My dad was a hoarder. And my childhood friend's parents were hoarders. No matter where I was as a child it was in a horded environment. I am now a home owner and I am realizing that I don't need so much stuff. I have held on to things I seriously don't need due to life trama...which is exactly what my parents did. I am definitely NOT in hoarding territory, but my spaces definitely aren't as intentional as I need them to be. I don't know if I can be a minimalist, but I can strive to be clean and put together.

Impressive progress. It's my belief that it's easier to make progress on a decluttering project when you have a specific goal for the space. Not just "make it less full or less messy," but more like "turn the room into a den" or ""delete 50% of the contents before moving and downsizing." Because that makes it easier to tell whether you're achieving your goal and gives you an incentive to keep going. Regarding decision fatigue, one way to help prevent it is to make some decisions ahead of time. For example, "when I clean out the garage, if I find tools, I will keep one of each type and discard duplicates." Or, "I will only keep gardening decorations if they are shaped like butterflies and in excellent condition." The more decisions you can pre-make, the easier to just execute your plan, rather than having to weigh and consider each item.

I started watching you about three weeks ago and I’m hooked. I’ve started on my room, a few drawers at a time a bookshelf at a time. I am not stressing myself out about it and I’m just working at a pace that suits me. But you’ve really inspired me. I’m 58 years old, taking care of my elderly mother, and also sharing the home with my brother’s family, all seven of them. I am on a mission to do what I can for myself and for my mom. And I think my brother is starting to also feel the need to make some changes. He’s working on the garage which is primarily his stuff. And I’m hoping as time goes on the rest of the family will follow. It’s a struggle with littles that have dealt with family trauma to let go of their “stuff”. Hoarder mentality kicks in when there has been an insecure family dynamic from birth. Thank God that things are coming around in that situation. So onward I go and thank you so much for your sunny and real videos. May God bless you and your lovely family 😊💖👍🙏
@brendamontanye98775 жыл бұрын
early on in this video you said, "cluttered decisions". That's the space I am in now. Pretty much every thing I touch, in my "too much", requires a decision. So many decisions. So many muddled decisions, not clear cut yes or no, then carrying out the decision is it's own muddle. At the end of the day, I wish that my step counter counted decisions.
@amara5605 жыл бұрын
That would be such an interesting idea to use your podometer that way! It would make you really think
@zabm35025 жыл бұрын
When I can't make decisions but need to get stuff done I find sorting things into like piles useful. Putting all my tools together, actual garbage, any recycling, papers to deal with later or any categories that fit your space. Sometimes decisions become clear and sometimes they don't and both are ok. Take a break and it'll be easier next time you tackle it because you'll know what you have.
@inspiteofbecauseof47455 жыл бұрын
Decision fatigue is a real thing. Take breaks and put the I don’t knows in their own category and find one thing you can make decision about and keep going. Take a before and after picture of your progress even after 20 minutes.
@brendamontanye98775 жыл бұрын
@@inspiteofbecauseof4745 This is great :) I actually did some of this today. We had a boiler go down at Christmas and it ended up that we had frozen pipes and then big puddles in rooms. One room was the office. I took everything that was in the way out and put it on my kitchen table. I have been going after that mess for more than a month. I am down to one big box. I don't do it full time because I value my mental health, ha. Some of the stuff gets burned in the cookstove which is fun. Some gets put away. And some is found treasure! What is left is mostly "I don't knows" but often I solve it when I am doing other things. Every day I gain a big more of my large table back again.

I bet that was satisfying. I took a week off work last summer & cleaned out 12 years of clutter from our attic. When we moved in we just dumped the contents of 2 teenagers bedrooms up there & carried on buying stuff to fill our new house. Added to that was 10 years worth of our own child’s no longer needed belongings. Now it only contains Christmas, suitcases and few sentimental items. Felt amazing and it should have been done long before. Although no matter how much I dejunk from the rest of our home, it still feels full. So I will often do your 10 item declutter. Thanks for making the videos

Regarding recycling and decision fatigue - I’m not proud of myself - a couple of times I lost it and just emptied stuff into the waste bin, not bothering to check what was in the box and whether I could sell or recycle or donate, it’s just you sometimes get to that stage where you think “oh I can’t be bothered, I’m just fed up”. Thankfully we learn to take a step back and leave it for another day. It happens, we’re not bad people. Love your new den!!

I FEEL YOU. 100%. (I actually did a video about this, calling it a 'rage purge'). Even then, I didn't fully emphasize the shameful parts of just throwing stuff away, but I do believe that sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Just like you said, I'm not proud either! But honestly, for my mental health, there were days I JUST. NEEDED. IT. GONE. ...Good luck to you! :)

A little late to the party, but I’m here! The comment that got to me the most was your description of decision fatigue and how delaying decisions is procrastination. I’ve always thought of myself as a procrastinator and it has such a negative connotation to it. It always beat me down. But when you think of it as “I’m delaying making a decision” or “don’t delay this decision” then it doesn’t feel so heavy on the heart. I have resentment for following the KonMari method. I let go of a lot of things because at the time it didn't bring me "joy" and now I regret it because those things I need now! I let my logic be silenced by my feelings at the time, my instincts were telling me I shouldn't be guided by a gimmick. Maybe I was looking for an outside source to be the guide on the decisions I was fatigued about, I don't know. I've learned though, it is best to purge when your brain is most energetic and to be creative when you brain is most tired, a tired brain has less inhibition. You quantify the journey in the most relatable way for me, thank you for all the motivation you give me!

Not sure what is different about your look in the opening shot, but you looked so fresh and happy! I remember when you first started your garage, I felt depressed for your task ahead, but WOW! Kudos to you for realizing your dream space

Thanks for saying so! :) And yes... we've come a LONG way! Yikes, I'm a little scared to look back at old videos!

Amazing transformation! Having a goal of how you want the space to be used is so motivating. I love what you said about growing your own grass the best you can rather than focussing on the grass on the other side. Enjoy the journey. 😁👍

Your persistence with your garage is truly inspiring. The message of continuing forward, no matter what the pace, is something I need to be reminded of regularly. And happy silly songs! I also need those regularly~ Cheering you on!
