I spent today decluttering my younger life. I was storing all of my childhood and young adult life at my parents' house. Now that we are simplifying our lives I thought it would be a good time to go through these items. We are currently on the road to living with less, or at least storing less.►SUBSCRIBE KZbin / @shannontorrens1

This is you mother!! Thank you for spending the day clearing out your stuff and leaving me with a huge space to store my stuff. Because grandpa passed this year, I now have a bunch of his stuff to go through. Boxes that have taken over my office, so now I can move it there and not be pressured to have to deal with it immediately and also trip over it. Sometimes it's easier to just throw everything in the trash. But, I'm so happy that I have kept certain notes, objects, photos to look at that trigger special memories that I would have never remembered. With those memories comes a really good feeling, something you can't share or explain. If you don't feel it, then throw it away.

I think yearbooks are one of those things we are made to feel obligated to keep. I purged all of my yearbooks last year because whenever I looked through them I just felt very uncomfortable.

I think the same thing. Maybe because we spent money on them or have our pictures in them. I am not sure, but I also feel a little obligated to keep at least one.

Wow I know this.. After finishing school I decluttered and boxed to keep stuff from 0 to 16yrs, then at 18yrs again, the at 24 yrs after Uni.. Then I moved from the UK to Germany... When my parents came over after my first child was born they came over with the truck and brought all my boxes... It was 19 boxes!.. I spent 1 yr when home with my baby reducing it all the boxes to 5 scrapbooks/albums and 5 memory boxes... I did the same as you.. Just took photos and stuff from eg year books that were important to me and then put in my scrapbooks/photo albums (album 1 is childhood to lower high school 0 to 14 yrs, album 2 is upper high school 14 to 16 yrs, album 3 is college 16-18 yrs, album 4 is Uni BSc 18-21, album 5 is Uni MSC 21-24 yrs,).. They contain anything I wanted to keep including eg old concert tickets... My kids love to look at these scrapbook/albums and see what I looked like and what I did at the age they are now etc.. Recently I have just reduced those 5 memory boxes down to 1 using the "Swedish Death cleaning method"... And finally I was ready to got rid of 98 percent of my old diaries and letters from friends and boyfriends.. I read it all and had some giggles... But then binned it all.. . Always asking myself " if I suddenly died tomorrow would I want my kids to read/see this stuff".. If the answer is "NO".. Bin/ recycle it!.. I still have some stuff in that one box that I want to get rid of.. But I am not quite ready... But that's ok.. 1 box from 19 is good enough for now! Like you.. Although I am not bothered about a lot of the stuff now during my declutter, live with less phase in life.. I know my kids enjoy looking at it and I probably will enjoy looking back when I am older... It can be useful to help reactive the long term memory when you are old.. We used memorabilia to help my great grandmother remember people and events from her past!

Thank you! I feel the same way about high school, I just don't need to revisit it. I have plenty of photos of my friends from that time so I don't think I will miss the year books. I agree about saving little for our kids because over time it will amount to a lot! The wedding dress thing is so crazy now days! They are usually really expensive and then people feel like they have to keep it. This is one reason I wanted a super affordable dress in my style 😀 . I hope you have a great day!

I purged my yearbooks when going through multiple out-of-state moves with my family of six. Eighteen years later, 34 years after graduation, after divorce, empty nest, and major recession resulting in job and apartment loss, I moved back to my old hometown and in with my mother. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that many of the remaining classmates had grown up into decent adult human beings. I wish I still had the yearbooks (I only had two) because my memory is horrible now and I can't remember names. I did not enjoy high school, so it was a relief to dump them when I did, but life changed and now I regret it.

While I still have my High School year books, I don't really need them as I still keep in touch with my friends from high school despite us being spread all over the country. Every 3-ish years since 2002 (we Graduated in the late '70s) the band gets back together to rehearse for a week and then play some sort of fund raiser show. We're not bad and have a lot of fun.

I had a Thumbelina doll and checked online before, I think, donating. I didn’t find that she was worth anything. She was not in the best shape (we cut all our dolls hair LOL). Usually they have to be in pristine condition and even with box to be worth anything. Had a ton of vintage Barbie stuff too and same thing - nothing worth bothering with. I’ll never understand why people place value on any of that stuff.

When my Parents sold & were moving out of my Childhood Home, my Brother & I had SO much stuff that we didn’t even realize my Mom had kept... Papers from Preschool to Senior Year, Yearbooks, Photo Books- it was INSANE!! I kept my Senior Yearbook & Donated the rest, I also had a TON of cards from every holiday & birthday from age 2+, I kept about 10 total, lol. I had also been storing my Wedding Dress in their Guest Room closet, but ended up donating that also. I hadn’t realized how much space my stuff was taking up, and not even in *my* house! I felt horrible having all of it there for so long! By the time we packed them to move, we had 3 yard sales & donated stuff in 25 trips to Goodwill! My Parents were borderline Hoarders, it was just hard to tell because everything was so organized. I had given my Mom Marie Kondo’s Book, “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up”, Which, she says she follows now (you can tell in their new house) and once they began following the guidelines, it has changed their lives. 🙂💜🙂

Ah I love this video! And I agree, the childhood/sentimental stuff is a really weird section to declutter but SO worth the time! My mom over the years ended up giving me boxes of my baby clothes, baby shoes, school projects, old toys etc. I have one little zip lock bag with some little things like my hospital tag, a lock of baby hair, baby teeth, but everything else...I just didn't want any of it, lol. I have kept some cards from my dad who passed away and ones with special messages but most I threw out. Yearbooks were tough for me to, but I didn't love hs or have a deep attachment to most people in the photos so I just snipped out myself, some good friends a few crushes for kicks and those little photos take up about 2 pages in my journal. Than the books went in the trash. One thing I did keep is my hs letters! I love them. I had a big box full of them and after hs I actually had unfolded all of them and put them all in a 3 ring binder. I have flipped through them many times over the years and they crack me up, so that is one thing I will hold on to.

I loved being in high school although it’s not my favorite part of life, and I did marry my high school sweetheart and sometimes keep in touch with high school friends but I still don’t want to hold onto the clutter of the yearbook itself, thank you so much for sharing this process it can be very tedious and arduous so it’s very helpful to see someone else doing the same thing!

I kept all my yearbooks, from both junior high/high school and college. I go back and look at them a lot, and every single one has notes from my friends written in it - both my high school class and my college class were very tight knit (I was in the same class as a lot of my high school classmates from preschool or kindergarten all the way up through 12th grade), so the yearbooks really mean a lot to me. I also have the first 16 years worth of yearbooks from my high school, from the first year they had a yearbook to the one the year before I started - my high school's community is truly a small world, and I still see a lot of people from almost every one of my high school's yearbooks on a fairly regular basis when I'm visiting my parents, and for a lot of them, I know their names specifically because of the yearbooks. There's a chance that I may eventually get rid of the 14 older ones, but extremely unlikely that I will get rid of the ones from the years I was in school.

I threw away my high school yearbooks when I was in my early 20s. I the nearly 30 years that have passed since then, I have never once missed them. Go ahead and toss them. If high school was the best time of my life, how sad that would be.

That is what I am thinking. I have set the year books aside and I am waiting for a quiet time to go through everything. I agree it would be sad if high school was the highlight. 😀

I hope my comment did not come across as sounding extreme and harsh. I felt the same way about high school that you did. There were some good times, but looking through those yearbooks once I had graduated never made me feel good. I slowly lost contact with all the people I had been friends with in high school too, so I really felt no connection to the yearbooks after a while. But I know I am kind of weird in that respect, so I certainly don't want to encourage you to get rid of your yearbooks before you are ready. Maybe set them aside and after a few more years go by and you have not looked at them, you will feel like you can let them go. I really enjoy your channel! :)

Hi. I've watched couple of your minimalism videos and I really like your casual and realistic aproach to stuff and life in general. I'm looking forward to explore your channel more. I had to write to you because just now I got weirdly interested in your finnish lingual mickey mouse book as a random connection between two peoples on the opposite sides of the world. Wishing you everything nice to your autumn and greetings from Finland!

I have all my yearbooks still. Part of that is related to me having grown up and spending a lot of time with my grandparents (I didn't live with them but they basically raised me). They were teachers (small town, mind you) and got the yearbooks for every year they taught. Even now that they're in their 90s, they will go to them for information on people they taught. So while I personally don't care about my time in school, it's sort of a sentimental thing to keep them.

It's down to going to Costco to have them place them on CDs. A co-worker told me about that. Or there is the company called iMemories who sends you a box and instructions on how to send your photos, slides, negatives, VHS, etc. Both seem to be reasonable in pricing. I first need to go through all photos and discard duplicates, blurry ones and just bad photos (usually with the edge of my finger in the way...;). Do you remember this issue with older cameras? Anyway, got make it a priority as right now I have all my photos on the dining room table and that's not okay.
@shannontorrens1

That is a good idea to use costco, or the place you send everything away too. I know how you feel going through all the photos on your dining room table. A few years ago my mom and I went through all the family photos and it took forever, but we didn't even make a dent in the amount. Now we are really strict with what we keep and I still need to go through the ones I just found! I wish you luck with this project. 😀

It definitely was very helpful! It's hard to come up with a true niche, because there are a lot of channels in different kinds of niches (and why would they come and check me out if they can check out someone popular) so I'm still searching for the right thing to do with still uploading things that I love to create.
