After all these years… no re- issues, a and couple of blog tributes aside…. this masterpiece has existed almost exclusively on YT for 15 years now. This entire record still holds up today better than most of the Jane’s catalog. What would it take to get Dave and Eric and any drummer out for ONE tour? One festival? One show?

How in god's name have I not heard this till now?!? I'm a HUGE Jane's fan....and thought I had obtained and listened to every obscure tangential bit of music connected to that band. But somehow I missed this entirely. I've always thought Dave is pretty underrated. The thing I love most about his style....is the LACK of the usual blues-based minor pentatonic sound. Sure, he goes for that sometimes. But more often he plays with *_major_* key tonalities...suspended 2nd and 4ths, 6ths, major 7ths...etc. It gives his sound a really pretty kinda cosmic vibe that balances out the rhythmic quasi-metal riffing. Just a very unique approach to guitar that I don't think he gets enough credit for.

Michael Murphy kind of disappeared and nobody’s been in touch with him. A journalist named Aaron Gilbreath published a series of articles about this album, and was unable to track down Murphy (he did speak to Avery and Navarro though). The recently deceased Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins was a huge fan of Deconstruction too, and tried to arrange for shows with himself filling in for Murphy, but it didn’t happen somehow. I still think it’s one of the most brilliant things ever recorded.

@@mondoshredder5783 I dont know if this is 100% accurate. I have heard both Eric and Dave say that they had plans to tour and possibly future releases but Navarro got recruited by the Chili Peppers right as this album was being released. They released a video for L.A. Song in fact...but since Navarro was already committed to a new band...the video got no major release and was only shown on MTV once or twice to my knowledge. I'm sure they didnt press a ton of copies but I believe they had potential future ideas in mind. When I met Avery in 2002 I mentioned this album and he said "well...what could have been right?" Which is a totally ambiguous answer. Either way. Its a phenomenal album that deserves a bigger audience

“Blue screen water. It’s just a backdrop. It’s not an Ocean anymore. It’s just a backdrop. Now come on.” Tracks 1, 11 and 13 do it for me. But the others are more subtle insight into the composer’s world. I lived in LA from 1980-1984. So I got some of it. Not as deep as the composer. As I had a way out planned in advance. I left there without feeling a deep sense of personal loss. Except for one lovely woman, I have never regretted leaving LA.

Back in the 90's I had this strapped to my hip for long rides between gigs in the old northeast college butterfly tour circuit. A lot of the people I played with wouldn't want to ride with me in the gear van after a while since it was either this or the first Catherine Wheel record. I remember once chucking this in the PA at a gig in Albany and trying to get a loop of WORK FOR FOOD pulled into a pedal so I could fuck with it while trying to get through a soundcheck. Couple of girls at the bar started vibing on it which was pretty cool.

Yes! Perfection! I got it the day it came out 27 years ago...still sounds amazing today. Here is a mind fuck...this came out 27 years ago and The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band came out 27 years before that!

If you were there at the time, you know. If you are just discovering this album now, welcome--this is one of the great unsung albums of the Alternative era, released right as the corporate vultures were picking the corpse clean. I picked up a tape of it upon release while in college and near wore it out with repeat plays; listening to it now, I'm really struck by the sheer volume of creativity Dave and Eric muster when sober and free of Jane's and all its baggage. I also like that it's *not* a JA album; the drums give it a different feel and Eric's singing has its own particular quality when watched with the frankly brilliant lyrics.

@@grizzle7935 Very true - musically great album. Kieldis pinned the blame on Navarro even tho he himself was by far the weakest link - couldnt sing.

@@FruitCakeReaperhe couldn’t sing yet he made a career out of singing? lol. It was the chemistry that was off. Anthony’s voice sounds great, within the limits of certain kinds of music namely Hendrix influenced funk which John Frusciante was a master at. Notice Hendrix music was a lot of talk singing. Anthony was a better talk singer than Hendrix, had a great timbre albeit no range. Blood sugar, amazing album.

@@ExcitedAnacondaSnake-hg8ec this was the first time Kieldis was forced to "sing, sing". The vocals ended up being very monotoned and drawn out droning at times. It made the album darker and more twisted but musically by far the weakest part of the album. Navarro changed how Kieldis had to approach the songs as Navarro wasnt straight funk like all them before him. Navarro has a more interesting, varied and dynamic approach to his riffs. I think Kieldis resented that and that is his "lack of chemistry" a long with Navarros equally big ego. Kieldis would rather hear only the good things from Flea and John and im sure he can bully them around tactfully lol. Anyway thats just my opinion, i aint changing it like you dont have to change yours. Lol

@@FruitCakeReaper I actually agree with you. Navarro was used to Perry , a much more melodic singer with quite a range. Navarro was never a funk player so it was a strange pairing with the peppers. Navarro was into metal, classic rock, and goth, which fit perfectly with Eric and Perry’s sensibilities, sharing classic rock and goth but also meshing the indie stuff. Funk didn’t work with Navarro style and i agree with your take. A better singer could have made those Navarro guitar tracks something better, more interesting. However, a band is supporting the lead singer essentially. Anthony wasn’t wrong to have an ego as do all lead singers. If their backing isn’t supporting them to sound the best they can be,then they should eff off.
