Many people begin thinking about decluttering and organization in January, but it’s such a good idea to begin simplifying your home leading up to Christmas. Creating a more peaceful home environment can help you and your family enjoy this busy season more, and it helps prepare your home for an influx of new clutter after Christmas! Shannon of Home Made Lovely joins me in this episode to talk about her new book, The Clutter Fix. In this episode, we cover:

The toy "is only useful if it keeps the kids entertained for longer than it takes to clean it up." Genius! I have never thought of that perspective, but it makes so much sense.

Best idea ever to keep a “clutter bin” with a trash bag in it! I actually have this already in my closet, by chance, and now it will serve a great purpose!

When my children were still at home, I kept a small, round laundry basket for toys that were just left around and would put it on the top shelf of the coat closet. If a toy was being seeked, I would go to the basket and see if it was there, and if it was, it was given to the toy seeker with a hint that if I had to look for it again and found it, the toy would go bye bye and if they don’t want it to leave the house they needed to show the value of it by keeping it put away when no longer being played with; if a toy was still in the basket 2weeks to a month later, it was cleaned and donated to a local shelter. As they grew to teen age, I still used the basket method for toys, clothes, etc, by then, the kids knew to look in it and also knew that every two weeks, it was emptied and brought to the local shelter, so they had learned by then to keep things valuable to them in their rooms and put away. I still have the basket method as my husband sees a flat surface and drops things on it instead of putting it back where it belongs (such a long generational theme for all of us), when he asks if I used something, I direct him to the basket and just say I found it on our dresser or the kitchen counter or an end table and have no idea how it got there 😅. I have issues with the paper dragon- I just look at the desk and that dragon roars at me and throws flames- so I ignore it and finally pull up my big girl panties and slay that dragon until it resurrects itself! 🤪 I have found I do not live or think well with clutter anywhere, so every time I clean, I look at something and ask “has this been used in the past month?” and if it hasn’t then it goes to the local shelter or the shelter supported thrift store no matter how much I paid for it. I am not a minimalism purist but I just don’t like clutter and stuff all over the place- except that paper dragon, she keeps coming back and taunts me on the regular!

940am.. Too many good things that I barely use, but hard to let go. So, I just keep relocating them but never achieve extra uncluttered space.

Just look at it like laundry, or dishes… it’s just an every day thing that can pile up if it’s not a priority.

Hey Lisa and Shannon. I'm subbed to this channel, but Shannon, I believe I went to church with you many years back. Caruthers Creek maybe? I last saw you at Michael's craft store when I was working there as a framer. I didn't know you had a channel. I'll definitely be a subscriber :) I really enjoyed this chat!
