Janes have been my favorite band since 1988 and while Navarros playing is one of the reasons I chose to become a guitarist.....Eric Avery has always been my favorite member of the band and in my point he is the true foundation of the Janes addiction sound. Each member is unique in their own way...no doubt...but much like the unsung brilliance of John Paul Jones and Geezer Butler...its their bass playing that truly serves as almost a secret weapon and separates them from their peers

Musically, Eric was the heart of Jane's Addiction. Every member brought something special, but Eric did more than just provide the 'base' in a musical sense - his basslines gave the songs a character. I'd love to have heard more, particularly regarding what other musicians or bands influenced him when he was starting out. Nonetheless, great to hear him talk with such enthusiasm, and great to see he's back with Jane's!

Every great song of Janes is indeed built around his iconic lines. He's phenomenal.
@zorak1997

Yup, and it started that way due to a lack of options. When the band first began it was only Eric and Perry. Eric would jam on his bass while Perry would sing lyrics he'd written. Every now and then they struck gold and when they later hired a guitarist and drummer they fleshed it out, but that's basically why songs like Summertime Rolls, Three Days, Mountain Song, etc., all begin with only a bass guitar playing before the instruments and vocals join.

I've taught myself all of those lines by ear because they are all so fucking badass. I love playing along with Three Days. One of the most epic songs that exists. Truly the prog of punk rock.

There’s a reason that Eric held either the partial or sole writing credits for just about every song Jane’s put out on their first 3 records. Even though I enjoyed the music they wrote & released after their initial break up at the end of 1991, most of those songs just never quite sounded like the same band that released those first albums. It kinda felt like they lost their soul. And while it’s a shame that now Dave’s the one gone, it’s still great to see that Eric’s not only back playing, but back playing all those songs that made Jane’s the best fucking band on earth. Anyway, thank you very much for this interview! It was fantastic!

My hero. I grew up figuring out, learning, playing Eric's bass lines and am a better player because of it. He taught me to "dance around the table" instead of following the guitar player. Thank you Eric Avery for impacting my life so profoundly. I hope to have the honor of thanking you in person one day. I am truly grateful.

He did more that just thump along to the root note. At the same time, he didn't over play. Very melodic, and still providing a solid foundation. Basically its what i shoot for, when playing bass.

Just got tix to see you in Raleigh in September. Last time I saw Jane’s was in Raleigh at the Realto Theater. First time was at the Pterodactyl in Charlotte opening for Iggy. Your music changed my life and I can’t wait to see the OG lineup again. Also get to see Love and Rockets who I’ve never seen before. September seems far away but I’m stoked. The withdrawal of Eric Avery wrecked the band chemistry. The songwriting just was not the same without him. Everything fell in line around that bass like a train charging fixed on a track. Led Zeppelin was the exact same situation and needed the bass to carry its power.

Eric Avery is the greatest bassplayer since Peter Hook. No Eric = No Jane's. I know Eric's previously said that he developed Mountain Song from a pre-Jane's guitar riff that some kid had showed him - but what's the betting that the kid was actually playing Reasons Love by UFO? kzbin.info/www/bejne/gImTqaWAnK2Aaac
