Hi Maddie, we always have a real tree because it reminds me of my childhood and I'm now a senior !! Afterwards its used to create nesting areas for our ducks and chickens as they love to nest under the branches. It stays until all the pine needles drop and then they use it for perching, so it is truly recycled. I have no problem with artificial trees but myself and my family love the smell of a real one . Very much enjoying vlogmas with you 🧑‍🎄 xx

Loving these festive daily vlogs! Hallway lights look really nice. The garland was also beautiful! I always had a real tree till last Christmas and started using a fake one that was given to me. It looks such good quality and real - bonus no needles on the floor and they were becoming so expensive to buy. Like you I see benefits of both though 🎅

We bought a 5 foot real potted Christmas tree 3 years ago and we potted it on into a huge pot when we got it home and this is our third year using it. Every year it goes back out onto the patio in it's pot to carry on growing and each December we bring it inside to use for Christmas. I think it's the perfect solution to the sustainability issue. The tree is still alive and when it gets too big for us to be able to carry it inside, we will plant it in our garden and get another living tree and start all over again 🙂

I like to take it slow with the decorating, so ya, definitely do not have everything done already lol. I like a slow build towards Christmas. I usually end up inspired to do some project as I go and I like to leave room for that. It’s the 2nd of December and I realized I had not gotten advent calendars and decided it’s ridiculous that I buy them every year so my daughter and I are going to design our own tomorrow and spend the day crafting one together. If I had everything already set to go, there’d be little room for spontaneous inspirations like that. Well, that’s how I think of it anyhow. I like Christmas being a season that sort of unfolds organically every year. Something special always comes my way when I don’t put too many expectations on it. Love watching other people’s traditions and ideas. Just makes me so happy, so thank you for sharing. I know it is a load of work for you ❤ Oh, and absolutely in the real tree camp. Having that smell, the texture, the quirkiness each tree comes with …. It’s the one non negotiable tradition for me.

i like the idea of palmer gray for the office and then doing the trim around doors and windows of the office in the darker color. then you have more options and they seem to compliment each other. love the hallway lights!

Madeleine your intro is amazing. So sweet and loving. The lights are beautiful in the hallway. I love the way the one by the staircase reflects the light in the space . I just love your home. I’m soo happy for you and you both are putting a beautiful stamp on it . You garden looks amazing with the new patio. I don’t comment all the time but I’m amazed at all you’ve accomplished so far. Beautiful family home. Love the lighter blue for the exterior wall but whatever you chose will be lovely I love fresh trees but switched to imitation trees when my son was a baby and I’d not money for real tress as a single mum, plus allergies are a major issue for me and the bonus is the tree can go up early and no pine needles all over the place. But I do make my own wreath for the front door and a few in a vase with flowers as they last a long time. Enjoying your vlogmas. ❤❤❤

My birthday is on the first of December, so growing up my parents always waites until after we’d celebrated that to start decorating. Now, I live abroad and travel back to my parents’ in mid-December … so I find myself wanting to decorate earlier and earlier to be able to enjoy it for as long as possible before I travel!

Here in Italy the tradition is to decorate the 8th od December, since it's a religious holiday connected to Christmas! Probably also because it's a national holidays - even if Italy should be a secular state many national holidays are christian-based, but I digress - and so most of the people are home and have time to decorate! In my family though we've always decorated way later than that - some times even as late as the 23rd -, because my mum's a teacher and every year has to start super early with christmas themed crafty things with the kids, so by the time december comes around she's already fed up with it xD I'm living with my partner now and this is the first year we get to decorate our own flat and we're starting today, it seems super odd to me but I'm glad we'll get to enjoy all the decorations for more than a month!

I'm enjoying your vlogmas. I actually went to a local woodland's xmas fayre today and got all the christmas tree ofcuts from the Christmas Tree selling station to make my own wreaths. I had to buy ribbon as I've just moved and alot of our stuff is still in boxes in the garage of a family member but I went for a walk through the same woods and found holly and ivy which I will add to it. They were selling bags of pinecones too and I just added some real candy canes. I already have some lights but thankyou for the idea. Ive had fun making it and its such a lovely smell in the living room x

I would definitely go for the de Nîmes paint outside on the office, the lighter one from your hallway will show the wear and tear outside a lot more! The de Nîmes is beautiful AND will wear really well. And then you’ll have some variety, too. 2 beautiful colors, instead of having the same as inside :) 🧑‍🎄

The garland and wreath on the door look so cute! We get our tree the first weekend in December but then don't decorate fully with holly, ivy etc until the Winter Solstice which is tricky when people want decorating videos from November.

Office - de Nikes is a better outside colour, the inside letter might look a bit cold. Do all the walls in de Nikes and use the hallway gray on the windows and double doors. Re tree - real tree preferable in a pot brought in each year.

I got a balsam hill tree last year and it is absolutely stunning quality. Everyone always thinks it’s real at first. I would say if you really want to invest in a quality faux tree that you’ll enjoy for the rest of your life, they’re the company to do it with! Keep in mind they seem to do a Black Friday sale every year. 🎅🏻

Sustainability trick you might like: my local charity shop will take packaging to wrap their sales with, so they can be reused rather than recycled

Blue for inside walls is fine but not for the external garage walls. I would go for a light stone neutral colour similar to the main house colour

Love the two sofas in living room (comfort comes first), but with the bigger ottoman -- it does feel tight. Perhaps put the original ottoman back? It's smaller and the colour really suits the living room.

I love your lighting choices and your decor! Just a suggestion, but when you are using nails and screws for outdoor projects you might want to choose galvanized ones. It will protect them from rusting.

Plus it's pretty, and time just flies by so fast. Obv if using real tree & foliage it wldnt last that long, so i get that. (Apts here dont allow real trees anyway.) But man, i just dont have the energy for something so short lived 😉

I think whether you have a real tree v a fake tree can depend on where you live. Here in Australia it’s normal,y warm/hot and we don’t have the same access to real trees. Fake trees are also much easier to look after.

Love your cottage and what you have done with it-fabulous. I like the colors you have chosen. The light fixture/lantern by your back door looks so much like the ones I am using to replace the old ones on my old farmhouse. Mine have 3 candle light bulbs in them. I now use an artificial Christmas tree from Balsam Hill. It makes cleanup so much easier. Also I like to put up my tree and decorate early.....I do this the first weekend of December and real greens just do not last. Love your intro. What is the name of the garland you purchased from BH? It is beautiful. Your home is magical.

it is funny how you say that you feel all those decorations in the begining of december are put on too early because I am from eastern europe and here you dont put decorations now, acording to tradition you should decorate your christmas tree on the 24th of december, earlier we put maybe some "signs of christmas" to get into the climate and survive the dark winter :D and later we keep our christmas decor for almost a month approximately to the end of january, however the american trend to decorate anything already in november is also knockig to our door and some people do that
