Decrease your GPU temps with a single fan

This is not a video on how beautiful or glowing my setup is, but how practical and useful a fan can be on the back of a GPU.
Also sometimes you need to "butcher" your case to increase airflow specially when manufacturers comes with airflow obstructing grills.
Case : Lian Li OD 11 Dynamic XL
EVGA 1080 Ti, CPU Ryzen 7600
I reduce fans RPM as you can see in column 4 of the chart 2:41.
BattleField V 1hr and 10 min gameplay @2k -Ultra - locked @60 FPS temps looked like this;
GPU 51.8 C, Hotspot 65.8C, Mem2 and Mem3 - 53 and 52 C, PWR4 56 C
CPU 53 all temps are average.
Fans used for my GPU NF -B9 Redux and NF-A9 PWM.
You also can get a similar 92 mm fan from Arctic for a lower price. Noctua fans can be expensive.
On cards like 3070, 3080, 4080 or 4090 it might get even a higher decrease in this temps since they all have higher TDP than my 1080 Ti which goes on max 290 Watts. Good Luck.

If works and easy to achieve why not. A lot of people are simply scared just cause is not made by hardware brand :)

Did you notice higher fps? Newer cards automatically clock to the highest possible for their cooling, essentially always overclocking themselves, so its worth cooling the 3000 and 4000 series. But im not sure if the 1080t has that also. Have you tested if you were able to max out higher fps? Interesting video thanks.

Sorry, I'm for VRAM cooling and GPU longevity, FPS increments are not my scope. Anyways, human eye usually rarely notice a visual difference over 80 FPS with small exceptions. So you shouldn't look to increase FPS over 100, you just overheat the card and waste energy for the sake of a number and you'll not gain any visual benefit. My 1080 Ti goes max frequencies if app requires and don't remember seeing it throttling down for thermal reasons or other.

but how is the fan attached to the gpu? and how is this going to do anything when my gpu backplate is just solid metal with no holes?
@pete0274
@pete0274 Ай бұрын
Look again at the video, I mounted rubber pads(brown) to the fan, those rubber mounts act as little non slippery legs. Yes, GPU doesn't have holes that's why I sit the fan in such way to pull the air from the card towards the top of the case.

This is only possible for those with Water Cooling, for those with a hefty Air Cooler for the CPU will NOT be able to do this.

the airflow from the fans in an air cooler should have a simmilar effect right
@pete0274
@pete0274 Ай бұрын
No, I've done it with several Air coolers - Baram, Mugen, Arctic Freezers few variants, Prolimatech V B. I always thought about clearance between GPU back and CPU radiators before choosing an Air Cooler, but that's me cause I'm doing this since 2000. There are also slimmer fans 10mm or 15 mm thick if you have the clearance for that. Still, are enough air coolers which are too big for this setup and none of the fans will fit underneath.
@pete0274
@pete0274 Ай бұрын
@@THEbigEIRNIE No, the fans from air cooler have already a job putting enough air pressure trough the rad fins. The effect of those fans is very little. I remember testing that with Arctic Freezer.

Why exhaust air off the card? I would point airflow onto the card and would be far less likely to get fan blade turbulence noise that you easily get in most situations on the intake side of the fan. Direct air flow always cools an object better. Just stand in front of a big fan some day and then stand behind it.
@pete0274

Pushing air will just spread the hot air into your case, pulling it will send the hot air up towards the fans in the top of your case and than exhausted from there(convection), also when pushing air in this case you create more turbulence since your GPU backplate doesn't have fins or gaps for the air to go trough, your fan will meat more resistance and will increase vibrations. Hot air always rise, physics laws, why pushing it down instead of taking advantage and fast forward it to the top of the case using a fan?

Just get a case with front intake, it keeps my ssd, chipset, nvme and gpu cool, since it acts like a windtunnel. Unlike your jank setup.

Airflow in the case is good. The point of the video is not the airflow in my case but, the fact that a fan on the back of your GPU is always better than none.

Yah instead of butchering your current case, just get like a gamedias case, they have excellent double air intake on the front and are literally like a 60 at most dollar case
@pete0274
@pete0274 Ай бұрын
I butchered the case cause they use bad type of grills . Is way much better airflow without that grill.

If you are using a 7 year old GPU then the reason of it overheating might be the termal paste beeing dry af and needs to be replaced. But yea, you can also install 4 more fans xD.
@pete0274
@pete0274 Ай бұрын
It was changed, and is not overheating, is just better with a fan as you can see for yourself from the tests 10C less. That 7 year old GPU does 1440P.

@@pete0274 Alright. But you can also get a tower with better airflow in general. I have 200mm fans and I learned that I get better temps just by increasing them by like 50rpm so I can see how your method is working. I didn't say it was a bad card, I just assumed you didn't know about thermal paste, sorrry.

@@YoDaPro The case got good airflow and yeah a Fractal Torrent would have been better but, was way to expensive and not many retailers had it. You assume I didn't know about thermal paste because are not enough leds in the case? If you watched the video properly you would have seen the card was deshrouded. Deshrouding and not repasting it??
