It's actually really refreshing to see a realistic declutter, and not the miracle social media sensation. There's years to literally unpack, so it's not going to happen overnight.

I noticed you guys were talking about a project list and what has been a game changer for me (it's from Dana K. White) is that doing the project is an absolutely valid use of decluttering time. Going to hang the picture takes just a few minutes and it's something you no longer have to store. Or it makes you realize you don't actually like it better than what you already have hanging and you'd rather donate it. Replacing the doorknob means I no longer have to store a door knob. And I am not annoyed every time I open that door. And it just takes a few minutes. Completing the project IS decluttering.

One of the things I noticed with your sister, which is true of a friend hoarder I work with….is the need for so many single use items that aren’t really necessary. For example, I remember the “thing used to squeeze the end of the toothpaste” that there were 3 or 4 of from one of your sisters videos….. or my friend had like 5 colanders for specific different types of vegetables, but she NEEDS all of them. As I go through my own decluttering journey, there’s moments where “simplify” has to be my motto…. And then I allow that to offset that with moments where I pick my battles and i really USE the 4 different types of vegetable peelers, but I don’t need the collection of knee socks that I haven’t worn in 5+ years. Thank you for these videos! I did 4 drawers in my bedroom yesterday and also one large bag of trash, a pile of goodwill donate, which feels good. (And a pile of “sell” which either I do or donate). I probably am a clothes hoarder, and need to get to a place where everything fits in my bureaus. It helps to have these conversations in my mind as I work.

I think you should create a huge wall of LABELLED drawers in the garage and every drawer contains only one type of item: one for batteries, one for screwdrivers, one for torches and so on. While you're decluttering the house you can add the items you find into the matching drawers and in the end decide how many and which of each type of item you want to keep.

I go through it all the time with wanting to get in shape and change my eating habits. I’m here if she wants the help and as many breaks as she wants is totally fine by me. Great job sis :) I think ultimately both those drawer pieces of furniture should go, since there's no rhyme or reason to what gets stored in them haha. Having drawers vs. just a flat surface or hooks in the entry just collects clutter -- if there's space it'll be filled! But the items aren't for a purpose unique to the entry or living room, so it's unlikely someone would look there for a given item.
@daCubanaqt7 ай бұрын
I agree, especially when it comes to that entry dresser. There were a lot of little dressers when they decluttered the hallway a little while ago as well. Just too many small, not really functional storage pieces. Also, like things need to be stored together. I’ve seen so many tools in weird places. @cathythoemmes31938 ай бұрын
Hi Carla, when I get too overwhelmed with the amount of stuff in a drawer, I use what I call a “sorting box” to help me clean it out. Basically it’s just a flat product box ( like you would get at Sam’s Club), or a box lid the size of the drawer I’m organizing. I literally dump the whole contents of the drawer into the box at one time, clean the drawer, and then decide what is most important to go back in that drawer. The stuff left in the box will go back to where it belongs and the trash, junk or donate stuff automatically gets taken care of.
@prettyflytraveler8 ай бұрын
I was thinking that they could have just emptied the drawers and then sorted after clearing out the spaces. I agree with Carla that it feels that stuff is being shuffled from one space to the next but a lot is being purged too. It is a process. Keep it up, sisters!

Carla I always look forward to your new videos. They are so informative..interesting..and motivational. I am also binge watching your old vids too. I love the series with your sister; although, no video is complete without a cameo from Samson. Thank you for all you do. 🙏🏽💕

I am interested to know if Sherrie is still purchasing things. Maybe she needs some tall book shelves in her living room and office for storage. 🎉 I used the white tall book cases from Target. You put them together yourself, but they sure are sturdy and are excellent for books knick knacks, paperwork and organizing random items. 🎉😊

13:11 I guess the projects list they mean is making a list of tasks you think of when decluttering by coming across the things that need something. It’s impossible to memorize everyting you wanted to do. By writing it down you know where to find all the tasks when you have the time. By not writing it down every item haunts you when you look at it day after day, making you feel bad. It can ease the guilt because you know you’ll get to the list.

Yes, and write on the list where to find the material for your project. 😅

Carla, I applaud you for patiently helping your sister with this tremendous task. And Sherry, I applaud you for letting Carla (and others) help you and let us follow along your journey. I feel like you are slowly arriving at a point, where relocating is not an option anymore. The garage will be much harder to go through the second time. I wish you both the strength to deal with it, please don’t skip this important step! Sherry, maybe look for coaching outside of family to help with your issues of not being able to let go. I wish you all the best!!

Great job! Although I feel your sister still has too many tools, it already looks a lot neater and more organised. Maybe a tally of the tolls on a paper or excel sheet could help. If your sister sees that she has 100 screwdrivers, maybe she’ll be more inclined to get rid of them

My storage options have expanded in the pursuit of containing clutter. As I declutter, I'm trying to get rid of places to HIDE clutter also. I had filled my small house to the brim with furniture. As I get rid of some of these storage pieces, the place looks and feels lighter and brighter. I love spending time with Sheri, thank you for taking us on your decluttering journey! I have trouble with tools, too. Somehow have like 5 measuring tapes and I know I don't need that many but it feels wrong to get rid of them. And where did they come from? Sometimes things get in my house and I don't even know where they originated. :)

Phone boxes are excellent drawer dividers, sturdy & mid size. I used them to divide bigger organizers into smaller zones or in between organizers.

Love these videos. This is the reality of decluttering, it's not linear, it brings up lots of feelings and habits and unlearning those takes time. Keep on keeping in, it will make a difference. It's hard to shop if you are busy decluttering 😂.

I love these videos. If I’m feeling overwhelmed and paralyzed by the amount of stuff I have to do, or go through, I go to this playlist and it puts me in the “let’s just start somewhere” mindset. And so, I start! 😊

You may not be able to change the space over night but you can change the battery in the smoke detector. It’s a major safety issue, how does it beeping not bother you???

Sister is a fan fave! Every time she goes into those drawers she will enjoy seeing those cleared and organized spaces. Sister is correct - decluttering and organizing is a journey. Listening to y’all makes me miss my sister. Thanks to Sherri for opening her home to us.
