Re: random swimming pool item to keep: You could make a note in or on your calendar around Memorial Day to remind you that your swimming pool testing kit is in the "Random Box." At least, that will keep you from forgetting you have it! I make reminders in my calendar in the future to jog my memory for lots of things. Great ideas! I'm slowly decluttering and appreciate your cheerleading! (I'm in MN, too.)

I think one of the most frustrating things about not having a permanent home for floaters is that they're always in the way (so always getting shuffled about) until the moment that you actually need them. Then suddenly you can't find it for the life of you. 🙄

In those situations I have in the past become so angry with the thing that I decide to 'put it away', and of course, as you have said, then when it is needed it can't be found. I have done this with quite important things. I think I have a problem, lol 😂😂😂😂

As I've been decluttering, that has happened to me. Some things that I've given a home to, I now can't find. I know I'll come across it again eventually as I continue. Meanwhile I'm searching my house and my brain trying to figure out where I put that thing that isn't where I thought I put it. I did that before I decluttered too though. Maybe it's just me...

I do 2 things. First I ask myself, "where's the first place your future self will look for this?" Then I put it there. Secondly, I have an electronic note that syncs to all of my devices titles, "Where is it?" and I put the location of random things there. May seem like too much for some, but it works for me. Here’s an idea that has worked for me for random things: I make seasonal bins to classify them a little better. Things like goggles, bug spray and cooling towels go in a bin marked “summer” in our coat closet, because we generally need them as we’re headed out the door. This time of year, that bin gets swapped with the hats/gloves bins, so it’s not as accessible, but still relatively handy if we have access to an indoor pool at some point.

Hi Dawn! Our TV remote and the TV schedule used to drive me nuts. I tried baskets, trays, all sorts of things. They just became clutter magnets. When I started decluttering last year, I finally convinced hubby that we didn't need the big tv console anymore. Instead, I wanted to use a sewing cabinet that was handed down to me when my mom passed away. It had belonged to her aunt, who I was named after. It had been stuffed in the spare bedroom for two years because I had nowhere else to put it. Now, our TV sits on top, and the top drawer is the home for our remotes. The newspaper no longer includes the schedule, as of this year, so that is no longer in the drawer. Now I can enjoy my little cabinet and I always know where the remote is. I actually put it away and nothing random finds its way into that drawer.

For the "Time Will Tell" basket, use that calendar in there to sort your coupons and catalogs. For the month that the coupon expires, add the coupon on the pages representing that month. For the catalog, put it in the next month; If you haven't ordered from the catalog by then, toss it, knowing that most companies send new catalogs every two months or so. Then, at the beginning of the next month, toss all of the prior month contents because you know they are all expired.

I donated a bunch of stuff (lots in great condition) to a thrift store, then went in after looking for a replacement top for my favourite travel mug. I found my EXACT travel mug BRAND NEW! And trust me, this is not a common mug! I was so happy:)

Junk mail does not even make it inside the house! I have a recycling center set up in the carport with the bag for trash that cannot be recycled, a place for newspaper type items and a place for magazines, catalogs, etc. Works out great and relieves alot of stress. 🤗

Key to living a minimal life -- stop bringing new items in. I have no need for a returns container, as I very rarely order anything online. Maybe a couple gifts at Xmas time. If I needed an actual container to house my returns, it would signal to me that I am ordering too much stuff. Dawn has been so very inspiring in getting me to this point. My house is so peaceful and stress free of clutter. I am digging into deeper layers at this point. Currently purging old tax returns and paperwork that there is no longer reason to keep. My file cabinet thanks you!!! As do I! You are incredibly motivating!

I have been the same! I find that even those simple returns stress me out, so I don't buy a thing unless I am quite certain it is necessary -- it limits so much frustration! It's sad but most people want their homes to be in the latest style which changes every 6 months to at the very most every year. So that means newer storage bins, newer pillows, etc. When there are billions of people on this planet just 2 things for each person adds up. If we are going to be minimalist or even more environmental conscious then we have to stop buying as much stuff.

Dawn, you’re one of my favorite KZbinrs! Our sisterhood in Christ brings me the most encouragement, but your simple, laid-back, and powerful tips have changed my life! Something that has helped us a ton is having a bin for “house-related” miscellaneous - the hook that Dawn showed would be an example of something I’d put in there. Cabinet pulls that came off a closet door I removed but might need for extra cabinets at some point (which just happened to us!), paint and counter top samples, extra shelf brackets, etc. Having this bin has given these “ floaters” a home (and a limit!) but has also come in very handy many times around the house!

I would have put the pool strips where the pool was stored or with the kids' pool toys. The hook I would have put in our basement workshop in the drawer marked "hooks." This weekend, my husband got two hooks out of there to hang a ladder in the garage. It saved him a trip to the hardware store. We're always fine tuning our organizing, so a supply of hooks comes in handy.

Things that need to go back to other people float around my house. I finally mailed a book back to someone because I didn't know when I'd see them again. It felt so good to get it out of my house and she sent a nice thank you text when she received it. I also often forget to bring the things that need to go to other people when I DO see them.

I put things to be given to people into pretty paper bags, label them with the name of the person and put them on the bench in the hall. Whenever I leave the house for errands I check if there's anything I can give to its intended recipient.

Great video! I would store the pool strips in the bin where the sunscreen is or the tote of beach towels or pool toys. I couldn’t keep them in my garage due to extreme temps - either freezing or melting everything! My random items were always tools I brought in the house and not returned to the tool bench. My solution was using a ridiculously hideous used easter pail that I clip on to a handle in the tool chest. When taking the tools elsewhere they go in the pail and then take the pail to where I need to use the tool. Yes, even if it is just one screwdriver. When done items go back to the pail and since it is sooo ugly I’m likely to return it to the tool chest quickly. Tfs!

I used to have a great system for outgoing packages in my house before I downsized to a single room. I had a hall table by the front door under which I put a very large rectangular basket that could slide everything out all at once. Inside, I would put a paper bag labeled "Donations", a plastic bag for the special hazardous waste (such as batteries), and a bunch of empty bags with a pen. Anything and everything that needed to leave the house (except trash and recycling), would go in that basket with a label on what it is and where it needs to go. Need to return a book to the library? In a new bag with a label. Need to give a gift to someone at next Saturday's party? In the basket with a label. Need to donate some items? Into the pre-labeled bag. Anytime it was leaving, I would check the basket to see if I had the time or was going in the right direction to get rid of something. It was so simple because I would just grab the correct bag(s) and away we go. I work from home, so it made no sense to run out just to donate a single item. The basket made everything look nice, the placement made everything convenient, and I always knew where to take these items. Still have the basket, too. :)

we don't have returns as such here in the UK, WE ARE 65 AND 76 AND WITH THE HELP OF A YOUNG COUPLE ARE SLOWLY reducing our inventory. The pantry has just been addressed and we can now paint it, and the painter is coming in October to decorate the utility room, cloakroom, lobby, and conservatory. our friend Eloise will hopefully work with us on our cupboards and we will donate to various free sites or family if they want things. Love your videos and family, your boys look like Tom and your girls look like you. We have an air fryer and watch Catherine the frugal fryer. I tried to get her book but non-available in the UK. We need that cupboard for "RETURN TO OWNERS". Example: That casserol dish goes back to aunt Mary. The library books. The bag of donations. The pictures to give to your Mom. .....We need that cupboard/ closet, near a door we use. I like things out of sight. Therefore that so called cupboard/ closet, would need doors or a curtain. I have a waist-high bookcase behind my front door that I use for returns and grocery bags in a tote; shoes on the bottom; “landing pad” on top for keys, masks, purse. Wonder if I could make a skirt for it (it’s lovely oak), or if matching bins with labels will hide enough? I really like Dawn’s variety of bins and chalkboard labels!

I got rid of my junk drawer (thanks to your decluttering encouragement), and I am so happy I could cry! I will never look back; it’s worth making a space for everything! Tom probably has a skim net and some salt or chemicals tucked away somewhere for the pool. If the strips are stored by those items (out of the package, so he doesn’t need to deal with that initial trash), he is probably going to use them and enjoy the benefit. We have a “mom needs to fix” bin Those things used to land on the counter by the coffee maker and had no home. We’d shove it in the paper cabinet when cleaning and create another mess. Now we have a place for them (the random things) in the in between time. Thank you!

I just cleaned out the junk drawer and put all the random tools in an old tool box. Tool all the other items and organized by category (batteries, electrical, etc…) in little bins. Worked great!

You're in my head now, I decluttered the bottom 2 shelves in my utility room where a lot of floaters land. When I stepped back to admire my work Dawn's voice popped into my head "flat surface" and bam, I removed those two shelves and their brackets, they're now on the porch by the front door for the next Goodwill run never to hold clutter again (at least at my house)

So I just moved from my newly remodeled house in Iowa to Texas.😟 I really didn’t pick this house it was the best choice available. We moved for a new job opportunity. Definitely better.😀 for my hubby. That’s good. So this house had one very big closet off the master bath.. I can fit a couch in it. It’s my hiding place. I would like to make it more attractive. This house has a a lot of waisted space. Overwhelmed by how to handle the space. Id like just a simple wardrobe that works.. Your phrase "inventory management' really impacts how I approach organizing. This afternoon I emptied a multi-purpose closet to allow workers access to a scuttle hole that goes under the house. The tidy closet is organized with labeled bins and zippered garment bags. It was easy to move everything out of the closet and will be just as easy to put everything back in its place. But it is a good opportunity to look in all the bins and garment bags before putting them back in the closet. There's a very good chance I no longer need many of the things I organized and labeled ages ago. Less inventory! Thanks for your energetic messages :)

Thank you so much for what you do - I love your attitude, your cheery face. You have good lighting and the camera loves you - you never look bad! Your voice is pleasant, and the content is well planned. One tiny thing - your eyes flick back and forth between the viewer, and something else - maybe your camera vs the screen you're seeing? I noticed this in zoom calls. The camera evidently is off to the side, so if I'm looking at the person I'm talking to on the screen, the camera is filming me at a slight side angle so I look like I'm looking off to the side.

Thanks for the reminder a Dawn! My key bins in our main living area help me tackle so many different types of clutter: 1. "Clutter" I use this to clear off our eat in kitchen table when we need to bring in groceries/eat/use that space but maybe don't have the time to run everything back to it's permanent home. We empty and return things every evening (or two 😉). 2. "Projects" where I toss current items for the little project (sew the button back on the toy, the hook that I actually want to hang back up, the putty to fill in the hole after the first layer dries from a frame we took down). This stuff created clutter for us, so I made a home! 3. "Return" for returns to friends/family/church/the stores 4. "Declutter/Donate" I think this one speaks for itself.

Can you please make a video about the "one day I have to fix or do something with this" things? Right now I have a lamp I have to replace, some pants need sewing, and a old, broken phone I want to charge and remove stuff from. All of these things I will do, when I have time and energy. I keep my returns in a basket in the same spot so I always know where it is. Then when I’m ready to do returns I process them, grab the basket & voila, it’s done. This is of course is if I was already planning to go that direction. I hate making a bunch of small trips. Thanks for the encouragement to keep our living spaces tidy & organized!🌺

Oh my gosh…I needed this video 👍🏼. I just went through a large bin of things I pulled off my dresser when we had company coming….that bin got put out in the garage for a week….my husband just brought the bin up for me to sort, so much randomness in that bin that was on my dresser! I sorted what room it should go in and took it there immediately, threw some things away, made a donation bag,…NOW the bin is empty 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼.

Excellent tips! I have a hard time throwing away things that are still useful to someone (like the hook). I donate many things (as many of us do), and in my city, we have a habitat for humanity donation site which adds another "home" for random things that are related to a house. I keep a box for these home related things and make a few trips a year. Great video. Many thanks!

The hook situation has me conflicted a bit, because hooks are SO incredibly useful. I think i would rather find a permanent home for it because I know would be so outrageously upset if I had to go out and spend my TIME (!!!) and money on finding another hook, or ordering a hook, knowing just a few months ago I had a perfectly good one I could have stored and used if needed. Although you are getting rid of the hook now and no longer have to manage that physical item, you will have to manage the task of finding/buying a NEW hook when you inevitably need a new one in the future (which will require time/energy you didn't need to waste had you found a home for the perfectly good one you had!! ).

My context....Until I’m done going thru and reorganizing my house I keep anything I can potentially use to organize things once I’ve downsized. I have a hardware area I put potentially useful stuff. That will be cleared out once I’ve finished the main downsize. Works for me.

We bought a livable but unfinished house. We also have bins for items we might use in other areas. It's been a long haul, 3.5yrs but I cant tell you how many times those bins have saved us money!! Now we hope to be moving in a year or so. So as we know we are done w the bins it gets stacked neatly in the garage. The next home will likely be a fixer also.

I use my “inbox” in my office as a combo “Sunday box” and “time will tell box” and it’s worked out great. Anything I might need is in one spot and even if I look the through the box once a week I may still put stuff back in it - because it’s not time yet for that paper.

My husband works two jobs and comes home to dump his pockets. His dump basket wasn’t big enough anymore so I switched it up with something that fit the same spot. He actually cleaned it out today. Keys, knives, flashlight, charger, security stuff and tools. I got sick of sockets being on every counter. It’s working!

We always had kitchen appliance manuals taking over 2 junk drawers. We are down to one junk (miscellaneous) drawer, but I need to finish setting up a crate we have, that will contain all of the device manuals we have. I got a homeschool ChristianBook magazine and found several great ideas in it. I stuck it in my planner so I can revisit it later and decide if I should write those items down, or maybe I don’t want some or all of them after all. Returns end up on our kitchen table. We don’t have any place for them. Fortunately, we rarely have returns.

I totally agree with you about Target's bedding. I love it! I have had good luck with the Knox Rose brand of clothing at Target- mainly casual dresses. I am petite with an apple body shape and the Knox Rose dresses have been flattering.

Wow I definitely have some floaters that have been driving me CRAZY! Need to tackle these over the next week. I know which mine are because monthly when the housecleaners come I have to stash them somewhere. Then the next month I say "Argh why is this still getting stashed?" Time to DEAL WITH IT. I have a labeled box in the hall closet "? Small Mystery Parts ?". I rarely match up the mystery parts, but the box doesn't take up much space. Every once in a while, yes I do find its true home, and I'm glad I held onto it.

Regarding the hook: we have a compartmental hardware bin in the house. I would probably put it in there and take that opportunity to look through my hardware to see if anything could go (the one in one out rule). If hubby was home I would ask him if he needed it in the garage; he always give a quick yes or no!

I’ve been watching your videos since before you had a 100k subscribers, and I still enjoy and learn from them! I totally agree about the returns. I leave mine all together on the counter near my purse (it’s tucked off to the side of the kitchen). I don’t like having extra things on the counter, so it motivates me to get them returned and out of the house because they bug me so much! Out of sight, out of mind for me, too.

Thanks so much, Dawn, for inspiring me to take care of All of my floaters while I watched you're video. I just kept pausing and decluttering lol. My biggest floater problem is things that need to go out to my car. I have on street parking, so it's kind of a pain to take stuff out there, especially in the winter. I usually put stuff for the car on the counter, or the piano, or the floor by the front door... Then I get used to seeing stuff there and when I do go out to drive somewhere I always forget to take the things with me!

The hook really brings to mind something that I have commented on before. Things that are useful and in good shape but not enough stuff to bother taking a trip to a donation center are great to offer up for free on Marketplace or a buy nothing group. You can literally do a no contact pick up that requires nothing of you but to set it outside somewhere.

I am a big Buy Nothing user too. However I find it a management problem for me. First I have to keep track of posts, package and label for pick up, deal with stuff that end up not wanted by anyone and keep track of “no shows”. I’m really wanting to continue being an active member but need a system that doesn’t overrun my life

@@ptisdale3144 I have a system now as I have had the same...I will make a group of items if I have multiple like items and offer it up first come first served...not contact. I also ask that they please take all. If the items are not gone within a set amount of time (usually a few days- weather permitting) then the items move to a larger box to go to the donation center. I have honestly had better luck offering free on Marketplace. I think because you can report no shows people are less likely to ditch pick ups.

My "homeless" stuff is nearly all random "housewares" - like cup hooks and curtain tie-backs and picture hangers and stuff like that. Thankfully I am able to put them in a labeled bin on a basement shelf. It's a "container" so easy to manage and it's out of our regular living space so I don't have to look at it all the time, but it's pretty accessible if I need anything. And when I think, "Where would I find a cup hook?" that's where I would look! The "container" concept really does help as a visual cue to keep the contents manageable. In regard to your pool test strips - I wondered why you just wouldn't put it with the pool (which is presumably packed up and put away somewhere)? /S

I realize you are probably trying to help folks to think about a misc. bin but I would tape that item for the pool with the pool since it is in a box somewhere. I have also taped the sales slip to an item or box until I decide what I am doing with it. Or put in the bag with the return item so I don't lose the reciept. Misc. bin sounds like a great idea.

If that hook was in my house, it would have made its way to the odds and sods box in the shed…we are always dipping into it for ourselves, family or friends! It’s a box of random stuff and is very useful! It contains, dog leads, door handles, faucets, hoover attachments and other random stuff! The rule id it has to fit the box. 😄

I struggle with things I need to give back to or mail to friends and relatives - they need to be visible enough to remember on the rare occasions we go to visit those folks but don’t want them front and center all the time. Things for people to pick up from our Buy Nothing group too - outgoing items generally. The time will tell bin (which is my house is just a little shelf) has been very helpful. And I have a miscellaneous household box for hooks, timers, etc that works well.

I hang a bag with my coat that has things to go out. Returns, drop offs, expired meds to sheriffs office, etc. I include them as part of my errands.
