Personal experience most battery banks can charge, and output at the same time, they only stop power output for a second when plugged in, most likely some sort of safety reset. You can also diy a battery bank with a TP4056 micro USB 5V 1A lithium battery charger board with output, that doesn't cut power output unless battery voltage drops below 3v, hook board output up to a 5v 1A usb step up converter, which should be more than enough for any dash cam.

This is true especially of the name brand, like Anker, batteries. With the no name brand of the week Chinese designed junk that Amazon pushes however all bets are off. It also depends on how much power you need to pull from the pack and your charging source. If you’re pulling 2 amps and charging at 2.4 amps the battery will receive little if any charge due to efficiency losses. Dash cam specs often specify 2 amps at 5 volts but typically draw more like 0.3 to 1 amp when recording. In reality unless you’re going to park your car somewhere risky for days at a time the 1.5 to 5 watts of power won’t drain your vehicles battery that much. 10 hours at work would be 50 watt hours worst case. A car battery can deliver over 500 watt hours and still start the car. So you’re only using 10% of your car battery’s effective accessory capacity. And those numbers are all conservative. A dash cam could do say 10 fps in parking mode to reduce power consumption until it detects an incident. You can buy security cameras now that run 24x7 for up to a year on small internal batteries. They do so by only recording when they detect something worth recording.

Thank you for making this video. This is exactly the information I was looking for. Everything in the video is helpful, and factual except for one thing, (not your fault) more on that later. My take away from this video are; - 1.) It all comes down to application (both have pros & cons). - 2.) The difference in battery technology, and construction. Lithium Iron Phosphate (good in low & high temperatures). Lithium Ion (poor performance in cold temps & dangerous in high temps). - 3.) Not all mAh capacity ratings are created equal. 5 Volt USB mAh rating is approximately 3 times less than 12.6 Volt mAh ratings. (1,000 mAh @ 5 Volts, is equal to 300mAh @ 12.6 Volts). - At 4:50 you say USB Power Banks can not be charged, and power a separate device simultaneously. Back in July 2018 when this video was filmed that may have been true. However, today I have a few USB Power Banks that I use to power devices, and charge simultaneously. Example; When camping I charge my cell phone with my power bank, while it’s being charged from a solar panel, (I can’t connect my cell phone directly to the solar panel). -Chuck

Watching this video at 2021, but most of this was true even at 2018. 1.many of the power banks can infact charge while also operating (charging) a phone (or dashcam). People use it as backup for home cameras. 2.most of the power banks can fully charge in less than one hour. I own a 10000 mah power bank which fully charged In less than 40 minuter (and yes, can at same time transfer charge to connected device). I also have a jump starter (136000 mah) which can be used to charge phones etc, also charges in one hour. 3.perhaps weather is a factor, but not for everyone. You could use it safely just like you use a phone inside the car.

Great review! However, there are more Jump starters that have pass-through and they can charge while powering dash cams. Also, li-on batteries today are not so easy to catch fire or even explode and can withstand temperatures of 80/90°C which a car's inside temperature can reach in an hour on a summer day with outside temperature of 35/40°C. To be extra sure, place it inside a lipo safebag. The only issue is the running ability of the battery on such an hot environment. Typical Li-ion is usually rated to work up to 60°C. On the other hand, i saw that BV B-124 also has the similar operating limits (it is a Li-ion battery but with different cathode material )

Instead of buying this battery backup being advertised at 6000mah which is 6ah and will last up to 20 hrs with both camers active in parking mode. Put a battery isolator in your car, buy an extra and separate car battery and hook the blackvue camera system to the battery on the isolator... say a 90ah battery. Using this, with blackvues battery at $300ish gets 20 hours in parking mode. Using a battery isolator with a 90ah battery... 300 hours in park mode... at half the cost. 🤫

I noticed that since B-124 was starting to sell, didn't see much of the Neo in the market. Charging wise they're great and for the longest time, I had the Neo connected through the self connect (Cig Lghtr socket) but I found a video on my particular car and finally hardwired it, what a difference. I like how the expansion packs are sold too and compatible with the B124 but they're just as expensive as the main battery pack, lol. I couldn't get it now but maybe in future as I start getting more devices connected. Thanks again for your stuff.

Great video! Some things to note. A few battery banks today have what is called “pass through” in which you can charge the battery and power a device at the same time. My setup is using a cigarette lighter to charge my lithium ion polymer battery. My dual channel anker dash cam Is then plugged into a switch which is then plugged into the USB port on the battery bank. I get about 20 hours of recording on regular mode when the car is off. I may only use this setup in colder months as I’m still afraid of exposing the battery to temps in excess of 140F

Stavros Kontzias, thinking on using something similar. The heat issue I think is overrated. Ii-Ion batteries today are reasonably safe and can withstand 80/90° C (not sure however if they will keep working in such extreme temperatures or will shutdown to cool off after hitting 70°C). I am even considering placing the power bank/jump starter inside a lipo safebag just to give an additional level of security.

My dashcams that i had brought and installed in the rental failed to turn on when the car was struck. So, now I'm heading back to Europe this fall and wanted to have an option that would keep the dashcams on when the car is parked, both at night and during the day during excursions. I don't think flying with that big Blackvue is an option? So, if it's not going to be hot, since I'll be visiting in the fall, will one of those Anker portable battery banks suffice for nighttime and day excursions usage? The reality is most dash cams can continuously record for the durations people typically need them to without significantly draining the vehicle battery-say 10 hours or less. Even better would be dash cams that reduce their frame rate until they detect motion and then shoot at a normal frame rate for the duration of the incident. You can get outdoor security cameras and video door bells that are battery powered with some running 24x7 for a year between charges with only about a 20 watt hour battery. Dash cam makers need to do better. You should be able to leave your dash cam running for 2 weeks while say parked at the airport without significant drain on your vehicle’s battery and still capture people and vehicles moving nearby. A healthy car battery can supply over 500 watt hours and still start the vehicle.

Thank you for your video and explanation of dashcam battery solutions. I bought a VIOFO 139 camera from your recommendations and review, thank you, but the settings. :) I have become very confused with the 'parking' features and settings, I thought it used sensors and would use a battery within the dashcam activated on motion. But now wondering if it has that built-in at all and I've needed a dashcam battery all along. This is going to sound stupid, I am confused. You can buy a cable direct to your battery, but thinking this is going to discharge your car battery you may not be able to start your car 'hence dashcam battery', so why sell direct cables to batteries? I watched a different video on setting up a dashcam battery and instead of going to the battery, it was connected to a 12v feed in the fusebox, so I'm not running my cable to my boot. Arrrgh. I decided I wanted an alternate battery source anyway, but then I'm now wondering about all of the 'parked' recording settings. I may have missed one of your videos on the dashcam parking settings, but what is the effect on the battery/ dashcam battery? Now I'm thinking a dashcam solution is good for me, as my commute is an hour each way, so that will charge up to full. My wife's commute is only 10 minutes but would be on all day in a public car park, I'd need a secondary charging solution for the dashcam battery. Our dashcams became more expensive all of a sudden.

To put it in simple terms, without hardwiring say I connected my car to an external lithium iron phosphate power battery (via cigarette lighter output/input), and that battery is then connected to a dash cam, say, VIOFO A119 Mini 2. How will the dashcam know when to switch from continuous recording mode to parking mode? Will I need to manually switch the mode on the dashcam whenever I park and get out? If this causes no issue, I'd love to give this method a try without hardwiring it. I assume the battery will charge while driving, but as soon as the car is parked and the car's turned off, the battery will be charging the dashcam until I return and turn my car back on. Do all Lithium Iron Phosphate battery charge only using the alternator when connected to a car?

I have a life po4 battery pack from old solar generator. The electrical boards didn’t work. I took out the battery pack,add charge controller. From the charge controller,I connected 80w solar panel and cigarette lighter plug. I use the cigarette lighter plug for my dash cam. In our boat , BUT I don’t like going through hours of footage. My dash cam say it needs hard wire kit so parking mode will work. I don’t want to use the boats fuse panel. HOW can I make it work?

I had a dash cam with super capacitors, complete trash from the beginning, couldn't even hold a charge long enough for the dash cam to shut off, shutting off audio phrase would always cutoff part way through, didn't even last 2 months, also managed to kill my car battery (that is bigger than original size for saturn vue) over 2 days. I have a new one with an actual battery that works properly no problem what so ever, even works when unplugged, I've only had it about a week, so we'll see how long it last. (Mexico, NY) Edit 9/13/22 second dashcam lasted about a year and a half(charging circuit just fried, tried different battery) got a third (similar design as second) third has lasted since then with no problems.

The purpose of the capacitor is so that the camera will keep running at extreme temps, I had two lithium battery Dashcams that couldn't run when temps went below -5C. Capacitor versions will keep going when it's super cold and I would imagine when it's hot also. Now I need a external battery to keep it running.

If all someone is interested in is park mode overnight, and not intending to use the dash cam during the day, wouldn't the portable USB battery pack work just fine?
@VortexRadar
@VortexRadar 4 жыл бұрын
It would do the job, yeah. Something to keep in mind though is that results may vary depending on which dashcam you use and how it's wired. Some may not switch into parking mode properly if running off a battery pack, so you'll want to be careful with that.

Ahh, great little video explaining the distinctions - I had not realized there were any! (why don't dashcams use the LIP batteries, then, rather than LIon or Capacitors?) Having something like that little battery cell looking one would be nice if you got into an incident and wanted to just snatch the dash-cam out, plug into the portable, and use it for filming - while you're on the phone with 911 and not using it to record.

Are you sure the li iron phosphate batteries are charging the dashcam while being charged as well and are not just using a relais to link the 12V of the car directly to the dashcam? Cause that would make more sense and would be more efficient.

Hey Vortex Radar, not sure if you’ll read this, but I hope you do another comparison of 12v battery banks vs the dedicated dash cam ones. All the ones you’ve shown are 5v batteries for phones. They sell 12v 6000mah battery banks (similar to the dash cam one shown) and it will charge with a 12v input (so you can use a car cigarette lighter with adapter) and you can charge and discharge at the same time. These are around $40 and have a battery management controller. I haven’t gotten my hands on the dash cam batteries but from the spec sheets they basically look like these but rebranded and much more expensive.

The B112 Ultra Battery Pack Takes 40 Minutes To Fully Charge Only When Hard Wired To The Car....And 80 Minutes To Fully Recharge When Connected To Cigarette Lighter Socket...Overall Good Demo....The Blackvue Power Magic Pro ,Which Has To Be Hard Wired Is A Much Cheaper Option But Has Been Known To Not Be 100% Reliable....Maybe Due To Incorrect Connectivity.....No Worries With The Battery Pack.....Peace Of Mind And 100% Trustworthy...Especially In Parking Mode.

Thanks for this video, it is something I have wanted to stress to people for awhile. Using the cellink neo and power magic ultra this year I can't stress less how important it is that i can drive 10-15 minutes to work and have enough charge to record all day. with lithium ion batteries you're gonna quickly end up with a dead battery and it'll be impossible to drive enough on a daily commute to keep it charged. With the cellink battery b i would always shut off my thinkware cam off at home to save battery, but with these new ones I don't ever worry and let them run all the time and still charges quick enough. fantastic batteries.

Appreciate the info. Will you be testing the iroad which is on preorder from blackboxmycar? I live in the desert where upwards of 90 degrees is common and I've considered the iroad for its heat resiliency. I'm wondering if it's a better idea for my situation than the blackvue 900 or even 750.

I have no plans to test it. They asked me to when it first came out, but it doesn't look like it has anything super appealing and I wanna test out cameras that have something unique that we haven't seen before. It's really similar to the F800 Pro and DR750S type cameras. Maybe once I finish everything else that's a higher priority then I could take a look at it, but I have no plans to at this point.

Hi I really like your videos and I need your help/input. I have the blackvue b-124 and it powers my dr750-2ch. I went on a 1 week vacation and when I came back my car battery was dead. I thought when the car was turned off the b-124 will power my dashcam and once the b-124 is drained it will not get power from my car. Is that make sense? I have 2019 mazda 3 and it was plugged in the cigarette port. Thanks in advance!

@VortexRadar
@VortexRadar 3 жыл бұрын
The DR900X has a number of improvements over the DR900S discussed here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2aWXpJpfr13bsk I suppose you could technically use just about any dashcam with a battery, provided you use the proper cabling. Different dashcams have different types of parking mode recording though which is way beyond the scope of this video.

@@VortexRadar 1S1P refers to the configuration of the batteries inside For instance the Cellink Neo is 6,000mAh and is 12v output This means it is most likely wired up as a 4S2P set up. 4x3.6v to give the voltage and each cell is also wired up in parallel to give the capacity 4 cells are in series 2 parallel. Looking up 4S2P in google images can explain it.
@VortexRadar

Oh S and P as in series and parallel. Gotcha. What’s the relevance or significance of batteries run in different configurations like that?
@IIGrayfoxII
@IIGrayfoxII 5 жыл бұрын
@@VortexRadar Capacity or Voltage or Both. Phone/Tablet Powerbanks dont need to have more than 5v, so they go for capacity. So 2mAh to 20Ah but voltage remains the same. Dashcam Powerbanks need 12v so you need 3 or 4 wired in series and then you can wire them up in parallel for added capacity. Power tool batteries like those 3Ah Li-Ion batteries in drills are wired up in Series to get the 18v

New Li-ion battery packs today don't stay on. They turn off randomly for no apparent reason... maybe it's a thermal shutoff. In the past year I've bought and returned a half dozen in this range (25Ah) from different brands and they all do the same thing. Won't charge any of our phones fully without shutting off. The 12V system is the obvious choice for this purpose.
