I wonder if Marie Kondo had any idea how much stuff Americans hoard when she suggested that all things had to be pulled out of a space and gone through piece by piece. Good job on the garage!
@giap99137 жыл бұрын
I agree. Personally, I have to categorize & organize BEFORE I can decide what to keep & what to purge. For example, it works much better for me to open each kitchen cabinet & drawer & decide which items from each need to go, and I can do that very quickly and efficiently. However, I think part of the Marie Kondo method of pulling everything out is the impact of seeing just how much stuff one has might encourage the purging of even more items.

My rule is if I don't use it, touch it, or wear it once in 365 days it's history. I also do the one thing in one thing out rule that seems to work for me too. Even doing the above I'm amazed at how much stuff I still have -- organized stuff, but stuff none the less.
@golightly51217 жыл бұрын
Having a lot of stuff steals from us. It keeps us occupied with caring for it, arranging it, organizing it, dusting it, moving it from here to there, it depresses our mood when looking at it, and it buries our favorite things and making those unusable. Less is really more! More time to spend with friends and family, more time to spend on meaningful pursuits, more time enjoying life. Keep up the good work!

It's so very encouraging to see the things you struggle with, and overcome. It give me hope. So far, I've done the kitchen, sitting room, bathroom, laundry and bedroom. On Monday I start in the dinging room. This room has been been used as a dumping ground for a number of years. It needs work. If you can do your garage, I can do my dining room.

You are doing great! I don't know if I've shared this in the past but my hubby and I moved about 2 years ago. We had an 1850 sq ft house with a basement just as big. When we moved we took only what would fit in our minivan and a tow behind open trailer (that mostly held my husband's motorcycle which was sold). We sold or gave away the rest. It felt amazing. I'm totally relating to what you said about everything just disappearing. Of course we had no kid's, no pets and my husband has no family so we didn't have many emotional ties. We now purge regularly.

I kinda like the videos where the progress might feel sluggish and frustrating. It's a big ol' struggle in real life, and your gradual update videos portray that well. (Not that I'd mind one video where two weeks of progress was shortened into one segment, but I definitely enjoy the slow ones where you talk about all the bits and pieces as you go.) (Also? Whenever you say you "didn't get much done" my jaw drops. As someone who's been more-or-less bed-ridden for the last 7+ years due to celiac disease and a bunch of other health problems (I'm 23 years old, for the record), I began my Konmari journey in January 2016, working only in my bedroom, and now in May 2017 I'm only half done. What you do in three hours is three months of work for me. So congrats, even your most minor efforts really impress me. Plus your videos are soothing and fun~) (P.S. I meant to comment before-- that mustard-coloured bag you got? I got really excited when I saw that because it suits you SO WELL. I think I actually whispered "yesss" because it was YOUR bag and it looked absolutely perfect for you.)

Honestly if this was a 10 part series I would be happy because you show us real life and it shows the perfectionist in me that has been decluttering my flat for over a year that progress is slow, steady but ever lasting and it's about the lessons you learn while doing it that matter most.

Rachel Phelps - lol yep there was a fire near us not too long ago and both of us pretty much said the same thing... Just like "I know this sounds horrible and stupid buuuutttt wouldn't be too sad if the fire hit us and it all just went away" of course obviously we don't REALLY want that to happen because there are items that I truly treasure but oh lordy it's overwhelming. Most importantly though it's going through the whole process that helps prevent you from getting to that point again. Ugh.

My friend got her first home with her partner and it is beautifully minimal. It makes me so motivated to get my space to where it needs to be. I have to remind myself she moved from one room at her parents to a flat and I have lived in houses, flats independent of family for 7 years. I tell her be a good gatekeeper because collecting stuff is so easily missed. My mums garage of the home she lived in for 20 yrs was very similar to this.
@labradorite82565 жыл бұрын
What I think about is what if there was a disaster, what items would I really miss, or grab if there was time. I was living in a friends spare room for a while, everything was in storage, and whilst it was a bit like Xmas when I finally unpacked it, I actually missed very little of it.

Being older let me take a stab at how one accumulates stuff. In the beginning you buy stuff to set up your nest, if you struggle financially you keep it basic, but when your earnings go up all of a sudden you need a pasta making machine, that must have Kitchen Aid stand mixer, and those Christmas dishes because you've become the hostess of all family gatherings. Since you host so many gatherings you need large bowls, serving trays, a mess of large serving spoons, a 10-cup coffee maker, and those darn wine glasses you still have collecting dust on the top shelf of your cabinet. Then someone dies and you're the one responsible for empting their house and getting rid of their belongings and you hold dear the red crank style hand mixer your mom got with Green Stamps she collected so diligently on grocery day, and the Lazy Susan relish dish too, and the waffle iron your sister got your mom with her first paycheck, see where this is going. It just keeps happening over and over and in 40 years you got yourself a LOT of stuff. Multiply your husband's stuff, your kid's stuff, and golly darn if you live in the same house for over 25 years you just keep making room for more stuff. It's called life.
@meissoun7 жыл бұрын
This reminds me of our attempt to declutter a huge basement in a Summer house that has been owned by my boyfriend 's family for about 70 years . It's on a small island, so getting rid of stuff means you have to load it on a boat - or hey, we could just put it down in the basement and deal with it later! Like 50 years later... We found at least 3 broken lawn mowers, several old TVs and soooo much more crap and old furniture! There are about 6 rooms and we will work on this for probably two more years. But the motivation is that once these rooms are empty we can actually use them!

Omg. The natural disaster fantasy!! So, this actually happened to me a few years ago. We came back from a trip to a flooded basement. It was a huge pain to clean it out because my husband had to immediately leave town for a job. My mother in law kept our kids a few extra days. I spent all day for 3 days cleaning it out and had one of those big green plastic bag/mini dumpster type things. It was so great because the flood ruined a ton of crap but somehow didn't touch our wedding items. What a great feeling. So, I relate.

Yes, I agree. With the mess that garages can be, and are, you have to take things off the shelf one at a time. Yes, the whole "joy check" still applies, but hauling it all out into a space... I think the garage is already the space it's been hauled into. Hey, Rachel, I admire you so much. You have a three year old (as of this video, anyway), and you still manage to get so much stuff done. I stopped my tidying marathon because I thought that my almost two year old would make it impossible. Eh, wrong! I'm gonna give it another go, thanks to your inspiration! I am also very guilt of keeping things that I feel can be transformed, different locations, fixed, or saved in some way. They just become an extra project to my never ending list of things to do. By removing them out of my life, I feel so much lighter and less weighted down by it all. Donating the items just takes them away fast and at the same time you get some joy by feeling your items will be loved by someone else. I had a similar problem with my mother and her boyfriend, who served time in the military. He had a bunch of friends who passed away. Being that, he also accumulated a lot of memorabilia from his fallen comrades. I suggested that he clean the place once, but gave me a look that I won’t forget. Shortly thereafter, during a small stint at a reunion for fallen soldiers, I called for the services of Jux Los Angeles, a garage and attic cleaning / reorganization company, based in southern a California. My mother’s boyfriend wasn’t pleased with what I had done at first. As a week passed by since the renovation, much to his chagrin, he had to tell me that the place looked so different and that now, he has a place where he can honor his brothers and sisters; in his garage ( I made it extra special and hung up some uniforms his comrades wore on the garage walls…)

I want to only keep stuff that bring me joy and things that I actually use. My parents always kept everything thinking they would maybe use it one day so the house I grew up in was filled with stuff. There were stuff on the floors because there were'nt any space anywhere else. My mom and my little sister were hoarders, when i was a baby child (5 or so) our house got flooded by an actual flood. All of our stuff got damaged and most we had to get rid of. We only got to keep a few (a baby book of my older sister and 10 other pictures) of our things. We all made it out alive and stuff BUT our mom's hoarding (she got from her mom) got worse. Now because of our mom passing, my little sister's and my older sister's hoarding has gotten a lot worse, whereas my twin sister and i who really never took to hoarding have gone through multiple declutterings to the point that we almost have nothing. Life events really mess with you mentally and when you're a hoarder you feel as though it took everything and you have to keep adding to your collection or you won't be able to get it back even though you feel like you'll never be able to fully get it back. Whereas the minimilists feel like getting rid of stuff, even if it is valuable (I got rid of awards, drawings, photographs, and case files i earned throughout school, college and work that my mom had kept) isn't enough. To end my blabbering natural disasters, or disasters of any sort, could do way more harm than good. BUT i did understand what you meant to say and why you said it because the process of starting anew with nothing does seem far less constricting than having too much and too little time to deal with it. It takes a lot of strength on your part to deal with your surroundings the way you are and to show it to us and to explain how it's affecting you. Most people with a hoarding problem can't even do that. So props to you :) You may not feel like what you're doing is amazing, like it's just cleaning and sorting, but it's actually helping a lot of people mentally deal with change themselves (including myself) so thank you :) (sorry for the long ramble, i just kinda wanted to explain some stuffs :D )

I'm just astonished at all the stuff you have! All the furniture esp blows my mind

When you mentioned how you cauterize items that you keep , that really helped me with my journey to declutter more :) If it doesn't have a home or real purpose it gets tossed , or donated . When I started a year ago I still have stuff left I couldn't sell ( taken up space ) - It will be gone !!!

I watch this over and over again to help me get inspired, its so hard to get started and stay inspired when neighbors drive by looking... gggrrrr... BUT I need to do this and have a yard sale and make $$ THEN I can FINALLY get my workshop set up to do things I enjoy..... it will be soooo worth it when completed!

I still think you did an amazing job. I have a one car garage that I've never parked in because we offered the space to a family member who couldn't afford paying for a storage unit. Was so happy to see it all emptied out last year!

How is this video already from 2 years ago? I'm re-watching and am shocked it's already been so long since I first watched it!

Ahhhhh! Don't even say in jest that u want a disaster to take your stuff away! Plus I love how your are "taking inventory" in other ways....and growing. That's what I try & do, at least part of the time, when I purge things. So while it's time & energy consuming, good for you for going through your items.

I cleaned out my garage today! It only took a couple of hours, but I'd been putting it off. Thanks for the motivation!

I have to say you really made me laugh today. I really needed it. I have been binge watching your journey. I am an Army Veteran and I have seen many things in this world and have been many places. I appreciate your realness. It is refreshing. I thought I was gonna fall on the floor and choke on my Turkey day left overs when you said you almost wish a natural disaster would essentially make it disappear. Spoken like a person who is just sick of the overwhelmingness of stuff in your life that seems to get constantly shuffled, but nothing ever goes anywhere. I like to call it " shit-shifting". I appreciate when you find the humor in situations. It is how we make it through everyday life. NOW that I have recovered and made a comment I am gonna continue your journey..... lol

haha, I'm glad I could give you a laugh :) And 'shit-shifting' is absolutely perfect. YES.

Its so funny to me how many things you hold up i either have had, would collect, or have now, (there or some things i even think when you hold it up "ooh thats nice i would like to have that! then remember oh yeah, supposed to be being minimal!")I think not only do we have some of the same tastes, as in W.o.w., D&D, video games, etc, but we tend to collect the same things to excess as well, and usually for the same reasons, picture frames, purses, things I intend to fix or redo and never get around to....Never apologize for an uneventful vlog, this is your world and we are just your guests in it, and you are not here to entertain us, so much as you are giving us the privilege of joining you on your journey and learning from your experience with you, for which i for one am greatful, tho that being said, I am very much entertained ! :)

We made two hundred this weekend on clutter. We packed up what did not sell and it will be donated and gifted Monday. He is the clutter person but we are making progress with him!

Dont apologise for this video, It's so nice to see your honesty and realness, it's so much more inspiring than you think, much more relatable than the perfect staged decluttering videos. :D Keep going in your own pace and don't push it, you are doing an awesome job going through all that stuff, both physically and mentally.
@MessyMinimalist7 жыл бұрын
Thank you :) I appreciate that. As more people watch, I start to feel like there are expectations for some big reveal. But it's just me... and sometimes the 'big reveal' is more mental :) take care!

Just had a thought - you could fill the glass head hat rack with your collection of beach glass unless you like to pick up and handle the beach glass pieces from time to time) - could look kind of cool, plus storage and use in one ;)

your hubby with that turtle @9:12 !!! omg made me laugh so hard !!!!
@keyisme13567 жыл бұрын
good progress! you're doing well with discovering your feelings and letting things go. I'd love to see that face/ hat rack find a permanent home. my only suggestion is to decide what shelves are holding what - garden stuff, tools, seasonal decorations, projects that need attention, etc. start clearing the first shelf, and put only those things on it which you intend as its permanent home.

Good advice :) I need to get back in there and make some of those decisions!

Hi Rachel! I am a new subscriber and have been binge watching your channel while I de-clutter my craft room. I am already pretty minimalist and have a very low clutter tolerance but I adore your videos and am watching these to learn from you on the mindset of letting things go. This video made me laugh so hard around 9:12 when your hubby video-bombed you with Mr. Turtle. Not sure if anyone else noticed but he was making me laugh so hard! Good job on your de-cluttering and thanks for filming! Hope to see a lot more videos in the future!

Hey there! Thanks for subscribing, I'm glad you're enjoying my videos! And I'll have to tell my hubby what a hit he has been! I had no idea of any of that going on in the background until I was editing and saw the footage! lol, he's a goofball. ;-)

your doing a great job! im sure youll look back on your hoarding times and laugh lifes learning curb! i live in a uk house quite small compated to us standards. but ive been decluttering seriously for about a yr! and i love how big it makes our space and plus selling furniture has given us a few extra quid! and cleaning is so much quicker. my hubby has caught the bug lol hes sortin his garage. i love watching your progress and everything you say rings true because youve experienced it!! looking forward to your clear organized garage xx

I'm a big "I might use it one day" kinda person and I've also got to the stage where I wouldn't be sad if a natural disaster did my decluttering for me so you are an inspiration to me. Don't think your videos are boring because decluttering is messy and time consuming and there's nothing you can do to glam it up. Your videos are positive, inspiring and entertaining so don't stop now cos you've still got a long way to go and so do I.
