I really don't understand why people say this movie is overly violent. Stallone wanted to portray the horrors that are happening in Burma. and he said in the commentary of the movie that the stuff you seen pales in comparison to what actually is happening there.

True Story. Our college did a special scholarship for Burmese immigrants. I was the person assigned to help them succeed on campus and stay out of trouble. A ton of them were Karen and told me about being chased out of their farming villages at rifle point or getting shot at on their way out. One was in a forced labor camp for a long time before he got away (he was essentially a slave). We had a movie night and a scene about a house fire actually lead several of them to leave the room in a panic because it reminded them of their homes being burned down by the government. The Burmese government is pretty freaking cruel. The Burmese students were always really cool though. They appreciated their lives here a lot more than most.

Rambo was actually my favorite of the series. It showed the unfiltered reality of war, plus it helped shine light of the real civil war and genocide that was occurring in Burma at that time. Another really good and dark war film that came out around the same time was Tears Of The Sun. Anyone who enjoyed this film will enjoy it too.
@radkonpsygami76348 жыл бұрын
Go figure, now Burma (or Myanmar) is one of the fastest economically growing countries. The idea of Rambo helping Christian missionaries in the movie was half interesting yet half untrue considering that in reality the rebels fighting Khmer Rouge were primarily Buddhists (not Christians), but it is true that Christianity is very rare in Myanmar. Perhaps Sylvester Stallone (who seemed to show favoritism toward Buddhist faith in previous Rambo movies) wanted to bring attention to war in Burma with this movies and the only way to do it with an American audience was to turn Christian missionaries into some of the central characters in the movie. The atrocities pictured in the movie and some of the bad guy characters were based off accounts he got from villagers living in Burma. Supposedly the actor who played the brutal leader of the military outpost was inspired by an actual brutal military leader whom he personally witnessed commit atrocities.

"Rambo," for all it's flaws and basic unwatchable-ness, contains one scene toward the end that I'll never forget. Julie Benz's "Sarah" and the missionaries have just been saved by Rambo. Rambo is standing on a hill above her, looking down as she looks up, and she begins to weep. Rambo's face has the barest expression of regret, almost as if he's saying "I'm sorry." This, I believe, means something. And what I think it means is this: 1985's "First Blood" was fun, and the body count impressive but bloodless. It was fun to watch, and not disturbing in the least. "Rambo" is the opposite, depicting gore, rape, up-close and graphic dismemberment, and yes- footage of actual dead bodies. "Sarah" represents 1985, and the longing for a simpler time, before 9/11 and before that loss of innocence. "Rambo" is 2014 saying "I'm sorry, but we can't go back. I'm sorry." I think it's pretty powerful when you think about it like that, and even if Stallone didn't mean for that scene to contain that message, to me, it does regardless.

Hmm, you give it 2/5 yet you admit that the movie perfectly did achieve what it aimed for. Yeah, the plot of the movie alone deserve 2/5 starts but in a movie like that, plot is a secondary thing. It's aim was to show the horror of war and it did achieve that perfectly. Plus, I really love the way Rambo is portrayed here more like a tactician, rather than an invincible superhero that just runs around in the open being fired at by 100's of soldiers and not being hit. It is a great nod to the first movie and the novel on which it was based.

Just a slight correction on the sniper rifle's power bit. The Barrett M107 is a .50 caliber, shoulder fired, semi-automatic sniper rifle. The rifle is said to have manageable recoil for a weapon of its size owing to the barrel assembly that itself absorbs force, moving inward toward the receiver against large springs with every shot. Additionally the weapon's weight and large muzzle brake also assist in recoil reduction. Alongside a Recoil pad located at the butt of the weapon. Then there is the Barrett XM109, which fires 25 mm rounds. There are various ways to get around recoil. The bodies should have fallen somewhat forward though, they were still pretty off with that. ;)
@DraccoKnightblade7 жыл бұрын
though body parts being disintegrated by the rounds coming from that rifle, that was indeed accurate. Ever see a watermellon getting splattered by a .50? A headshot is -just- like that. Little hole in the front of a chest wound, and...goodbye most of your chest cavity otherwise. Legs and arms would just detach, etc... (Sigh) It's THAT argument again. Saying that it isn't dark because it's 'overplayed' doesn't actually mean it isn't. When someone is saying it isn't a dark universe, that is IMMEDIATLY the response they go for. So at least TRY to be original. In fact, I find that argument to be downright laughable. Merely saying it isn't dark because it overplays it doesn't mean much, and your probably one of those people who views it as bad because of how dark it is. If you think the 40k universe is bad, go and read the Horus Heresy novels, and I DARE YOU to tell me that they are bad. So basically, from my point of view, there isn't 'overplaying the dark factor' doesn't mean anything if you can make a great and expansive, with good characters and a wonderful storyline.

I've got to be honest, I sincerely place this film as equal to First Blood as Rambo movies go, with First Blood Pt 2 in second place. (I really don't rate Rambo3 all that highly in regards to its predecessors, but it is still an entertaining action movie.) After kicking the USSR in the balls in Afghanistan, Rambo went to the closest place he could call home - The jungles of south east Asia. Like in the first film he's still haunted by the things he did and saw in Vietnam, and by his experiences when he tried going home to the US. Throwing his knife into the boat he set fire to was more symbolic of him trying to throw that part of his life away. Of course when what he predicted would happen did in fact happen, he had to take that part back and forged a new blade, which is one of the critical points of the film in my opinion. The second most critical point for the film is in two parts, first with the earlier dialogue with Benz's character "When you're pushed, killing's as easy as breathing", and the second part near the end when the pious fart bashes another man's brains in with a rock - he was pushed, and killed as easily as he breaths. What really makes this film equal to the first, is that they're not glamourisations of war or of soldiers who have actually fought and seen/done terrible things we ourselves would like to think we couldn't do. In fact, showing it in such disgusting visceral detail should be done more often - Shock people into remembering that the consequences of war reach far beyond war itself, and for an exponentially longer time. As the popular line of narration from the Fallout games goes, "War never changes", but the exposure to and methods of warfare do. Despite disagreeing with you on many points, still an enjoyable review! Really enjoyed the Tremors film series reviews too.

W.T.F Stallone is seen making a new propeller for his boat not a knife, I believe he does this twice in the film

He also makes himself a machete

Question Weird Al how much did you pay for this movie?

My parents bought me this movie when I was like 10 or 11 because they just saw the name and thought it was the first one. Unfortunately I watched it alone the first time. Ever since then... horror movies dont scare me as much

I enjoyed the movie overall, but what really annoyed me were the humanitarians. Ok you wanna help people, that's great, but don't be fucking stupid. They were so convinced by their own moral BS that it made it all the more satisfying when reality hit them. I really didn't feel sorry for them, they should have just listened to Rambo.

I felt sorry for them because of how stupid they were Sort of a “you poor foolish souls” type of deal

I think that the starting scene with real life footage of the situation in Burma, is powerful, and propels the movie forward, so you are violently thrown from your "yeah shootin' and explosions" fun into a movie about how awful war is properly, it is really well realized.

Rambo was the last good Stallone action movie. Don't get me started with The Expendables series.

Idk if anyone has pointed this out yet, but I think the scene where the “killing is wrong” guy kills the soldier with the rock is supposed to be similar to the story of Kane and Able, no clue for sure just thought if it
