For some reason i really hate watching big youtubers declutter their massive collection, but watching you finesse your moderate collection is really refreshing and enjoyable

I know right! When I want to get an overview of blushes because I want a shimmery baby pink blush the two hour blush declutters can be useful, I can't watch them for enjoyment though. I always feel like "Oh okay, another silky peach blush that's just like the last 4 you showed and is the same as 23 other blushes in this video. Great, all the colors of a drugstore blush that was discontinued 7 years ago and all of them are still unused." They never use the items and then they throw them away! And yeah, PR and stuff, but quite a few of those people bought that stuff themselves and it's maddening. Who needs thirty of the same blushes from over five years ago?!

The concept of “my precious” is what finally gave myself permission to cull a LOT of my collection. Recently a young lady came into my life, as she was adopted by her older brother who I’m friends with after the untimely loss of both their parents. She is 15 or 16. I asked what her passions are and found out she loves makeup and beauty, but was trying to talk herself into pursuing a career in healthcare for traditional reasons. I suddenly starting seeing every object in my makeup collection through the lens of, “is this my favorite thing, or would a 15 year old new beauty lover lose her mind over receiving it?” It has been my pleasure to gift her a ton of barely used high end items to hopefully encourage her passion. For a girl who has lost so much, I want to encourage joy and abundance in her chosen passion. Any amount she uses and plays with these products will be more valuable than whatever playtime I would’ve- maybe, someday- had with them. I am ruthlessly culling my collection now and trying to eradicate overpurchase guilt from my life entirely. I’m clinging to these videos for support in doing so. Watching them over and over. You’re a godsend, Hannah!

It’s true except makeup is a consumable.. it does run out eventually. If I can use something before it expires and then throw it away, I’d rather do that than Declutter it. If I had 5 jars of pasta sauce in my pantry I wouldn’t get rid of them I’d eat them one by one instead of buying new sauce. Esp since nobody would want my secondhand makeup/skincare, it’s all drugstore brands..

You are the only beauty KZbinr whose decluttering videos don't make me want to go buy a bunch of stuff. I appreciate that you talk us through your thought process and intentions. I also really appreciate the Marie Kondo-esque way you think about makeup -- only keeping the items that are both useful and bring you pleasure while still showing reverence for the makeup you are doing away with. I have been on a major makeup-buying spree for the last year and have purchased (and then subsequently gotten rid of) a lot of unnecessary and costly makeup. I love that you express your love for makeup without encouraging everyone to go buy the thing. I just can't express enough how much I love your channel and the perspective you give.

Your declutters are the absolute best! It’s so refreshing to see a beautytuber keep a tight edit as opposed to the oh so common “Here are my 76 different foundations, and I’m going to get rid of these two because they’re old” kind of content.

I love how this declutter series is just low key saving the juiciest part for last: eyeshadow. I can’t be the only one chomping at the bit to see that one. Love this one. I’ve been low key decluttering with you. Have gotten rid of 100 products so far between complexion, lipstick, cream blushes, and a few miscellaneous bits that were too old. Struggling with starting on eyeshadow though.

I recently found your channel when you did the dupe Lisa Eldridge eyeshadow video. I’ve been hooked since. Here’s some reasons why: - your voice is soothing, sincere, trustworthy. - your video style is unique. - you mention more than just the mainstream brands. Some I’ve never heard of before. - the video you did on the difference between a content creator’s makeup collection and a viewer’s collection was real and raw and just what I needed to hear. I can’t wait to make it through ALL your past videos. I’m especially looking forward to your no-buy videos. That is my goal for 2023 and I’m excited to hear your story and advice. Thank you!

What I appreciate and value is that you are very in touch with your skin tone, skin preferences and you are taking a stand against the constant attaining of more and the search for the perfect thing. For you if something works and is the best others are redundant. I have finished a foundation, and am trying to actively finish two more - its going to be next year that those go. But the lesson is that the one I finished I immediately went out and purchased because I love it. And the two I want to finish are older and I don't want to have so many in the future. Auric glow lust is so beautiful as a mixer with foundation I have really fallen in love with it this year. And I am on a ban going forward till I feel like I have the room and headspace to want a new one I don't think its going to be anytime soon. Your stash is so edited now!

Question de: powders-I’m interested in why you consider the givenchy a finishing powder and the kosas/make as setting powders. As a MUA, we use loose powders like the givenchy as setting powders, because they will lock in the cream or liquid products underneath and extend the longevity of your makeup. It being mattifying is a product of those features rather than it’s defining trait (for some of us). And then we would use something like the kosas at the end just to adjust the finish in a couple places (to adjust from oily or shiny to “mochi” as you call it). I’m going to try to your order on me tomorrow, but I was wondering if that change in philosophy might help you since you said the Kosas doesn’t keep your oil at bay?

The toilet paper and the powder. 😂dead. That is exactly how I feel about foundation! If I have the one “skinny-est” best match for me, I can’t imagine needing another kicking around. But I’ve loved powder ever since my first box of Coty in the 80s. I also may have used a little too much Ben Nye loose translucent powder in the very early 90s. Speaking of Ben Nye, I would LOVE to see a stage makeup review. I think of them as the original stick concealer and stick crème blush, as well as highly pigmented powder and baked shadows. Thank you for your smooth sensibilities❤

Oh heck, one of my longass posts, HLP. Enter at your own risk. 😆For starters, so many things I can't use, due to ingredients, so I'll watch you enjoy them. I appreciate all the pairing down you've done in recent vids, HLP. RMS was one of my more recent explorations (during the last 6 yrs) of clean ingredient base products, and discovered I couldn't use them due to castor oil. As anyone knows who reads my blathering, this has happened with so many "clean beauty" base products. I went that direction, in part, to try to get away from unnecessary ingredients, and it turns out that such brands are as impacted by trends as conventional lines. This, of course, led to me reading up on castor oil derivatives, to which I'm still adding to my list. As you spoke, I was going through the items you were vacillating over, to see if any I've not yet tried were approachable. When I first got purito cica bb cream, it was recommended to me because the ingredient list had no cones, but now it does, so I got rid of it. It was too dark for me as well, but the undertone was magnificent, and might have stayed in my inventory for summer use, if they hadn't updated the ingredient list. It makes me wonder if the cones were there all along, due to its texture. **sighs** To that, I've given up on Rose Inc due to seeing texture changes an hour or so after application. Not surprisingly, castor oil derivatives are in the concealer. They are Tribehenin, and polyglyceryl-3 polyricinoleate (Ricinus communis is the castor plant.)😥 The newest product for me, the Chanel highlighting liquid, I fear, caused a breakout all over my nose - that's definitely a contact reaction for me, not regular acne or hormonal stuff - but I'll try it one more time, and if it happens again, out the door it goes. Haven't figured out the potential culprit. Alas, can't use Auric due to bismuth. The first time I tested Bare Mineral foundation, over 20 yrs ago, it felt like tiny shards of glass were trying to wriggle their way into my pores. Apparently, it's a known irritant, so I'm always amazed to see it on ingredient lists, from eyeshadow, cheek, base, lip, etc. products. Out of some of the things you got rid of, I still have the WnW Glass Correct, and LA Girl Pro Conceal green corrector, because my skin hasn't balked at them yet. None of the other corrector products are approachable due to above issues with ingredients. During the pandemic, I tried EXA foundation, but the undertone was so strong, and wrong, then discovered polygyceryl-6 polyricinoleate that I just turned my back on them, until you got the primer and corrector. Surprise, surprise the corrector, which appears to be a perfect color, has multiple derivatives of castor oil. Neither of the EXA primers appear to, so I might check into them at some point, but no hurry. I've got my hands full, between the WnW, but also combining a milky serum with dry oil. I've started to venture back into more conventional brands, to find products that do what I want, and have skin -neutral ingredients for this mug. Still astounded at the high cone usage in conventional and cleaner lines. The thing that still kinda bums me out is if Sappho hadn't changed the emulsifier in their original formula of foundation, I wouldn't have spent so much money on trying to find something that looks good & doesn't cause reactions. I've had a purge box building up since this late spring, and many things thrown away. Fingers still crossed for Kett or SNY working for long term use. Blunder Balm is an absolute no-go. Thanks HLP!

I must have watched each of these videos in this series three times by now. You are reaching into my soul! Many years ago I was a compulsive makeup collector as well but have seriously downsized from then, but I still catch myself holding onto things I don’t use anymore for sentimental reasons. Experiencing so much enjoyment from hearing your thought process is making me excited to ruthlessly simplify my own collection down to a small curated group of items that are truly precious to me, and that I will get joy out of being able to use regularly! You’re simply inspirational ❤

Just a thought: there’s an old photo editing edict that proposes that you ‘edit in’ when going through your photos, rather than ‘edit out’. This just means you go through your shots pulling in only the truly awesome pics, rather than assuming you’re keeping all of them, and only pulling out the bad ones. Especially in the age of digital cameras and cloud storage, it feels like the only way to have a photo set that matches the cognitive capacity of the human mind. I wonder whether that framing might match the spirit of the declutters you’re currently pursuing. Thanks for all the hard work - it’s a joy to watch! 💕

I second this. It would be really satisfying after she collects several new products for review, to see her choose which ones to add into her collection, ultimately leading to a more and more curated collection. This would also be a good way, in my opinion, for her to bridge the gap between her job as a reviewer and her personal drive for simplicity.

I can’t believe what a complexion product hoarder I’ve become. And I felt like it was normal from watching so much beauty KZbin. It wasn’t until watching you whittle your complexion collection down to what I consider the bare bones that I came to realize that it’s not normal to have 50 foundations. I might be exaggerating a bit (but I’m not sure if I am because I haven’t counted them all). I know that if I factor in primer, concealer and powder I’ve gotta be approaching 100 items. I don’t know how you were able to do it! I’m going to try to pick my absolute favorites from each category, but I think I’m gonna need a lot more specific categories. Like favorite summer skin tint, favorite winter skin tint. Favorite winter medium coverage, etc. But then there’s primers! I have so many different types of primers because my skin is so schizophrenic. But I’m definitely going to try to make an effort. And maybe I can finally organize my drawers to the point where I always know where my stuff is!

But complexion wise I only have the Auric Glow Lust, 1 green concealer, 1 skin tone concealer, 1 pressed powder and that's it. Why? Wonderful. The Purito BB cream is my holy Grail but it’s half of a shade too dark. Do you think if I mix the Haus Labs white with it then, it would lighten it half by half a shade and keep the same consistency?

lol the way the haus labs foundation shows up on the table makes it look like you edited the video to blur it out. at first I thought it was a not released foundation you were testing.

Hi Hannah, which shade do you use for the RMS Foundation? Thank you

your videos are so inspiring & always ask me to think more critically on my own habits and my relationship to pretty things. but i really hold the "keep until i finish" close to heart, despite how irrational that may be with some cream products given that i have more than 1 and they take ages to use up. so in some cases, you declutter items you're almost done with. how do you rationalize waste vs simplifying in this case?

also for products like foundation/concealer, which i use every other day or so, i have trouble decluttering bc once i'm done with one, which feels inevitable given its use, i need another. do you think about this when you declutter? or do you think you'd prefer waiting to finish a product then go out and buy another despite decluttering an item you could've replaced the previous one with? the same could be said with products that have longer life lines (powders: setting, blush, bronzer, etc)

I’ve been thinking about the declutter vs. use-up mindset for a while now. Hannah has a steady stream of projects coming in for PR and also because she runs a business that includes consistent review of products for revenue. I, on the other hand, only buy one foundation and concealer at a time. I think I have to declutter some of my products though, because they’re just old and I don’t trust them anymore😅

I was cracking up about your analogy to Powder and toilet paper. I think that because you don’t have oily skin, powder is really not a necessity. for me, I have an entire drawer dedicated to different powders I mean obviously some of them I just wanted to try, and I probably could narrow it down to two or three favorites if I had to, but I do use different powders for different things like I have certain powders that I set my under eyes with I have certain powers that I set my face with, and then I also use a different powder to touch up my skin Throughout the day but that’s just because I get really oily in my T-zone. I wish that I didn’t have to use powder.

i have to disagree on powder. ever since i started using different powders with different finishes (undereye, chin/forehead/nose, sides of my face) i noticed how much better my base looks, so i recommend trying it if you already have multiple different powders :D

I need to declutter my entire house. Would be an absolute doddle, but the other people who live in it somehow think their opinions matter. Such a drag.

Well, to be honest, as a Crohn's patient I do have multiple kinds of TP going at once. Which yes, is fairly absurd. On the other hand, I have one powder and I do not love it but I refuse to buy anything else of that kind before I use it up.
