Good sense Rachel. I'm getting to know my present self and my drastically changing capabilities and energy levels. This is making it so much easier to pass on the stuff my fantasy self has filled the house with and create the home that I can manage and can be happy and safe in. I feel no guilt because I have cared for stuff well and someone else will be glad to have it. It feels good to bless others. Thanks for the great tips.... I will wait to organise until I have the decluttering done first. My brother William has offered to help me and says when I'm happy with what I have he will decorate and help me put things where I want them. How can I pass up an offer like that! Love vera in Northern Ireland

You know, I always thought I was just a lazy slob, until I found your channel. Procrastinator for sure, but now I realize I’m overwhelmed & trying to avoid the stress of making better choices, etc. 🤪 Thank you, thank you, thank you for helping me to make it “stupid easy”. I’m getting there… 💕

Like you, I have a small kitchen. This was really helpful. Thank you for not showing me your linen closet. I don't have a linen closet. As a child I had no responsibility except tp take care of my mothers feelings. My mother would become almost hysterical when we would try to get rid of anything; things like getting rid of the newspapers she hadn't read under the sofa. (It was a Depression era trauma thing) Your videos are very nurturing even for me at 73. I think I can do this.

6:33 🤯 You just totally blew my mind!! This has been my block to decluttering...we have all the extra bits & bobs "just in case" that thingy breaks. I know exactly where they all are in my mind. BUT, I never thought of this as mental clutter. This is a complete game changer for me!!🎉❤😊🌻🌟

Rachel, I haven’t been here for a while and thought I was doing well… Your new look caught my eye - you look stunning! - and so I wanted a peak and stayed till the end 😁 What a brilliant sum-up, reminder, motivation! I now realise I have slipped - in action and in mind-set - and am totally motivated to take up the reins I hadn’t even realised I’d let loose. Seeing your beautiful space was also a motivator. Thank you for it all. Thank you for you🙏🏻🧡

You have such a gift of addressing the nuances of the emotions we experience when decluttering, and then contrasting those feelings with the logic and reality of our spaces and true needs. No one does this better than you! ❤

I see that I have to make a choice between being always prepared and an easy to maintain living space. Thank you for making this crystal clear! I decluttered greatly and my house was SO easy to clean, then I slowly but surely filled it up again, and housekeeping began to be a big chore again. Time to re-declutter. It will be easier this time. Thanks for your encouraging video.

I appreciate so much how you articulate the mental and emotional traps that stall or prevent altogether decluttering process. I hadn't heard the term "deowning" before, and that concept appeals to me as a kind of mental gateway to making a life in which LESS is actually MORE....serenity.

Thank you for this video and all your work! Something that came to my mind in watching this is that our lives are like a really long trip. What I mean is that when we go on a trip, we have an idea of what activities we’ll be doing as we bring the stuff we need for that stuff and that amount of time. At home, we can accidentally fall into the mindset that we don’t need to be making these decisions, but we do! We need to think of it as a “5-10+ year trip” and not have so much in our home that it ruins the trip! There’s something about going on a trip that makes most of us feel good, right? Maybe part of it is being away from our cluttered homes! The concepts are sinking in and the habits are growing. Thank you!

Actually, when going away a couple of times this summer, I really noticed where my ability to be more intentional / decisive about what to bring was majorly improved over “old me”. This was improved by my less cluttered spaces, especially in the clothing department! Where I still managed to have clutter was with “just in case activities” like bringing along a bit too many pencils, activity books, etc. But even those things were WAY less voluminous than on similar trips a few years ago.

Your "Stupid Easy" criteria has helped me so much! My goal is to make things in our house easy enough to maintain that my youngest boys (8 & 10 yrs) and my husband can do it. Notice that I said CAN, not that they DO. I know we still have too much in an area when my husband and kids keep asking "where is the thingymajiger?"

Thank you for this video. I just moved and thought I got rid of a lot (half my stuff) from my move last year but moving this time made me feel so disorganized and still have way too much stuff. I like how simply you put it. I want a clean organized home. I never liked taking pictures on my home either. I'm so appreciative of the push to get rid of more from your video.😊

I have been decluttering my apartment and storage for a few years now. I sell a portion of things on ebay- boy do I feel a sting when selling some items but after going through it a few times I tell myself its not too bad. Having a clutter free environment is better than those bad feelings.

Here’s how I handle the things I’m not sure about: Put them in a box in the basement. When the box is full, write a date on the box 1 year in the future, tape it up and put it in the garage. When the date comes up a year later, donate or throw out that box without even opening it. The theory behind it…if I didn’t need that stuff for a year, I don’t need it at all. But within the year, I can always retrieve something out of the box if I need to. I almost never do take anything out of the box and when the date comes up I don’t even remember what’s in there and hence no anxiety to throw it out. This is a method I heard from someone else, and it’s worked great for me.

I try to keep things together that go together. So if I was roasting a turkey I would keep the oven proof thermometer with the pan. So organize things according to usage. I have my extras kept away out of the routinely used things. I have limited space to store those things so have a built in limitation. One way to determine if you routinely use things is to remove all of an item from where you are planning to keep those things. Then give yourself a limited amount of time, say 3 months for kitchen tools. Put all those items in another space, in a bin or however you want to keep them during this 3 month period. As you go about your life, retrieve what you need, use it, wash it and add it to the storage space. Be honest, hold yourself accountable. Don't put back the 3 colander set if you are only using one. Another thing that helped was to make a value judgement. I decided that I like zero waste and want to limit the amount of plastic in the home. So as the plastic broke/became dysfunctional, I sought out replacements (often in glass sometimes in stainless steel). I know this won't work for folks who have dexterity issues but I didn't at the time. Buying those replacements was often a hunt through the thrift stores or I went without as I could not afford the prices for new. Making do/doing without is one of the ladders of zero waste. So now I have tools that are durable, long lasting and will never need replacing (unless they disappear). This worked too. However you go about it, I encourage folks of all ages to seriously consider your impact on the planet and commerce. Disposables are staying on the planet in some form forever. Do you want to contribute to that?
