It was an okay film, but my main problem with it is that Pinhead isn't an executor of divine punishment...he's there to show you pleasure and pain indivisible. He doesn't judge sin, as he indulges in it on a daily bases in his hedonism and sadomasochism.

darkbladetri I quite liked this one as at least it seemed partially credible. If you've ever seen Jacobs Ladder there are some interesting parallels with that. It is not a really a pinhead movie as such which in the light of the other direct to video series that followed is no bad thing. If they had maintained this standard throught the entire franchise there could have been some interesting incarnations.

If I'm not mistaken, I remember seeing a interview with Clive Barker regarding his Hellraiser story, and how he literally walked away from the characters since the movie studio went on to make the story about one character (Pinhead), instead of what it was actually about- the BOX. In fact, Pinhead wasn't intended to be the lead, as the cenobites were supposed to be guardians and gate keepers of the box. The female cenobite was as much a lead as Pinhead was intended to be, as well as Butterball and Chatterer. This movie, in my opinion, returned the story to where it was meant to be from the start, which is this- you open the box, the cenobites come and take you to your own personal 'hell'. The idea that the human mind cannot comprehend what is happening in that 'Dante's Inferno' may be interpreted as the world before opening the box, and in the case of the crooked Detective (while investigating a murder case), gets pulled into the 'hell' he created while he was alive, but you don't see that until the very end. I for one thought this was one of the BEST of the Hellraiser films made, because it focused on the person who opened the box, and the consequences of such actions, not just the cenobites (much less Pinhead).

To be honest, I found being trapped the way he was more hellish then a rapid death. His character solves puzzles and being in a physiological puzzle himself that he can't solve or get out of makes sense. If Pinhead killed him the story would just end and I personally prefer him stuck forever in his own unsolvable hell.

late reply but Pinhead got him just like he did with Frank in the first movie "we" from the protagonists perspective just don't realize this. At first! Remember in what kind of Hell Frank was trapped in during the second Movie? The movie is a callback to this.

I think what escapes a lot ppl about this movie is Joseph was already in hell. The child's finger at the crime scene was the first clue. This movie is about Joseph living in his own personal hell. Living the hell he created for himself by the life he lived. He was forced to face his own demons, and all the ppl he did wrong. Pinhead's dialogue towards the end of the movie explains that. Joseph was the one who didn't realize he was suffering, and being tormented in hell for the bad things he did until the very end. So much for him being a super genius.

I actually quite enjoyed this film a lot more than I thought I would. Whilst the nature of how the plot unfolds and Pinhead's involvement isn't really consistent with the rest of the series, I like that this film subverted the expectation to just have one random guy be brutally butchered by Cenobites, which we've seen for the last 4 films. Doing Inferno as a psychological thriller was actually a really neat and unexpected direction for the series, and one I quite enjoyed. The lead character is a douche but it's about him indulging his selfish desires and taboo lusts, which was a prominent theme in the original movie with Frank. It's basically what Hellraiser would have been had it been about Frank and not Kirsty.

It helped that this time PowerDirector didn't seem to screw up when it made the shadow file.. Editing HD clips, it creates a low quality duplicate to allow one to edit 10gb files on 8gb of RAM, but on longer files (like movies) they often get out of sync towards the end. Or at least, they appear that way in the editor. Unfortunately, that has lead to many choppy cuts in my reviews. :/

I think the biggest mystery of this film is why it's subtitled, "Inferno" Hellbound, they went to hell. Hell on Earth... Well, it's a stretch but I suppose there were cenobites on Earth doing "hellish" things. Bloodline, it follows the Merchant bloodline over a few centuries. Inferno... Is just a psychological horror mystery. It has nothing to do with fire.

Thanks for the solid review. I had watched it on DVD when it came out and it was interesting enough to avoid the fast forward button. The central theme of divine retribution was handled hella better in Lost Highway by the great David Lynch in 1997 while the level of violence evokes Alan Parkers Angel Heart (1987). Miramax went the cheap route when they could have contacted Clive Barker about adapting The Thief Of Always or another of his ip. Don't get me wrong the Hellbound Heart is dope but that just one of his stories available at the time and they tend to be very good (at least in my opinion).

Yeah, I'm not gonna lie. As much as this really REALLY doesn't feel like a Hellraiser movie at all, I actually quite like it for what it is: A supernatural psychological horror movie, with Pinhead and a couple of fairly well-designed new Cenobites thrown in for good measure. And personally, that climatic scene of Pinhead expositing about the moral and telling the detective why he's in this personal psychological hell, I actually find it pretty effective. A combination of the melancholy music, the detective's acting, and Pinhead's line (Especially the line "Your flesh is killing your spirit.") does make for a pretty good moment for the movie, and I dunno why but this particular 'kill' feels much more effective and hard-hitting to me than other kills in the Hellraiser franchise.
