When we moved 2 and a half years ago, I got rid of a lot, but a lot more unnecessary stuff moved with us. I'm a "what if" kind of person. I'd ask "what if we had a party and I needed those platters, glasses, mugs, random kitchen item" so we implemented the black dot system. If it was not something I'd used often I put a black dot on it. I'd remove the dot if we used it. Several items have been used since and are now in a more frequent rotation. Many other items are sitting at the top of the cupboard out of reach. This reminds me to take them to a donation spot.

My understanding of a 'packing party' is when you physically remove items from one room (or a whole house) and over a given space of time gradually bring back the items you want/need. This isn't the same as boxing things up and donating them, although that's very good! I've taken down the cooking utensils from a wire mesh hanger in the kitchen and have stored them in the walk-in pantry. As I need/want an item I retrieve it. At the end of the month, I'll look at the things we haven't retrieved and most likely get rid of them.
@MessyMinimalist7 жыл бұрын
Your understanding is right (or at least that's what I learned as well). I took a very extreme deviation, by convincing myself that I was just packing things (or moving them) to storage, but instead I just got them OUT. :) But you're right. :)

I would use the tote bags for groceries! That cuts back on your plastic bags that come into your house that clutter up ! Leave them in your car and you'll never forget them or by the door!

I find inspiration from your videos. I have very little energy left after work, so I just end up on the couch reading or watching TV. All the while the stuff I have just sits there and makes me feel bad. I started getting rid of stuff a while back and it's going slowly. You give me hope and inspiration.
@MessyMinimalist7 жыл бұрын
I'm glad. :) And I understand about feeling so pooped a lot of them time - that can be hard to overcome. Sometimes, I just have to let a day be a bust (lay around, veg out), but then wake up the next day with a game plan. I find I'm way more motivated and (even find energy) when it's planned. Good luck!!
@AceVonS7 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I will tackle this, but it will take time. But it's hard when I am so emotionally attached to so many things. I think Toy Story has ruined my generation. :D Everything has feelings, even old broken toys.
@AceVonS7 жыл бұрын
I often use this same method. I reward myself for doing stuff hat I don't like doing like the dishes for example. Yesterday I went through my cleaning cabinet and now i know what I have, what I need and where everything is. I like that feeling.
@purplesky0017 жыл бұрын
Ace Von S huh, that's interesting. I'm probably a similar age to you, I grew up with toy story. I was trying to figure out why I don't mind all that much any more. I think it's because I adopted konmaris system of realising that if an item feels anything it feels really neglected if I'm not using it.
@AlexxWretched7 жыл бұрын
One thing that really really helped me to find all the extra hidden guilt items was to figure out one thing i've always really wanted, and to compare everything I own to this item, selling what I don't want. I ended up very quickly finding the cash for the gamecube I've wanted for a very long time. I had already 'completed' my declutter about 8 months ago, but lo and behold, hidden things! Of course this doesn't work for everyone but it was a relatively new strategy to me that I really want to share because I personally found it worked GREAT!

Bravo! The furniture purge was awesome. I own 4 totes, they hang upside down on an ACCO clip in my entry closet until I take them to the grocery store, that 5¢ deducted from my grocery bill when I use my own tote makes my inner Ebenezer Scrooge heart soar. As for clutter on surfaces, I live in Arizona where dust settles on furniture continuously, so I only allow 3 items on a flat surface because that all my lazy a$$ is willing to move when I dust.
@jademcarthur7 жыл бұрын
Since the summer tends to pull us in other directions, I needed to find a way to stay motivated and on track with my decluttering. I came up with #Top 5. I just try and get rid of 5 items a day. I base it on a 5-day cycle, so by the end of it I know 25 items are leaving my life and space. That helped to bring my focus back into things and tackle bigger areas that I was feeling overwhelmed with.Your journey is wonderful to watch :)
@darleneh6086 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea for a way to attack a problem area. It's so easy to get overwhelmed when you look at an overstuffed garage or basement, for instance. But anyone can find five things to get rid of, and that gives plenty of progress over time, without having to make it a big project for all at once.
@GallifreyRambles7 жыл бұрын
This came at just the right time! I've been feeling really just slow and unmotivated with my clearout. I'm clearing out the house I grew up in. My mom was a collector, my dad didn't have too much, but now it's just me, and the place belonged to my mom since the mid 1960s. I lost my mom in 2014, next week marks 3 years. It's not even that I'm attached to a lot of it, but I know I plan to move, so it's more like every bit of progress that I make, while great, leads me to parting with the place I called home and had a lot of memories in, and is like closing a chapter, but it's not the same place, as the people that made it home are gone. Anyway, thank you for sharing your journey, ideas, and progress!

GREAT JOB-I feel better just watching & I admire your vulnerability (and realize you're well along your journey where it has become easier as you go along) but it's worth saying. I also realize you are fed up & it makes it so much easier to rid of stuff. Me? I would hold onto that gold thingy, thinking it was important. I literally HATE this about myself & feel like I'm never going to make progress. Paralysis by analysis.
@MessyMinimalist7 жыл бұрын
Hah, I feel ya. And like you said, it really is easier now than it's ever been... so you'll get there too! But paralysis by analysis is right. Honestly, I fall into various states of paralysis all the time (decision paralysis is a big one) so sometimes I just force myself to "DO" and not think so much. A little scary at times, but it works! :) Good luck!
@rebannparo087 жыл бұрын
After college I did a multi-state move every year (two of which were completely across the country!) so I kept my stuff to a minimum and it was amazing. I didn't keep anything that wasn't useful or what I loved. I have been in one area for two years and just made the decision that I'll be doing another big move in a year. I looked around at what I'll have to pack and then took several trips of stuff to donate! That might be a good way for people to get in the mindset. Even if you're not moving, pretend you are and get rid of what you wouldn't want to take. Also, I have a donation bin in the top of my closet and can throw things in it without having them visible. Then, when it's full, just donate it without looking through it.

I love tote bags. Speaking of your packing party, I have so many that the last time I moved, I moved using tote bags, suitcases, and 3 still-boxed medium-sized boxes! Since I can't carry more than about 20-30lbs per arm, and at that time I was in a walking cast, the amount of stuff (books, linens, office supplies, dishes wrapped in towels, etc) that fits in a bag is just about perfect. It also meant that things fit better in the car, as bags varied in size and shape, and could get stuffed in an opening in which a box would never fit. I plan to do this each time in the future, which will help me keep my belongings more in control. (I moved using a compact car (Honda) and made it in about 4-5 trips. And just a single load in a borrowed pickup for the futon couch, standing lamp, bike, shelves, and a couple large plastic containers & misc. larger things my friend with the truck could help lift.)

I am happy that my kids have no problem giving things away they no longer love. I grew up in so much clutter, that it took me a long time to realize I have less stress when we have less things!

You're doing great - keep up the good work! I used to be very bad at putting stuff away - I would just set it down wherever I was. Then I learned that it takes 2-3 times as much energy to put stuff in the wrong place, and I started following OHIO - Only Handle It Once. So if I pick something up and use it, it should then immediately go to its home. What I've learned about myself is that if I don't have a home for something and give it a "temporary" home, it never gets a home and turns into clutter. I'm trying my best to give it a home immediately if it's something that I use or brings me joy, otherwise get rid of it. Still a work in progress!!

Rachel you are always so open and honest in your videos. A few suggestions if you don't mind.You seem like you could benefit from a kindle or nook going forward. Also I have a great seasonal suggestion-- only use real items that way you don't store anything. i.e.--boughs at xmas, a real small tree that you can start a xmas tree forest on your property, popcorn and cranberry garland, baked cookie ornaments. If you challenge yourself I bet you could make your home and hotel look amazing, with bunches of grasses, cattails, sunflower heads fresh and dried. Your daughter could help you gather and plan as part of your new family tradition of no commercial stuff holidays, including lots of homemade art of course. Last year I only had votive candles and pine boughs on our mantel and it looked amazing. (of course my kids are grown up) So if you wanted to have a few small things you could put them out, but maybe decide first how big a storage container you would like to have for a specific season. So for example--I want to have a storage container about the size of two shoe boxes for Xmas. Now that you have pre-determined the amount of storage you want, put only the things that will fit into it and have the rest of the decorations be real things made each year. It's the reverse of saying, what items spark joy and saving those. First I'm saying how much of my personal space am I willing to give to storage of stuff, and then only keeping what fits into that space. It's like a reverse mindset! And it works. I told each of my grown kids that I would store "x" amount of space for their childhood treasures, and they both filled up their containers, and we donated the rest. I also gave them some say on how large a container they wanted, and both chose a box about the size of a bankers box. And one shared box for favourite books. Lastly here's an idea for a mindset of storing things. I like to shop, but not to bring home items. I also like Macy's. So I think of Macys as my personal storage closet. It has everything I need. If I ever truly need to replace or bring home an item, I can, but otherwise it stays in my "storage" place. I can go try on clothes, or sample perfume, or look at towels, and I know that when I need it, I could go get it. But I don't have to pay to store it, and my house stays clutter free!! :) Sorry for rambling, I hope any of that helps.

Shoes, shoes, shoes. I cannot tell you how refreshing it is to see your mudroom. I thought it was just me who has a shoe problem. Family takes off shoes and they just pile up by the door, haphazard. If you find a solution that looks good and is easy, ie, the rest of your family actually uses it, please do a video on that. Shoe mess is a huge problem for me. I tried to take all "town shoes" away and only leave "outside" shoes by the door, the ones we use everyday... But still. Mess. 'specially my husband's because he seems to want all his shoes by the door and his take up the most room. And I hear ya on covering every available table top and bench. Your videos have made a big difference for me and I am much more organized now amd really trying to keep countertops clear. So thank you!

My husband and I just moved and this is pretty much what we have been doing. We've unpacked all the stuff we know we will use and everything else is staying in boxes so we can see what we actually end up pulling out and using. It's been working great so far!

xwinoxrhinox just make sure you don't throw it away without going through it a little, or making sure that you have for example vital, hard-to-replace paperwork. Birth, death, marriage certificates and passports or visas come to mind. I've heard that some people do that, just chuck boxes without looking, and then find themselves in a mess.

I moved 6months ago and I tried to do this as I was unpacking, and the previous owner also left some stuff and I just put things as a holding area in the living room and periodically take things to Goodwill since I'm not missing any of that stuff.

Oh nice! Well maybe you can do the TRUE packing party (AKA, only unpack what you need over a few weeks, then donate the rest) :) Good luck!!
