that are also used to represent Peter, one example being the Keys of Heavenand another the Petrine Cross." For example, John Paul II on a chair bearing the cross: i.imgur.com/N8Grxrf.jpg
